Moving house and redirecting mail is it worth it?
Jump to: Newest in thread
We’ve just moved in with an elderly sick relative, for obvious reasons this could be a short term thing. He’s in rented accommodation so when the time comes we will move back to our house.
At the moment we have a family member living in ours so collecting mail will be easy, our question is. is it worth redirecting mail, bearing in mind most of its done online these days, it’s only really online shopping & Xmas cards which can be sorted easily, the rest of its junk mail?
Has anybody had mail redirected & is it a reliable service, that offers value for money, also presumably we need to legally inform banks, Dvla etc of our new address albeit a temporary one?
Anybody with experience of this care to give us their opinion?
Thanks in advance.

Hi
Redirecting mail is the only way to ensure your mail is safe, the service is very reliable, but you must include all the Christian and Surnames of the people who’s mail is to be redirected.
Also any business names that you may be involved with.
As far as I can recall you can pay for 3 6 or 12 months, with the right to cancel at any point
Hope this helps ![](/icons/thumb_up.png) |

When I moved in with hubby I could I’ve got the service for free, one of the perks of him being a postie. I didn’t bother, just let everyone know my new address.
Maybe I should have taken advantage of it though, then the dvla might not have lost my driving licence and marriage certificate by sending them to my old address when I updated them that I had got married and moved house! |

I had my mail redirected for 3 months when I moved house. Don't think it cost that much.
If you are leaving your house empty for any length of time your home insurance may be invalid, check your policy.
Also if your elderly relative is infirm but still with if, it may be worth applying for power of attorney now while they can still agree to it.
Age UK have good advice. |

I have lived in this flat for 5 ½ years, and still get mail addressed to previous occupants, I've given up putting "No longer at this address" on them and putting them back in the post box, they just go straight in the bin now ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

We always have our mail redirected for a year after we move. It's very reliable and means you don't miss anything important. As soon as anything arrived that we forgot to advise a change of address for we contacted the sender. I'd always do it, it's amazing what you can forget about |

This will be a whole shit storm of trouble for when I move.
I won't be homeless, as I'm going to be living on my barge, but I won't have a fixed address.
I have my business address, but I won't have access to the doctors, in the local area as I'll be classed as a traveller, even though it's against the law. Hey ho! |

Theres a service called keepsafe where your mail is kept in your sorting office and you can collect it. Not sure how much it is.
Redirection is an option but not sure if it's used for temporary mail redirection as the postie will think you've moved and potentially after the redirection finishes could "do you a favor" and keep redirecting the mail even though you don't want that any more. So double check that. Another option is to ask about a po box again in your local sorting office, dunno how you go about it or how much it costs but best thing in any case is pop there and speak to the boss, they will best direct you.
Good luck.

Hi the easiest solution is to pay at Royal Mail for a post office box, or P.O. Box number if you like, then all your mail will be delivered there. Alternatively you can have a “call and collect” service where your mail will be held at the depot until you collect it. ![](/icons/thumb_up.png) |
