Im currently in insecure work which currently has me stood down while demand is slack. I am tempted to take other work in the meantime, but my current employer doesn't like anyone to jave a second job and can use an excuse to terminate employment. If i took a second job, would my tax code change for my current job? And catch me out? |

It shouldn't change as the second job would be taxed at Basic Rate (20%) |

Maybe leave and find better paid employment if it's possible?
Personally I don't think anyone should have to be in the position where they have to take a 2nd job on, although I know that lots of people don't have a choice in that especially with scummy zero hour contract's.
It's hard to say without knowing what you do for a living or if your able to find other employment. But if your employee is a cunt about it, then maybe leave when your able too. |

This depends on your income. If you're paying tax on your first job, you won't have any "untaxable allowance" on your second job... so you will pay tax on the whole full amount you earn.

I'm constantly in and of work it's a piss take. |

They can't dismiss you for taking a second job, it's actually illegal now. How you would prove it I'm not sure.
I can't remember if it changes your tax code but you will pay a massive amount of tax on a second wage and if it's minimum wage it's not worth the effort.
Good luck op |

They won't admit it, they'll use an excuse or just never give you a shift and force you out |

No matter how many jobs/income you have you are entitled to your full tax allowance. The tax office can split it across multiple jobs or income based on what you ask them to do. It will mean you may have to "guess your income" a bit to make best use of it. |

The HMRC use real time information now, so all your tax payments will be up to date throughout the year, (less chance of overpaid tax)
You can earn £12,500 per financial year, tax free.
If #1 job only paid £10,000 , you can carry over the £2,500 to job #2.
Check your contract of employment, it may be written in there that you cannot take 2nd employment within the same industry.
But whether this will stand up in a court of law is questionable.
Have you looked into Universal Credit? You may be able to get support there until you find the right job. It’s a hassle & a half to apply for but worth a look.
Or maybe set up a part time business? Then you can be in charge of your own situation.
Good luck Op! |
