They may be working their way through a long list, intend to return later or to block delete later.
In any case, the answer is... because they do.
Ignore and don't let it bother you. If you get a response start from there.

I cleared a lot out today that have been there for weeks. Pure laziness on my part!

If they don’t reply assume they aren’t interested and move on. If it is part of ongoing communication I assume better things to do than listen to my waffle. If it happens continually I stop bothering them. |

I'm lazy that's why. I delete nothing and read very little. My profile my way of doing things... oh and I chuckle to myself that it annoys/ confuses some people  |

I work away from home. We both access our account and will keep messages until we’re both at home to discuss them.
People run their profiles the way that works best for them OP.

On my laptop I can tick multiple messages and delete them all, while still keeping the ones I want.
On my phone I can only delete 1 at once and it takes ages to refresh the screen so I don't bother sorting my inbox out.  |

I have a lot of messages so if I’m not feeling like reading answering they could be there for weeks. Someone might get surprise return message after few weeks of sitting in my inbox  Just to be dare I have few friend messages on facebook or what’sapp i answered for few days and that’s just how we roll. |

I don't delete read messages, why should I?
It's also helps me if they resend the same message week after week and I just have a list of them.
The faq says that a no reply is no thank you, and that is also in my profile, so I feel no need to have to take action in some way on every message received. |
