Never use it in an actual conversation but use it online on the end of a sentence in which I’m generally taking the piss.
A quick read online and the actual origins are stated in the 70s/80s of British Asian/punjabi using isn’t it on the end of a sentence which over time developed into “innit” by British Asian teens.
How true that is I’m not sure. |

In all seriousness.
I think it's something that crept in from Asian men.
I grew up near Southall and lots of the older then younger Indian guys always seemed to use it in a sentence but generally ended a sentence with "init"
I think it gradually spread into youth culture and general.
Obviously this is just an observation that I made but I definitely noticed it in the mid 80's lots of my mate's dad's and older brothers would use it.

"We say it in the West Country actually. Not sure when that started but it’s not the same way as they say it on the street.
YARP!"
I’ve no idea what that means. |

Here in Leicester, its associated with the Asian community, to the extent that I've heard some people refer to Asian people collectively as "The Innits" |

I think on here it's used as more of a dismissive term. Like "I've given my opinion and that's it" especially if they've said something a bit airy fairy or preachy. |

You only need to see where Sacha baron Cohen got his inspiration for AliG to understand the origins of word's like Init.
Like I said previously it was middle class Asian guys saying it,then picked up by middle class Asian kid's trying to be"Street"
Ultimately it bled into urban speak.
And picked up by chavvy youth culture and has been assimilate into text speak.
My cousin and I always used to take the piss out of people using it to try and make themselves sound more urban.
Like I said
"Oh my god in'it"
It's an agreement with someone, it's a statement of yes it is isn't it it's also complete bollocks. |

Probably the the same people who answer every question with "So".
What's your favourite music?
So I like Reggae.
What's your favourite food?
So I like curries.
Which country would you like to visit?
So I would like to go to the Himalayas and get a life innit ![](/icons/s/razz.gif) |
