I've a friend who does cosplay and modeling. Posts pictures of himself over Instagram and companies are starting to give him stuff for free. His hits are growing. I suggested he move into video and now he's given it a go.

I take photos of myself all the time. I'm gobby, I want free stuff.

Anyone else thought about dipping their toes into this wierd world?

Before me and C were a couple he did YouTube for a while and was started to get views in the thousands. This was 8 years ago, before YouTube had really kicked off.

I had no idea, and he enjoyed spending time with me and neglected YouTube.

I took away our easy life!

I’d love to be one of those people who just get paid to go on holiday and review it. How fun

My son is a professional gamer, he started on Twitch, just playing games and chatting, now he makes good money from subscribers, sponsors and gaming companies wanting him to play their games and advertise on screen.

Im not one for sitting in front of a camera very comfortably. If I thought what I had to say could help others. Wouldn't that be different?

Travelling is a great idea. I'd kind of just want to do an extended version myself on here. Talk about the things I'm passionate about.. The things that rile me up.

My mate started by just posting pics on Instagram. If I toned down my fab ones a bit

As do I. It took a while for me to get used to it on here. Taking photos to stir interest. I wouldn't see what I'm saying as being 'Influencing' though. It's just a term that's been attached by marketing people.

I just vent off in a few different semi anonymous ways online already and probably always will. Why not collect it all under one banner.

My daughter has been approached a few times but as she said her life is too busy and too much fun filled for that ... when I was young I modelled but it was a job and my life was exactly hat my life!

Unfortunately life on the social media thing is just that your life, seems to me it's all a little shallow and doesn't leave space for what life should be all about!

Go with want you want to do but think very carefully especially if you have kids and a family life as it changes everything

I absolutely hate the effect they have over my youngest.

She watches them all the time. Drives me nuts.

Work hard and earn your living I believe.

Wise words.

I have kids, but not much of a life.

I'm not looking for a career. I'm not seeking fame. I'm just considering lumping my general thoughts into one place.

Yes I suppose if my boys found me on camera talking honestly and openly about stuff.. Sex, my past, my time in the forces, my outlook.. Fuck it.. You know what.. They could learn a thing or two.

If it took off and became something other than planned. It'd buy me more time and money to spend on my boys.

If it didn't, I've got an online record of my time on this rock.

Only hungover Sunday ramblings in my head for now.

The successful ones work very hard at making it pay. To brush it off like that seems unfair.

Editing, script writing, creative content, production quality.

Some my sons watch are awful, others aren't so bad. Some I even watch and laugh at with them.

The ones I dislike, I discuss with my sons. Explain why I'm not a fan of a person or a channel they like. Sometimes they see it too and veer away.

Much better for your sons to be experiencing real life though ... I know it's a generational thing but when you look at kid's health and mental health now it's a minefield

Manchester (she/her)

I've received a few free samples and a full size product in exchange for reviews. It's a thing that exists on some sites. I'm in no way an influencer.

I'd never do it as a job, and I don't do positive reviews for the sake of it.

Not brushing it off at all. But we are talking girls who flaunt make up and clothes here not people who have put much thought into it. Sorry but to me that's a very shallow existence. One I wouldn't want my daughter to perceive as normal.

I was just thinking... The one I do follow is actually a makeup review site, as it happens. But she's scrupulously honest, objective, and pulls no punches where it's warranted.

Agreed. I'm quite a sincere, level headed, honest adult with principles and morals though. No agenda to promote other than my thoughts, which I post anyway. Regardless of what others think.

Interesting point.

I guess social media is a very powerful platform in this day and age. My problem is, I think it's very one dimensional. Firing out facts, spin, emotive language and perspectives, with very little heed taken of the response sent back.

If I thought I was of value to others? Maybe...but in a format of images and media which didnt include myself, just my spoken word.

I feel I'm at my best when it comes to the response. If you look at any thread I start..i reply to most and it's usually in that space my friendships are formed on here.. Or other forums I've used.

I think I'm more comfy without a camera on me as well.. Just a case of pushing boundaries till you're comfy with it.

I find most of them very frustrating. Omg this is stunning because it suits me and I love (brand)!

But makeup is an area where they're incredibly useful if you find good ones. The official marketing is often so amazingly dishonest, and product quality is incredibly hit and miss even with the very high end luxury products. I'd be so amazingly pissed if I bought a £50+ product which performed worse than a £5 one, but generally you can't return makeup just because it's garbage. And they get away with it.

Enter honest objective influencers (not "I love this", but "this is how it applies/ how long it lasts" etc), and the game changes.

I use social media for work and it's absolutely amazing for that! But won't have it in my life at all ... prefer other people's opinions and experiences the old fashioned way - face to face, when it involves real emotion and body language.

But there again I'm just old fashioned lol and see so many people with such bad information from youtube mainly but also all the social media sites during my work day!

Selling out you mean? No.. I couldn't do that. I just think the things I tend to know a fair bit about.. History, traveling, culture, society, sex, sexuality, war, politics, being on poverty line, positive mental health, relationships.. Are the things I like to vent off steam about.

I always get a reaction, from family, friends and random strangers.

If a clothing company sent me the odd free hoody for just being myself. I'd be chuffed to bits lololol
