What do you remember from your first job?

Bedford

I remember a fax machine that curled up the paper, having a tea lady who came around, nobody having a computer on their desk and smoking allowed in the office.

Christ, I feel old. What do you remember for ye olden days?

"Getting paid in cash"

I was given a check to cash at the bank up the road every Friday afternoon.

I think my wages were £16 a week.

Hitchin

Dropping a guy's motorcycle that I'd been asked to move.

He was a trucker and this bike was his pride and joy. He was also a massive hard bastard.

I had a few hours to wait for him before he got back to the depot and my colleagues delighted in telling me the various ways he'd kill me. I was maybe 15 and absolutely shitting myself.

It was tea break when the door to the staffroom flew off its hinges and this guy filled the door frame enraged. I threw myself to the floor full of apologies and begging for mercy!

Fortunately, he saw that I was a silly young boy set up by workmates and let me go with my life!

How poorly paid it was!!

And how much fecking walking i had to do as i was 17 and was treated as a Gofer.

“We need a letter hand delivered to the Court. Over 10 miles away. If you leave now you may get back to the office before we close”

Them were the days!

Sussex countryside

I had a huge electric typewriter and the printer had a box of paper under it, that was all joined together, large green striped sheets.

I loved it, I worked in an engineering firm and was the only lady, bloody brilliant it was.
