It is not unusual to experience ridicule on fab,
An area I notice is on diet and fitness threads
Lots of cake quips, and how much you bench bruuuuuu
I stumbled across this article by a trainer, Chris sugart
I disagree with his generalisation of action offends the inactive but it certainly seems to pull some strings on some people
He wrote
Action offends the inactive
You're not imagining it. When you decide to better yourself, you'll be immediately surrounded by people trying to stop you. Action, it seems, offends the inactive.
They'll usually be subtle about it. Offering you foods that work against your nutrition plan, often presented as gifts or treats. Expressing false worry about your supplement usage, your food choices, and the number of days you go to the gym. They'll find plausible reasons for you to cheat on your diet or skip a workout. They'll encourage you to be discouraged. They'll even get mad at you for how your positive choices are affecting their lives.
If anger doesn't work, they'll bribe, they'll mock, and they'll carefully plant seeds of negativity. All because you've decided to be better, to be more.
It's the story of the crabs in the bucket. Put a bunch of crabs in a bucket and some will try to crawl out and avoid becoming dinner. The rest won't try to escape, but they'll reach up and pull the others down.
When you set a new goal, physical or otherwise, you have unintentionally pointed out other people's weaknesses. Their faults and shortcomings. Their inability to plan and lack of desire to express one iota of willpower. They sit around and want. You have royally pissed them off by doing.
Piss them off anyway. Offend them anyway. Crawl out of the bucket and find new friends and better relationships.
Remember, action offends the inactive. And that's their problem, not yours. |

I dont strictly agree with his analysis, I'm sure he is correct in some cases , certainly not all , however they are motivated to act the way they do for some reason and to my mind I generally think it a negative thing to do x |

Are you sure about that? There's some banter and some shit attempts at humour and dick waving and some self deprecating comments but ridicule? Really? Those threads tend to be very sipportive |

I'd agree the whole spectrum is evident from , the genuinely just ribbing , to the not so just
But what about his point , often a person pursuing fitness can often have the comments and attitudes he highlights, I certainly experience it
I'm sure indeed it exists to what degree is moot |

I thought it was stating the obvious and very one dimensional. The people I run with all offer support. Many of the people in my gym while I don't overly engage with them clearly support other members. I could go in with many other examples.
And sone people I know will do everything to deflect their own issues on to other people, not limited to fitness but just a reflection of how some people are |

Yes agree with most of that many indeed are supportive we like to help ,
However the article was referring to those who are not, the author had experienced it I have , I'm sure some others have and others not .
If you have not that's fantastic , sadly I can inform you the group of cyclists who pass where I work are often ridiculed and derided by many others and I do indeed stand by their motives desires and dedication only to have that dismissed |

I agree - ridicule is the wrong way of taking it.
I have to agree that when you are in the zone and want to diet and exercise etc .the ones that can't / won't / are not in the zone are a bad influence.
But I have never experienced ridicule.
I have been on a million fitness / health / diets etc .. and I have to admit the first thing I lost was my sense of humour |

I'd love to agree , and I do
However I may stand firm that instances of ridiculing happen. May I be crystal clear I make no statement about why they do it I'm sure the reasons are varied
The bad influence one is a good one , It would not affect me but I'm sure to some it's not helpful with regards to motivation
I have some lovely friends , their mission is to poison me with alcohol lol
Oooh you have been on one of those diets ? Wild ride isn't it

I can't say I've experienced anything other than support or indifference. When I'm out on my bike dressed in Lycra the vast majority of motorists respectfully pass me giving me plenty of room too. |

Haters going to hate. Why would those cyclists care about people they've never met taking the puss out of them.
If you surround yourself with negative people then all you hear is negativity. I am one of only 2 people I'm an office of 10 who exercises regularly. When I run home I get told it's too hot, too cold, too dark all sorts of reasons why I shouldn't do it. I don't listen to them though. As I've already said it's projection, it's in sone people's nature and while it can be a fucking annoying negative voice that's all it is |

I agree to some degree. When I started running most of my friends were supportive but a few scoffed at my attempts. When I trained for my marathon a few failed to understand that weekends were for running.
Most however were inspired and encouraging.
Most bitterness and ugliness from people comes as a reaction to how you make them feel about themselves. They recognise the thing they don't like I'm them so try to reflect that on you. |

I see the point he is making and agree to a certain extent.
I get all sorts of stupid comments from various people about my training. For some I do believe it's a certain amount of envy that I have the motivation, time and energy to what they'd like to.
For others they're just being wankers.
