FAB CRAP RUNNERS CLUB 2019 - WEEK FIFTEEN

Jump to: Newest in thread

By *uit and boots OP   Man  over a year ago

Manchester

Hello everyone and welcome to WEEK FIFTEEN of the FAB Crap Runners Club (2019 edition).

.

.

.

MOTTO: We run #LikeAToddlerChasingAPug

.

.

.

EXPLANATION AND ETHOS:

EVERYONE is welcome in the Fab Crap Runners' Club (the crapper the better).

From 1st January 2018, a bunch of Fabbers began improving their fitness through running. None of them were natural athletes but they did it anyway.

.

.

.

FOR COMPLETE BEGINNERS:

"Couch to 5k" (C25K) is a nine-week running programme for absolute beginners, available on various free phone apps (Mrs T used Get Running). But you can join this thread to get fit by any means including walking and cycling - all are welcome. If you're expecting to be utterly crap at it (I mean reeeeeeeeeally bad), you're in the right place. Join the thread, tell us what your aim is and we'll cheer you on each week, just for trying.

.

.

.

FOR MORE EXPERIENCED RUNNERS:

Tell us what you’re up to with your running, your training and your races. Let’s us know your highs and lows. Please cheer on the newbies and give advice if they ask.

.

.

.

FCRC SOCIAL PARKRUN

I am doing a doodle poll to find out where everyone can get to with ease before organising the next social.

https://doodle.com/poll/77nghmke7uwunrwy

Again, it's completely anonymous and you can vote for as many options as you would like.

Hopefully the regions are self-explanatory (Sorry if you think your county should be in a different region!)

I'm in the process of organising locations for parkruns. I'm thinking one a month in the different regions.

.

.

.

AND FINALLY:

Who is working towards a specific goal? Tell us your progress.

Morning all & Happy Easter

Just got back from parkrun on a wonderful sunny morning.

Only a week to go to the London Marathon for me, eek!

Anyone else got anything in the immediate pipeline?

just jogged 1.5 miles. Most for a very long time. Try and jog 1km regularly. I used to run a lot - mostly when reffing rugby so about 5 miles a game - but shin splints get really painful.

They seem to be under control at present so will try and run more now,

Hopefully. I used to ref 3 games a weekend only about 7 years ago, so was pretty fit - albeit always overweight. I'm too old to ref again now, but it would be nice to get fit again. I don't have the time for the gym, but can try and make time for running most days - even if to and from the tube.

I've had a quiet couple of weeks since Manchester marathon and even missed parkrun today. Volunteered at a local event yesteady which was fun although some runners really are idiots!

I need to get done races signed up for the summer as only definite plan at the moment is Race The Train in august

Good plan, I made the mistake of not signing up for anything after my last marathon and lost all my fitness and motivation. Is that Race the Train the one up here? Never done it but quite intrigued as it looks a lot of fun.

One of the things i’d missed about a higher level of fitness is being able to run for the train without collapsing in in an asthmatic heap whether I caught it or not

Been down in Newquay for a little break and inspired to start training again, now the evenings are longer and I have no excuse about the weather. I have signed up to do the oxford town and gown in a couple of weeks but I am at square one with training due to personal bits and pieces so going to sit that one out. Also moving up to Brum in August time, so I’ll be looking forward to exploring some new routes then!

That's a shame about the Oxford event, but if your not ready, it's not worth an injury

But loving the positive attitude! keep us updated with how your progress

I normally have loads of events lined up so there's always a focus but I have to have eye surgery in May and best case scenario is a few weeks off. So I'm all out of sorts as I've no idea when I can enter stuff again and start proper training again post op. With hindsight I should have entered a later marathon than Manchester but I didn't know my surgery date so I banked on the earliest marathon...

I think I'm going to try and find a half for the week before my op and force myself to train!

On a plus point there's isn't a better excuse for a pair of Oakleys to run in than a medical necessity!!

Hi All, a retuning crap runner here.

I hate running. I reserve the word hate for special things and running is one of them.

I hate running. I got into the habit of doing it last year but working festivals, being homeless, moving to Bristol and a couple of injuries (one permanent) put it on hold. The ONLY reason I do it is because the health benefits are overwhelmingly positive and I feel high afterwards.

Tonight I tested my knee and lungs and went for a short jog around the block. Not as bad as I thought I’d be and I’m never going to be able to do hills again but it felt good.

