What would YOU teach at school?

Music.
At my secondary school (Sunnyside Secondary remand school..Halifax!) we had a teacher,Mr.Elliot, who played a guitar in lessons,inspired more than books on Wolfie Mozart! |

What would I personally teach or what would I like to see taught?
I wish kids were taught more essential life skills such as maths that's actually useful to them - understanding financial markets such as credit cards, interest rates, VAT etc.
I'd probably teach about trade unionism and collective bargaining. Employee rights and corporate responsibility and all that jazz. |

RE is now ethics.
They should have manner's lessons (half of them really need it as they aren't taught this at home). |

That sort of stuff should be taught by parents
I'd happily get rid of RE though. Waste of time religion is. |

didn't know that about "Ethics".When i was at school I wanted to do cookery ,think that's called home economics now ,but wasn't allowed as it was woodwork or stand in a bin so I stood in a bin for a few years. now all the top chefs are men! |

Personally I’d do away with history, why do we need to learn about Nelson?, we’re never going to meet him.
History???, it’s a thing of the past, no future in it.

as I walk round the city centre many people seem to be speaking fluent Polish so 'language' lessons in the education system are working well!

(are we still teaching French in schools when we could be teaching Polish or Urdu )? |

My kids go to a forest school and get home schooled. Luckily as parents we have the skills to do this and the time. Made the decision last year as they were getting anxious and stressed by the school system that is so pressurised towards test after test after test.
The amount they were made to simply copy down and to write copious amounts, without learning why or what is important in life is ridiculous.
We send them to school to learn about life and hope that they get the grounding and skills to achieve their dreams, but all they have done is undo all the work we as parents have put in before they went off to school.
I know lots of teachers who are getting fed up with not being able to teach the way they want to. Since making the decision our kids are thriving, learning things they would never have done in school, and they still learn maths and English etc, but the stuff that matters in life.
Most of all they are being given the opportunity to learn in a way that suits them and will not be made into little robots that have no thoughts of their own which in my view is what the current system does.
Sorry if my views seem strong! However, I do believe something needs to change.

Huge kudos to you for being able to provide your kids with such and awesome start in life.
The current education system is still mostly running on the Victorian Factory system, teaching small people to shut up and follow orders ready for when their bosses require that skill set.
I know enough disillusioned teachers that my forest school would probably have more staff than kids to start with lol |

This is brilliant. School is awful now. Kids learn nothing and know nothing. Just learn for an exam then forget it all as the next exam has to be prepared for. The dangers of a target based system.
Most important for me is social skills. How to interact with people. How to respect people. How to respect differences in people.
After that, we should decide as a country what skills we need for the future. What we want people to do. Base all education around that. Make university free for subjects that are in that plan. Make the entrance criteria harder though.
Not everyone needs to go to uni. Make vocational training as important. Respect vocational training more.
We no longer prepare kids to become contributing young adults due to massive failings in our education system. |

I was a teacher in a SN school.
I absolutely loved my job, but had to leave to become a full time carer.
If I was to return to teaching, something I have thought of alot now my caring role is reduced, then I'd use the skills I've learnt through previous/other careers.
I'd love to teach health & nutrition, physical education.
A lot of people these days have absolutely no idea how to cook a healthy balanced meal, from scratch.
Cooking is becoming a dying art, ready meals, convinience food, take aways are rapidly becoming the staple diet of this generation.
Add in the technical age we live in, no one walks anywhere, kids playing games online with their friends rather than running round in the park together.

I agree but the number of parents who seem to want to hand over more power to the education system requiring it to be responsible for teaching morals and life skills is shocking in my opinion. The system of education we have is the one we deserve in my opinion. I was glad to see the demo against testing of four year olds yesterday and the school age climate change protestors so there is hope |

Life lessons as we seem to be sending our teenagers into the big wide world without a clue.They then crumble at the slightest thing..some i might add not all.
Respect for others should be instilled by parents is is more often than it should be lacking.

I don't have the patience to teach, I just don't have it in me, don't get me wrong, I love my kids (step kids included) but I couldn't be around anyone else's kids all day |
