Thanks both. This isn't either of us. Professional help has been sought and it's a question of waiting for either the pain to become intolerable or the stone/s to pass on their own. I just wondered if there was a time scale |

I (hev) looked into this recently. Sometimes patients are given medication to help dissolve them, thus breaking them up into smaller pieces easier to pass. It's recommended to avoid salty foods to prevent them getting worse. Though they are also caused by calcium. Really big ones causing bad pain that don't break up may require further treatment, which is usually keyhole surgery x |

Omg I had this last summer. I've never felt pain like it.
Fortunately the stones we're small and passed through naturally (not that I noticed), but was an agonising 48 hours.
Was told by medical staff (female I might add!), at the hospital, that the pain is officially worse than childbirth |

in the past 20 years I have had about 14 kidney stones (Aint I the lucky one).
The 1st needed to be operated on but since then, when I get them I drink gallons and I mean GALLONS of water and tend to go to the A and E for a strong pain killer. of which I tend to pee out the next day |

I had kidney stones last year. it was horrific, never known pain like it. I think I got off lightly as I passed them within 12 hours without going to hospital but did get muscle relaxers and strong painkillers from GP. Hope they pass than soon. |

"How long does this condition take to resolve? Is medical intervention always required.
"
Medical intervention is not always required, other than being given a dose of morphine in hospital, or sent home with a prescription of Tramadol. Passing stones is bloody painful (according to a nurse who was treating me, she has suffered kidney stones and given birth, and reckons kidney stones are more painful. |

OK, thank you. My friend said child birth was preferable |

Many years ago I had them so bad I cried like you wouldn't believe, I had the pain last for upto 9 hrs nothing worked, even morphine.
I begged for a scan that is how I found out. Because I had been told for 10years it was in my head.
I was told i needed a op, i had to decline for personal reasons. But I suddenly started losing weight i was double what I am now. And for no reason it stopped and I've never had the pain again.
When no one is hearing you don't give up, keep at the Dr's. So many ignored me. All it takes is a scan to find out. |

I've had them.. I had three and fortunately I managed to shoot them all out before any operation although they were exceptionally painfull. Two were pea shaped but the third was like a jagged piece of glass. |

The person has been diagnosed so it's a case of finding out the next step.
Thank goodness you got sorted |

Daughter has just come out of hospital after 3 operations to try to sort it out. The first two didn't work, the third was an emergency nephrostomy to relieve the pressure and backing up of urine into the kidney. 14 days of Hell. She now has to wear a urine collecting bag on her leg. At 21.
They can be small and pass easy....but sometimes they don't. They can be very serious.
Don't delay, get them scanned at A and E. And remember SEPSIS.
Sorry for doom and gloom but we've been in a bad place recently |

Generally, kidney/urereric stones won't resolve by themselves. You may pass the stone, usually with discomfort to excruciating pain.the best ways to deal with stones is extracorporial lithotripsy, or Holmium laser with is performed under general anaesthesia.to know which is best for a consultation with a Urologist will be required |

Smaller than 5 mm - passing out in urine , drink plenty of fluids and painkillers
5mm and bigger - lithotripsy or surgery (rare these days )
Time scale - nobody can predict passing out and the other option depends on intensity of pain and NHS basically |

I had Kidney stones 7 years ago, the pain was incredible! I passed it within 48 hours but unfortunately, it scarred the lining of my kidney and I got an infection. I can't begin to describe that pain. I was on morphine for 3 days and intravenous anti-bio tics.
All the liquid you put in your body is filtered through your kidneys. Drink lots of water, stay away from dairy and keep the diet very bland. I couldn't eat for a few days but seem to remember being fed banana's and clear soup when I could.
Keep hydrated, warm and baths are good. |