Oh, I hate parkrun too!

Sorry to hear of your injuries

Couldn’t agree more about the post run feeling though, especially when you’ve not been in the mood beforehand. Hope you manage to keep on getting out.

Went for a 5k run Sunday evening in the vague hopes I was fairly well again. I wasn't. Hoofed around in a reasonable time given I was hungry, in a smart pair of jeans and not great. Coughing like an old man rest of the evening.

Am trying to help a friend run more and trying to pace her to a sub 30 (ideal whilst I am not at my peak)

Shocking parkrun on Saturday, really struggled for no obvious reason and way down on where I normally am both timewise and position

And then the complete reverse today, local village fun run, not fast but lovely course and one of the most enjoyable runs I've had in months!

What a great idea first club.

I've always been crap at running. Second last in primary school was my best.

I did some 10k in my thirties and just started jigging again last year, after stopping smoking. Like to listen to podcasts while jogging with my dogs.

When I was doing 10k I used to run with a friend - she'd say "focus on that woman's arse and try to keep it in sight" .

I'd have starved in hunter-gatherer times ...

I know this feeling only too well; just did my first run in 7 years (6km) and it hurt so much, this used to be a breeze and now I feel like an old Cart Horse. It's hard to let go of the past and accept that I'm old with a health issues; but at least it's fittness so I'd best get used to it and learn to enjoy jogging.

I went out and did it again today but it seemed harder than wed is this because I have a day off in between? Whereas after working it feels better "

Every run is different, depends on what you've ate and drank, the weather, if you pushed harder and your mental state

As _elfastblond observed: can be a lot of factors; but also if you’ve not done much recently, then that’s a big step up. Also, time of day can affect how you perform (*running*!!!)

Try to: keep to the plan; eat right; sleep better. You *will* improve. If there’s a Parkrun nearby, then try that out too; it doesn’t matter if all you do is walk round the 5km, because there will be a designated tail-ender to go with you.

"I managed 6.2km this evening, it felt quite tough but I think that I need to find my pacing again, I'm shocked how out of tune I feel with my body right now.

no no no...you answered your own question...'first run in 7 years, & 6km is a long run for that kind of lay off. Recover well, & start slowly, or should I say gradually although slowly might be an idea, look into couch to 5k as a start or adapt if you feel you can run further than that...Jogging? I just wanted to say a massive thank you to FCRC and all those who have commented/given support. I honestly wouldn't have got to where I am now if it wasn't for you lot

I started C25K on Jan 1st 2018. I was crap at running and I mean seriously crap at running! And through your support/nagging/arse kicking I continued to complete a 5k and 10k charity race last year. Today I managed to complete my first half marathon!!

I want to thank two amazing Fabsters who have been there through all my anxious wobbles, Walking Disaster and Bike Monkey, you two are an inspiration to me xx

Hello, I'm new to this thread, I just spotted it and thought "Hey I'm crap at exercise!". I'm painfully unfit, I weighed myself the other day and I'm ashamed to admit that I now weigh the same as I did the day BEFORE I gave birth at 10 days overdue I downloaded a C25K app but have yet to even open it.

I need a running buddy who is just as crap as I am but really bossy so they're able to force me to do some exercise

I'm also the worlds worst (best?) procrastinator, I plan to overcome this, one day...

If you can try and run every other day and rest in between. Once you start tell us on here how you did and we'll encourage you and if you don't do it then tell us and we can push you that's how I started.

At first it seems hard but you can do it and you'll feel uplifted when you're done because you'll surprise yourself then you'll enjoy it (so they say lol!)

Great advice, thank you. Yes, never great to just dive straight into strenuous exercise. I should be added some context; I also cycle now (restarted about 2 months ago after a 2 year break) so my muscles weren't entirely unexercised.

Also have a history of road racing (running) at a fairly high level behind me. Been out there time's now and doing about 27 mins for 5k. I'm going to stick to this pace for a while and try to consolidate my performance with an aim to bring it down to the low 20s by Christmas. My main aim is my cycling; currently doing about 100 miles a week; I'll not increase this by much but will try to improve my average time per mile.

And, yes, we are all runners! This thread has helped me to try running again; all these stories are so inspiring - think you guys are amazing!

Good morning.

I haven’t participated to this thread .

I have just started couch to 10K after 2 and half years battling with both ankles sprained , thorn ligaments and ripped hamstring.

