Another thread about wise people reminded me of a story I heard a while back , I will always remember it as it bought a tear to my eye . Sometimes children can teach us all . This was written by a vet who felt compelled to share this story to the world , so here goes .....
Being a vet I had been called to examine a 10 year old Irish Wolfhound . The dogs owners and their 6 year old son , were all very attached to their beloved family pet , and they were hoping all was well .
I examined him and sadly found that he was dying of cancer , and had to break the news to the family that, sadly , it would be the best thing for him and then , to put the dog to sleep . As we made arrangements for this, the couple thought that it would be a good idea to let their young son observe the procedure , hoping he would learn something from the procedure .
The following day , they bought the poor mite in for the procedure, and their 6 year old son . He seemed so calm as I inserted the needle , petting his beloved friend for the last time as he peacefully slipped away .
To my astonishment the young boy seemed to accept the death without any difficulty or confusion.
As the family and I discussed why dogs lives are shorter than humans , the son suddenly spoke up to say " i know why " . Startled , we all turned to him . What he said amazed us and lives with me to this very day and has changed the way I try to live . He said " people are born so they can learn how to be good and live a good life , and how to love people and be nice , right ?? We nodded . He then said " Well Dogs already know how to do that , so they dont have to be here for as long do they " .
Makes you think hey. Hope this helped if anyone reads this
