I sometimes struggle to get my head round the cloud of darkness that shadows us, nuclear weapons. Yet if you look at history during their short existence in the world there has already been so many accidents, misunderstandings and near misses. I do wonder if it's just a matter of time untill someone makes an irreversible mistake? Given the history of near misses what are our chances of avoiding destruction over the next 100 years?

A natural disaster is actually more likely and a major extinction level event happens every so often... believe the last one actually wiped our most of the European cavemen... and that was because of the super volcano in Italy ( which is currently showing alot of activity) but I don't worry about what I have no control over

Well that don't cheer things up any. Your right there has been a fair few regional and global extinctions in the planet's history. Likewise I don't worry about it, but I do find the concept of how much energy in such a short period of time could be released fascinating. Also I get the people who want to ban the bomb, to remove it would reduce a significant risk factor to our future survival. But personally (like most) I suffer from great apathy on this point because the task seems so impossible and I am far more distracted other things in this world. Also I understand the security it offers poviding no one fucks it up. But I am intrested in the odds of this happening in the next 100 years. I would say more likely than we'd like to think.

I guess the main thing is the enjoy life best you can. Its almost inconcivable that we came to exist in the first place and like all good parties it has to end at some point. Or existance is a gift not to squander. So Love, fuck and enjoy the party because you never know when last orders will be called.

Originally they thought a single atom bomb would set off an unstoppable chain reaction that would burn the entire world, when that didn't happen they tested hundreds of the things all over the world and we're still here. They're a nasty weapon and I hope they are never used in anger again, but the genie is out of the bottle now and having them at least means others won't try to use theirs against us.

"I think the nuclear threat is less than in the sixties"

It's still as present, just slightly different.

In the 60s there was massive overkill on both sides due to the belief that some of ours will be taken out by them and vice versa.

Now we still have an over capacity but it is more targeted. However we also have far more players at the nuclear table..

Removing the bombs is going to be a hard task, loads of countries have it, smaller countries might be reluctant to give it up as they would feel the need to protect their country.

18/1 Ladbrokes

Paddy Power are offering a double with odds of 33/1 of that happening combined with the dinosaurs coming back.

Realistically... the human race is much better equipped to deal with any event which in the past would have decimated the population. The things that can be achieved through modern science and engineering is extraordinary and will protect us in 99% of cases... the other 1% will be down to Bruce Willis to save us.

I remember mum talking about a acidental false alarm that happen to her and dad in early 80s (I think just before i was born) in the early hours of the morning. She said they just stayed in bed. They lived less than a mile from an airfield so didnt see much point doing anything else.

In many ways we are worse equipped.

We are totally reliant on electricity for technology and on fossil fuels for transport.

We have no mechanisms to grow and store food for all without either.

Imagine any city where suddenly there is no power for a week.

I think you’re looking in the wrong places for disasters.

Someone said the other day that they didn’t seem to get as many bugs hitting their windscreen these days. They thought that great.

Yet, when the pollinators go, we will surely follow not far behind.

Any existence is a moment in the vastness of time. History shows that for many life and death were separated by mere seconds or less. Mankind is a good client of The Grim Reaper, forever seeking new and ingenious ways of killing itself. However why worry? Statistically most of us will get through the day without event. So watch Good Morning, have a cuppa and remember that Heaven won't be all that bad now Freddie Starr is up there too.

True, but without getting all conspiracy theory bat crazy sounding; those who hold power will never relinquish it and how they grasp onto it.

Powerful energy companies and conglomerates are in bed with governments and sadly most environmental initiatives are seen as a way for many to make money not actually achieve! Boy my Friday is starting glum...I actually find it sad.

On a positive note all out nuclear war will re wild the planet.

Chernobyl has become a refuge for wildlife. Its because we aren't there that it has a greater biodiversity than anywhere near.

Nuclear war would be a blessing for the natural world.

I disagree, even a schoolboy engineer or chemist can produce electricity in a whole variety of ways, and all of the old fashioned things we used to use (steam, gravity, water etc...) will still work... plus, in the event of a nuclear incident, we'll be able to utilise the free radioactive fuel sources all around us

I don't worry about what I can't control. I fly twice a week, each time i get on the plane i think this could be the last time i do this. Has the pilot had enough rest...? did that maintenance job get finished properly...? Each taxi i get i think about the moment the guy taps his device to accept his next fare and in do so drives head on into the 18 wheeler coming the opposite way... Similarly when you hear that some mad dictator or some sham president starts cock posturing I think that there are more important things to worry about in my life. I just make sure my loved ones know they're loved.
