**warning this is about periods. Men look away now**
I've never had any issues with my period. Mostly I'm regular and apart from achy boobs and a bit of cramping they're pretty straightforward.
Recently though my mood swings have been ridiculous! I was really happy earlier, I just fell asleep in front of the TV and woke up incredibly sad and crying! For no reason! I wasn't even thinking about anything!
Please tell me I'm not going mad?
Have your periods and side effects changed over time? I'm finding this new one hard to deal with! |

Mine just changed after having kids. Maybe if your on the pill, you might need to change to a different one, the hormones in the pill might not suit anymore... Hope you get sorted soon tho x |

I don't think you are going mad. Hormones can do some pretty fucky things to you, it sucks but normal. |

Mine were horrendous in every way during my teens (insanely heavy, more insanely irregular, painful, mood swings) and I got no treatment other than "it'll get better when you're older". As if my teens weren't bad enough
I have no idea how I coped before I hit the age where I was deemed old enough to be on the pill, but it was a long slog, where I felt very much alone and even blamed for something spectacularly out of my control.
The pill brought it down to a dull roar (still problematic, but nowhere near as much) and the Mirena is even better. |

Mine were horrendous when I was younger.
I was so heavy, leaving the house was impossible. I'd have to shower every hour!
As for moods.
My eldest soon would stay at a friend's house for a few nights.
I really was scary psycho mum!
I had the coil fitted about 12yrs ago.
Bingo!
Periods practically stopped. Mood swings stopped.
Other side effects, bloating, cramps, greasy hair all stopped too.
I occasionally get the odd period now & then but totaly manageable.
I got one this week.
Totaly unprepared, trying to shuffle round Asda with kitchen roll wedged in my knickers, cursing at slow people in front of me at the checkout.
Not cool |

I used to feel homicidal when my friends would bitch that their periods were between 26 and 30 days apart. I would have killed for that.
They're wildly irregular again now, but usually extremely light and pain free. I'm good with that. |

I find I go through phases.. Over the last 3-6 months emotionally I'm much worse... I'm so moody and feel really angry but then end up in floods of tears over the smallest thing.
Your not been silly it affects us all in different ways, it maybe makes it worse that your only experiencing these symptoms now.
There a re vitamin type tablets that are meant to help but with hormones I don't know if they really work but you could maybe give them a go??
Hugs xx |

I still find that there's not a great deal of sympathy for gynae problems. I've even had "having a baby will help!" Fuck. Off.
Any other issue I have this level of problems with, I get help and taken seriously from the word go. If my womb gets involved, the pain isn't real, tough shit, and I get lectures on kids while I'm at it. Are we sure it's the 21st fucking century? |

You think that’s bad? After the mood swings comes the voracious sexual appetite.
One of my fuck buddies is on the change. She’s sex mad. I can’t cope with her demands.
There’s nothing left of me now, just two pubes and a signet ring!
Seriously, as a man who has witnessed this at first hand, Mother Nature can be cruel.

One of my friends is 34 and 100% positive she doesn't want and never will want kids.
She struggles so much with her periods being heavy and pain full and the hormonal change gives her big painful cysts on her belly and groin yet no matter how much she pleads they won't refer her for a hysterectomy in case she changes her mind. |

So women get periods and need to remove significant proportions of their body hair. |

I have been known to (almost monthly) get emotionally flipped upside down.
I wonder if it has something to do with anxiety, my hormones making it worse. The problem is it normally strikes a week before I'm due on, so have no pain or symptoms to remind me I'm likely to be extra sensitive emotionally. It's like because at that moment, at that time you really are feeling those feelings, therefore they are real, but under "normal" circumstances you wouldn't react or feel the same way. It's a weird realistic trickery of sorts, but ultimately it IS real at that time.
I don't take the pill or anything as I've found most turn me into an absolute rage ball, literally like a firework that merely needs a spark to set it off.

Was reading recently and don't know why, but, certain hormone metabolites in the brain cause the mood changes - or that some women just metabolize hormones differently.
Salt intake can be a large factor, it stated limiting salt will reduce bloating - including water retention in the brain. That, in turn, may ease both physical and emotional symptoms.
I know cutting out sugar and caffeine seemed to help as both make PMS symptoms worse.

