Not the usual having a go thread just wondering how many of you that cycle actually have insurance as I've just seen a cyclist come past me and loss control going in to the back of a car smashing his rear window and his tail light he's ok but now the driver has to claim off his own insurance as the cyclist in question didn't have any form of insurance no negative comments as I'm just wondering  |

I'm going to guess that the majority of 'real' cyclists do. You need it to race (comes with the licence) many clubs expect members to have it and I also expect that members have it. And for non club members many leisure cyclists and regular commuterus will because we want to have legal protection if/when we get hit by a car.
But the kid you see on an unlit bike in the middle of winter or riding a bike falling to pieces probably doesn't have any.
Also house insurance can include personal liability insurance too |

Just join one of the 2 big organisations British Cycling or cycling UK as an individual member |

There is the option to buy insurance but I'm not sure of the numbers...as in how many cyclists actually purchase insurance.
Unlike motorists, its not compulsory yet. Two of my friends commute to work via cycle and have done so for the past 10 years...neither has insurance cover.
I do remember something in the news about a proposal for registering cyclists-number plates, owners etc
Cyclists (in England) kicked up a fuss that such a move was targeting cyclists and preventing folk from cycling either commuting or on a casual basis. |

This wasn't a child and the bike in question was a expensive bike he did seem like he was a long term rider but maybe not he was in a group so I assumed he was part of a club but if you say clubs are insured then he obviously wasn't |

When I used to be a member of the bta British triathlon association now triathlon England.
We got insurance as part of the membership pretty sure it was third party insurance/public liability they also provided legal cover to help the cyclist in the event of an accident.
As also stated joining any cycling association will also provide insurance. |

I have some insurance as an addition to my house insurance which includes personal liability, bizarrely though most "proper" cyclist policies cost more than car insurance... which is just mad.

The driver can claim off the cyclist directly, just as in any other civil incident.
Driving only mandates having insurance due to the massive potential for tens, hundreds or even millions of pounds of possible damage.
Mandatory insurance is there to protect you against bankruptcy.
Cyclists, pedestrians etc don't need that protection because they simply cannot cause that level of loss - basic physics.
If you have a household insurance policy you're generally covered for Public Liability any way, mine covers me for £5 million. |

Even though the cyclist doesn’t have insurance they are still liable, the driver needs to get the details and go through their insurance - I’m a cyclist and have seen this happen.
Also, had to pay for repairs to a car my son cycled into |

The issues with adding a number plate requirement to bikes is that they have no provision in their design. Most bikes would need to be modified to carry some sort of plate, then it would obviously need to be lit too so it was visible at night which adds further complexity. The complexity would discourage people from cycling which would have the knock-on effect of increasing the number of cars on the roads with all the congestion and fumes etc that go with it.
Then you also need to think about children, do you bring in a minimum age where you're allowed to ride a bike?
And what about ID.. how do you know who's riding that bike? The complexity just keeps growing... |

The vehicle was stationery in queueing traffic on a steep hill the cyclist for some reason didn't slow whether there was a problem with his brakes I'm not sure and yes the driver could claim through a civil case but he doesn't want the hassle so he's going to go through his own insurance I have the whole thing on my dash cam |

Surely his insurance company will decide themselves whether they will pursue the cyclist for the damages? Unless the driver didn't get the cyclists details... in which case the insurance might not pay out anyway. |
