They don’t pollute the environment, take up less space than cars, they burn fat not oil. They get to work feeling energised and therefore are more productive.

They always seem to forget that if everyone on a bike was in car instead, they’d be sat in traffic longer.

I was told the same at my proficiency test about 45 years ago. Teaching and opinions change over time and that is reflected in the latest highway codes I guess. It’s still not a good idea to ride 2 abreast round here though, narrow winding country lanes, if you ride 2 abreast you’re likely to be taken out by a car or tractor coming round the corner.

Do I post a weeks work of clothes to myself in advance?

Cyclists are awesome! I absolutely adore the ones who decide to avoid using the cycle lanes (that the motorist paid for) and elect to use the inside lane of the road instead! Marvellous...oh and the ones who need not observe simple red or green traffic signals...awesome too....

and when a cyclist ends up in a ditch, under the wheels of a proper vehicle or in casualty it's ALWAYS the driver of the motor vehicle's fault....

cyclists are an important species and we humans must do our best to protect them

I regularly ride with a club, if there are around 6 of us, we'll ride 2-abreast as it's far safer to overtake a shorter group than if we were strung out (the car would be on the wrong side of the road for twice as long).

On a narrow road we'll single out if there's a long straight so any car behind can pass safely (assuming there's nothing coming).

If it's a single track road, a car will never be able to pass us safely, so we would stay 2-up in order to prevent any silly wankers trying and putting us all at risk.

Most cyclists are also drivers - if we're riding in a way that prevents you passing, it's usually because it's not safe and we're trying to protect ourselves, and you. Don't forget, our eyeline is usually a foot or so higher than a car driver so we can see over hedges and hear oncoming traffic.

That said, there are a similar percentage of twats on bikes as there are twats in cars.

Firstly, there's no such thing as Road Tax, you pay Vehicle Excise Duty based on the emissions of your vehicle.

All tax goes into one central treasury pot - no tax is ring-fenced for one particular use.

I love driving around the narrow roads of Pembrokeshire being unable to move freely due to large numbers of cyclists. I particularly enjoy the head on collision I have to avoid at least once a month by the idiots overtaking cyclists on blind bends.

I really enjoy having to move quickly out of the way of cyclists every day in London that are running through red lights (green for pedestrians) because they cannot be bothered to wait and think lights are only for cars. Love the cyclists who are happy talking on their mobile phones and the ones riding all over the pavements or the wrong way down streets that then knock pedestrians over (I haver seen a number of these in London). All the while blaming the pedestrian.

Yes, cars are far more dangerous and break the same laws. But nowhere near the frequency that cyclists do.

It is not the majority obviously, and I am 100% sure all posting here are safe cyclists that follow every law and are 100% considerate for other road users.

I myself used to cycle a lot and was nearly killed by an articulated lorry that side swiped me when overtaking me on a blind bridge, so I know how dangerous it can be. But let's not pretend that cycling is perfect - which too many cyclists do. Or use whataboutism. That is a popular one as well.

"I love driving around the narrow roads of Pembrokeshire being unable to move freely due to large numbers of cyclists. I particularly enjoy the head on collision I have to avoid at least once a month by the idiots overtaking cyclists on blind bends.

"

But how us the dangerous driving the fault of the cyclist?

I have nothing at all against cyclists but I do wish they would be aware of their own STINK! Guys, you get sweaty on your bike ride and when you get to the office, the sweat dries and the BO comes out in full force. You probably don't notice it because it's your own smell, but no amount of deodorant or body spray covers up that nasty smell. For those of you that have a shower in your workplace - USE IT! For those that don't - please wipe down your stinky pits in the toilets before inflicting your BO on everyone else. Thank you

But nowhere near the frequency that cyclists do.

."

I assume that you've neve notices the vast amount of cars that tailgate a line of trafficc through a changing light in London? Or the pedestriansignoring crossings?

London is ridiculously overcrowded and that's the problem.

As for your claim about cyclists breakibg laws more frequently than motorists, maybe walk along any line of traffic and see how many morists are using their phone? How many motorists get speeding tickets each year? How many motorists get charged with driving offences? Or drink driving? His many people get killed or injured in accidents where motorists are prosecuted?

I'm pretty much sure those numbers dwarf the numbers cominting offenses on 2 wheels

I used to see that outside a gym car park in Blackpool. Motorists used to drive right to the front doors to save walking across the car.park..dry weather ..one billion cctv cameras, I thought that was funny..

I'm lucky enough to live in the sparsely-populated North West where the air smells clean and fresh.

The thing I hate most about going to big cities like London is the constant smell of exhaust fumes. I usually can't get out of their fast enough!

Funnily enough, I don't think anyone ever got cancer, asthma or COPD from a bit of BO.

"No. "

^ this.

I don't mind 'people who ride bikes', they're generally OK - it's when they all of a sudden metamorphose into full 'cyclists' and they develop lycra skin and start riding carbon fibre steeds that cost more than a 10 year old 7 Series. All of a sudden their noses creep lower over their handlebars, posterior raised in a display akin to that of the Mandrill. No road on Dartmoor or the New Forest is free of huge groups of these brightly courted lemmings riding six abreast, painstakingly croaking their way up hills at 2.5mph, blocking you so you can't pass, then sailing down at 50mph breaking the speed limit so you can't pass safely.

"breaking the speed limit so you can't pass safely.

Why do you need to pass if they're riding above the speed limit?"

Because otherwise you have to follow them up the next hill at 2.5mph

Which is extremely uneconomical in most motor vehicles let alone frustrating.

It's the same as people who cannot exceed 40 in an NSL stretch 9f single carriageway then promptly speed up to 100 on the only overtaking stretch so nobody can pass without serious effort...

Here's an idea... Why don't you just follow safely without breaking the law and then overtake when they slow down?

Or are you one of those typical motoring morons who see a cyclist and simply *have* to get past?

I average around 20mph on most rides, in a 30mph zone (assuming it's flat) I have no problem riding at 30mph. But you always get some dickhead trying to push past. Why??

"I think road works and alterations to the road network are paid from road tax and yes lots of cyclists are car owners....so bloody use them!!!

Firstly, there's no such thing as Road Tax, you pay Vehicle Excise Duty based on the emissions of your vehicle.

All tax goes into one central treasury pot - no tax is ring-fenced for one particular use. "

It's not based upon emmsions. There's not a single motorcycle that pays VED based on emmsions. For vans it's based on engine size and not emmissions. Under 1.6 lt and over 1.6 Lt up to 3.5 tonne.

Most care are not based up on emmissions, that is only one small part the is factored in to the VED grouping. Most now is based upon age (a new car at zero emmissions will cost £135/yr, a new zero emissions car which is classed as luxury and 4x4 will be put in a different VED band. Older vehicles pre 1978 I think it's without checking are VED free, some are very pollutant. So to sum it up, it's bollox all to do with emmissions, but about printing money for tax purposes, so it is a form of tax which VED is.

That's not really what I'm complaining about. No issue with people using road responsibly like that. I'm talking about the 20 strong hordes of unfit MAMILs riding six abreast up skinny undulating hilly roads, 2.5 mph on the way up, 40 mph on the way down. Queue of thirty cars behind them being forced to drive up steep hills at the same pace as the cyclist which results in burning a load more fuel than usual.