I need to do this but my ankles are weak and my confidence is low .

However I am starting tomorrow week 2 and I’m running through fields and woods as it’s much relaxing.

Hi everyone, group newbie here! I'm starting Couch to 5K today, never been a runner before but just want to improve my general fitness and do a bit of self-help on the old asthma front.

I recently moved right by the Olympic Park, so I've got the park, Hackney Marshes and Walthamstow Wetlands on my doorstep to explore. No excuse now!

Doing c25k or c210k will build strength up around the calf muscles which will hopefully protect your ankles, also what are doing in the fields and woods will build up strength just be careful you don't twist an ankle on a loose twig. Hope it goes well, keep posting in your progress and good luck!

What great places to have on your doorstep to run around. Listen carefully to your plan even if it sounds easy just follow the plan don't overdo it as it will get harder. Running is great for asthma I know some great runners who suffer from it and you wouldn't know. Just make sure you have your inhaler handy. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress

I'm onto the 10k app, I struggled doing a continuous run for 5k so opted for the 10 as I get 1min walking in between, which does really help me, today I was doing 3x15 mins with the 1 min in between, now on the first set I was ready to walk before she let me the second set I was about to walk as she told me and the third set I hadn't finished my loop around the park and I continued for nearly another 5 mins......I don't know if this is because I know I'm finishing that I get the extra energy or something else

I have about 150m elevation, the best thing about the ups is there's always downs I don't think I could do a straight flat run

I ran my park run PB at Hackney marshes a few years ago. Well worth giving it a go as from memory it was a very friendly event.

There's a company called runthrough who put loads of events on at the Olympic Park, always a cool place to run, you're lucky to have it on your doorstep!

So I had eye surgery a couple of weeks back and have been laid up thanks to complications during the procedure. Nothing like being told you can't run to help you find a lost mojo!

First run back last night, 10km after work and it felt so good to be out again!

And tonight I started putting a training plan together for Amsterdam marathon

it will help if you do simple strength exercises on your non run days to build some resilience into tendons, ligaments & muscles. Calf raises (can be done whilst making a cup of tea, in a queue or anytime you are on your feet) will help with ankles, hamstrings will respond to squats possibly if there is a strength imbalance with quads predisposing you to strains/tears. Hard to know obviously thru the medium of a forum on a swinging site!

Went for a run again today, finished work this morning still on 3x15 mins and the first 2 were really hard but the last bit of the last one is flat then downhill, I ran an extra 5 mins.

Not sure how far as I don't use strava on my spare phone and I've not gone this far before lol but I still have to jump straight out or I'll talk myself out of it when does it become fun?

Finding this thread really inspiring. My return to running (after 7 years off) is proving to be fun and I've already increased my distance to 4.5 miles and increased my average speed by 30 seconds a mile.

I only run once a week (occasionally twice) but find it makes a nice break from cycling. No aspirations to compete or do any events but reading about what you guys are achieving has brought me back to running and is keeping me going.

Male half here. Just had a go at 5000m on the treadmill and I finally broke through the 12km/hr mark. I did it in 24' 41". Its a start anyway.

Considered it but so many other good halves around at that time of year and I'm not committing to a half this far out when I don't know what marathon I'll be running next spring. It's a really good event though

I should just add a little bit more detail. I did run many many years ago (races etc) but this was my first timed 5000m run for 28 years.

Some of us are trying to beat the clock and others are happy to beat the distance. The good thing is that everybody on here is at least having a go. A guy on the next treadmill yesterday was so heavy - he could just about walk but at least he was there having a go.

Managed the first 2km of park run this morning in a fraction over 10 minutes and finished in just under 28 minutes. Safe to say I under estimated the heat and blew spectacularly at half way!

Spending all day tomorrow working at a local triathlon which will pay for my trip to Amsterdam for the marathon later this year

Finished 5th overall (out of 129) in a 5k race today! Quite hilly and obviously hot so not a PB by far. But quite chuffed with my place. 2nd in age group too.

I beat my 5k personal best this morning: 22’05. This 22 min threshold is still eluding me! But I’m in its case! Watch out !

Fastest parkrun since April yesterday and another 15km in the afternoon. Feeling surprisingly okay today considering that's my longest run for 3 months!

So anyway there's an ultra next July, basically how many times can you run up and down snowdon in 24 hours. What sort of lunatic would think entering that was a good idea
