couple, us we him her.

So we are hiring a vehicle for a up-and-coming long journey.

Usually if we hire it's only a day or so.

But this time it's longer.

But it seems that the hire companies have really gone down the Ryan air route of charging loads for extras.

I don't usually get all the bits and pieces.

But slightly concerned that you have to pay extra for breakdown cover is that not part of the hire?

Any thoughts or advice?

You can get all the extras the hire company charges for externally, so have a look into hire car insurance etc. As it could save you money.

I hire a lot so here is my experience.

The hire companies typically charge a lot for all the extras (reducing the excess, breakdown, tire cover, etc). These charges are very profitable for them and the terms and conditions are very strict. For example if you break down you cannot use your own personal breakdown cover (your breakdown company will even refuse to come out if they know it is a hire car). So you really have 3 choices

1/ Buy them from the hire company. Advantage is it is very simple and you know if anything happens there is no hassle.

2/ Buy separate specialist car hire insurance to cover these charges. It is about £50 a year. However be aware that the cost of any incident still comes out of your excess deposit you pay when you hire which is about £1000 these days. They normally charge you the whole amount at first and will then refund you the difference when they know the real cost. At that point you can claim the cost off the insurance policy.

3/ Don't bother with 1/ or 2/ and any incident will come out of the excess deposit when you hired (the £1000). They will charge you the whole amount at first and will then refund you the difference when they know the real cost.
