I heard on the news this morning that a well know supermarket is working with “social influencers” to raise awareness and reduction of food waste.

WTF is a social influencer? #notacceptableinthe80s

It’s people who influence people through social media

"It’s people who influence people through social media "

Yeah I got that, but what I don’t understand is how people actually make a career out of this?

Manchester (she/her)

It's a marketing job. Just because social media didn't exist back before a good chunk of adults were born, doesn't make it a fake job.

You get some minor a-list sleb from a reality TV show, and stick them in front of a camera

Yep. The revenue social media influencers can bring by product placement/affiliated links etc can be quite impressive over a period of time. People buy into and want to emulate particular lifestyles they see others as having - now it's far more open with disclosure required about sponsorship and financial gains from mentions but it's been going on for donkey years.

In some instances I'm really not a fan of the practice, but it's another form of advertising, is all. (disclosure helps)

It doesn't have to be on social media....if someone commands your ear they are a social influencer...think David Attenborough for example.

Just around the corner

If someone will pay you to do it, it’s not a “fake job”.

The same way professional gaming exists and streaming.

Look up Mr Beast on YouTube, guy gets hundreds of thousands of sponsorship money just to name the sponsor.

Apexlegends paid all the big twitch streamers to play their game on day of release.

Instagram model can advertise a lipstick or a range of products and since she has 5+ million followers, even if a small % buy the product she recommends that could make a huge profit for the company.

Hitchin

My previous company employed someone on the back of a couple of highly successful Facebook groups she set up.

This was in the field of education and not at all frivolous - she was definitely an influencer given the respect she'd earned within the groups.

Like so many things, the interest comes when you dig beneath the surface.

York

To be honest they increasingly annoy me, there's so many of them on Instagram, usually very good looking girls in their early to late 20's, posting hundreds pictures of themselves living this perfect dream life of being constantly on holiday or in the gym, which they mostly get by leeching and freeloading from brands and hotels.

I've seen them when I've been on holiday at the kind of places they go, posing for the perfect photo whilst their sappy boyfriend runs around in the background carrying their bags and trying to take these dream life photos from different angles which she then isn't happy with and makes him take a load more.

They just epitomise the self obsessed generation Z in my opinion.

I think it's all bollocks. Better than stacking shelves though. If I was young and hot, I'd do it.

Instagrammers and Youtuber have a lot of influence over children and teenagers. I'm not sure about adults though. Maybe Tweeters cover that part of social media.
