just been watching a peice on the box about kids with selective mutism
must be very difficult to understand as a parent i couldn't imagine what it would be like, we have 2 boys that were right chatter boxes as kids would be incredibly odd for them to of suddenly stopped taliking
i have in the past read quite a few books by Tory Haden she worked with children that were selectively mute and it always seemed to stem from a childhood trauma yet these ones on the box just now hadn't had a trauma or at leats one wasn't mentioned, i couldn't imagine what it would be like if one of my boys had just suddenly stopped talking must be uber strange
i guess though it is one of the easier childhood dramas to cope with could be much much worse |

"i just wonder why we spend years learning to walk and talk so that someone tells us to sit down and shut up"
Cos just because you can do something doesn't mean others have to love you for it.
Personally I like children to be highly active and very noisy as long as they are perpetually travelling in the opposite direction to me. |

My friends son had this, when i said had it he stopped talking. He was about three and had just learnt to put sentences together and then just stopped. This was 30 years ago and he had lots of tests and couldnt find anything wrong with him. When he started school he would say the odd word and over a few years started talking again. When he was about 15 he was diagnosed as being autistic. Not sure if there is a connection between autism and this(havent seen the interview) or whether it was just a coincidence in his case |

"Selective mutism can be a form of control. Not always. Over anxious parents worry and the child learns to use it for the constant attention. Makes them the hub or the focus."
ooo intersting angle i can see how that would work for sure |
