Scottish maritime museum are removing all references to ships being female entities on all information signs.
I've no issue with it either way, though there seem to be plenty who do.
Never thought they were the most feminine of machines. |

Good job the French / Spanish / Italians don't have this bizarre need to remove gender associations with everything ... the change to their language would be a nightmare
When do they plan to change the name of manhole covers? |

Really!!!
It’s a matter of history that ships were referred to as “she” etc.
It comes from the fact that all sailors were male and needed some sort of female attachment hence “treat her like a lady and she will always get you home”.
Is this to be more PC?
I hope not as erasing history just in case it might somehow offend is not the way to go!!
I remember talking to a Chinese woman on Snowdon and she had no idea who Genghis Khan was as it seems the Chinese government don’t want their people to know they were conquered by a nomad from Mongolia!!!
I am sure she knew of the Fab persona of GK though.

Nothing surprises me anymore unfortunately.
There was once a time I was so patriotic and would never leave this country. I live for the day in about 10 years when I’m getting the fuck out of here. |

Oh my god
I think it's a feminist or manist thing. The signs have been vandalised, so now they've edited them according to Radio 4.
The Chinese used to hide the fact Ghengis Khan existed. Now they are beginning to look for ways they can lay claim and connection to him. Make him Chinese.
I know it's history and I call my cars names sometimes, maybe I've never owned my own boat, so don't feel the same attachment?
If I did, it'd be a pirate Man O War.

I was walking along the canal with my nine year old daughter at weekend and she asked me a question about why all the boats had ladies names - I had no answer other than to say that sailers were mostly men in the olden days, so she replies "but that makes no sense?" and I shrug..... |