Since I’ve started the peri menopause I’ve definitely suffered more. I’ve found Evening Primrose oil helps with achy boobs.
I just accept for 4 days before by period is due I’ll be rather fragile. So I’m kind to myself during that time.
The only positive is I’m always mega horny too pre period. |

Yep! Normally after I've had a tearful anxious episode too, and I feel like a right twat.
Maybe I'm not as still broken from the PTSD as I thought I may have been, and maybe it's hormonal for the most part?
Maybe it's a combo of both?
I think it's a combo of both actually, just made that extra bit worse when hormonal.
I'm waffling out of confusion

It's like because at that moment, at that time you really are feeling those feelings, therefore they are real, but under "normal" circumstances you wouldn't react or feel the same way. It's a weird realistic trickery of sorts, but ultimately it IS real at that time.
I don't take the pill or anything as I've found most turn me into an absolute rage ball, literally like a firework that merely needs a spark to set it off.
P
That kinda makes sense to me. I probably hide a lot emotionally so it's like my body has taken over and is forcing it out.
It just shocked me how quickly it happens! I was so cheery and now I just want to curl up into a ball! "
Oh fuck I know that one, a loss of "control"
You know what you want to do/feel like but your body ain't having a bar of it and decides it's gonna force you to do what it wants not the other way round.

I'm a complete lunatic a few days before my period.
I've had to take a half day today because I'm so mental - I sobbed earlier about things I won't share here
I have to go to work in a bit - I'm not sure it's a good idea |

I’m like you OP, normally sail through my monthly, no pain just the annoyance of its timing.
However these last couple of years I have noticed a lot that I am sad a lot just prior and early days, cry a lot for no apparent reason. I’ve got used to it and shut myself away x |

I've had the Mirena coil fitted yesterday. Had it removed last year so I could be a surrogate mother for my friends who can't have kids.
All in all I've had that coil on and off for about 16 years now. Never any issues. Eventually your period stops. I have no cramping or other side effects. Never have! I would definitely recommend it to you OP or any other lady. |

I had the mirena coil for ten years and I never had a period or anything, was fucking fantastic! I meant to have it changed this time last year but with moving etc I haven’t got round to it yet, but the last few months I’ve been getting very light periods and my mood swings are bloody awful, I feel sorry for Doughnut because he is seeing a side of me he has never seen before x |

I don't take breaks from the pill for two or three months and this helps my pre menstrual symptoms. I used to not have breaks for months and checked with doctor and he said it was safer for health reasons to have a break every three months |

OP, has your diet changed? Your period does change over time but look at ensuring you have enough magnesium in your diet. And, go and speak to your GP and get some help.

I used to get the absolute pits of depression and despair the week before my period every bloody month. It was truly horrendous. Vitamin B6 was a game changer when I was told about it end of last year. Hasn’t happened since. 100mg a day at first. Now I take 50mg B6 and a Vit B complex as well. |

I've always suffered with mood swings my PMS makes me pretty unbearable it could just be a one of or a slight hormone imbalance this month if it continues evening primrose is supposed to help as well as magnisium xx

You might be adjusting, and there might have been something in the processed food that did help manage some of the symptoms. You need to find the natural, unprocessed equivalent... once you've worked out what it is.
Meanwhile, see the Jaffa Cakes info above.
One partner used to describe my mood shift as getting a tonne of ready mixed concrete dropped on him. Sex used to help.

My periods and mood swings were always horrendous, it got to the point that I was so angry/emotional that my daughter said she hated coming home from school, that was a turning point for me and I told my doctor enough is enough. I was bleeding most of the time and had to take 10 tablets a day just to stop it temporarily.
Luckily I got sent to an amazing gynaecologist who agreed to give me a hysterectomy and honestly, I've never felt better!
It's absolutely shite when you feel like that for no reason and you have my sympathy |

Me? I've tried everything recommended by conventional medicine and alternative, nothing made a difference. I eat well, don't drink or smoke and am active. I've just learned to ride it out, knowing that the suicidal and murderous feelings will pass as soon as my period starts. |

This happened to me and I went on the mini pill. I don’t get them at all now. It’s heaven compared to what it was! I couldn’t even leave the house for 2 days a month. |

that's horrible.
Big hugs I hope you're OK x"
Thanks, I'm sure I'll be fine. To be honest I don't really know why 111 told me to go in as they can't do blood tests or order scans or anything. I'll just get that sorted at my gp in the week. |

It doesn't normally happen, this is quite unusual. My step-mum had fibroids and had similar symptoms so I could be something like that. |

"**warning this is about periods.
It might well be part of a woman’s period to have her hormones unwittingly upset and that might affect your mood. It might be perfectly normal for all I know; just an educated ( ? ) guess. |

Before I was sterilised I tried the mirena. It gave me terrible mood swings and the hairiest legs! Not a side effect I was anticiping |

I’ve not long had a total hysterectomy. I had long, heavy, really painful periods. I had cramps for a week before & the whole week of & also a twitch when ovulating. I had endometriosis, adenomyosis & fibroids. I also had PMDD (Premenstrual dysphoric disorder). I was an absolute joy to be around
