Pumpkin challenge.

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

May is just round the corner and it’s getting time to sow the pumpkins in earnest (hence why, in another thread I confess that the dog and I smell of horse shit!).

So do we need to have a fab pumpkin challenge? Who can grow the biggest by Halloween? Any takers?

So are my toms. So slow and I’m not sure why. They’re in a heated propagator too. Cucumbers have gone mad though.

We could have a fab veg show (not meat and two veg lads )!

All our window ledges are crammed full of plants and seedlings. Tomatoes are doing great, peppers a bit slower than I’d like. Only had one courgette seed germinate and it’s getting huge! I’m tempted to sow more but I know if I do I’ll have so many courgettes that I won’t even be able to give them away leeks are growing well, cucumbers could be better as they’ve had poor germinate rate too. I’ve got 2 lovely blue banana squash plants but the butternut have failed so need resowing again. Finally my dwarf beans, runner beans and yard long beans have just started to pop their heads up in the root trainers.

I feel a busy few weeks coming on down at the allotment!

Forgot to mention the brassicas, they went leggy so I threw them outside with the intention of sowing again but they’ve survived the storm at the weekend. Think I’ll probably pot them on and bury them upto the seed leaves and see what happens

"Can you grow pumpkins in a pot? "
youd need a big pot for the main plant but pumpkins send out runners that the pumpkins then grow on so mite work if on decking or patio or let them spread over lawn they take a fair bit of space and in a pot will need lota water and food it's possible thou I guess x

We’ve not done as much as we should, most of the plot needs digging over before we can plant. We’ve been hampered by my asthma being bad this year. I did get a rather lovely wildlife pond installed though, and loads of spuds in last weekend

Pumpkins are really, really greedy and need loads of organic matter like manure or rich compost, and loads of water. It would have to be a huge pot!

Chalk is a pain if you got hardly any top soil have you tried raised beds to get extra layers and if you do them sensible size with buried timber edge you won't get so much run off and waste of horse poop x

"The pumpkin challenge has started in earnest!

As you can see from the avatar, the Atlantic Giant is well on its way.

Just for avoidance of doubt, we’re sticking to manure and not breast feeding it! had to look twice didn't see the pumpkin plant first time very nice and plant looks well to x

Asking the good lady to take off her top so as I could take a picture of my pumpkin plant was met with a very strange look!"

I'm sure it did glad you asked thou and glad she said yes

I think we will have to rely on photographic evidence and a tape measure . A woman's tape measure though rather than a man's

Absolutely not! Doesn’t matter when you started. If you have a pumpkin, or even Tesco squash (from seed ) then you’re in!

You'd probably need to start a little bit later in your neck of the woods anyway Granny. It's the end result that counts anyway.
