I love my mumma. I was reminded of this as I was just tidying up and moved the beautiful fabric lined box I have within which is housed a vast array of greeting cards, postcards and notelet cards. Print design ones, artistic ones, funny comic ones, ones that signify a purchase at a specific art gallery or museum etc. This is my box of cards that allows me to handwrite someone a message and pop in the post or to be ready at any moment to commemorate a birthday or achievement or send condolences etc. I’ve had this box as it’s something my mumma always does, she had her own version, and the admiration I had for her ability to have something at the drop of a hat to gift to someone with her words of wisdom and love, I simple adore. I love my mumma and her lovely peculiarities.
What things do you do because a mother or father or other significant person did, and you’ve carried the tradition on? |

I try to force feed people when they visit. Even if someone's just popping in for a cuppa I have to make sure my house is tidy and I've got nice biscuits in. |

Oh that’s a good one. My mumma always had a homebaked something something on offer. I’m not holding up my end on that one though. |

Our strongest memories of our grandparents, who we were very close to, are being picked up from school and getting a little treat from the glovebox.. and Saturday mornings when my grandad would drive over at 20mph wearing his flat cap and his grumpy face to hand deliver pocket money to all the grandkids. These are treasured memories of our childhood and my dad now does exactly the same for my nieces and nephews. It's lovely to know that we will share similar memories with the next generation.

I sit in a bus seat in the same way as my mum used to, hands crossed in my lap at the wrists. We often used to notice we were both doing it and laugh.
Been travelling this week with my daughter, and it tickled me to see she now does it too.
That would have amused nanny |

My mumma and I have this little humming habit when we’re concentrating that we both do. We were both oblivious to it until others pointed it out! |

This is a really heartwarming thread.
My grandmother, my mum and myself are all very much so I think I've learned my peculiarities from both. We all do the sitting at the table to eat, box of cards, overfeeding.
My grandma always takes around something when visiting someone. Whether that's a small bottle of their favourite tipple or a book they mentioned or homebaked goodies etc. She has a really good memory for preferences and is always listening out for things. I do the same. |

"How I put my groceries up for scanning. There's a system.
Ooooh now I want to know the system! I might be doing it all wrong...! Yes "
Oh, just in order of most to least crushable. Like potatoes first, eggs last, cold together. |

It's probably more specific than that, but that's the way I can easily explain it lol.
And it goes on the belt in that order to facilitate packing. |

Heaven forbid the cashier scans them in the wrong order too, sometimes they hand you something from the wrong bit and ruin the system |

Grandmother would always give whichever 3 sisters weren't having a birthday a little something too, always in a pretty paper bag folded over at the top. My mum now does it for her grandchildren too, and me far too excitable to wait for grandchildren, do it for whichever child isnt the Birthday girl. Something quite lovely about what could be inside a small pretty paper bag. |
