It's Easter

The protests in France

Most visited site in Paris

Many visitors from the world at this time

Brexit

EU issues

Could it create pity for France?

Could it be used for national sympathy/unity?

Is it a coincidence or a timely occurrence?

Not that I’m fully supporting every point of the OP, it did cross my mind earlier this evening that in the face of tragedy, this event may be the catalyst for European unity .

I love your blame matters not, there are investigators who investigate such matters as fire and it's not about blame it's about cause of. I would expect any rational person to be interested in the cause of. We all consider different parameters the only ones not included are the absolutely impossible.

Actually while you are correct that the fire investigation will look for a cause, the evidence can still be used to apportion blame.

Am I interested in the cause? Not really, it's tragic what's happened regardless of why it happened

The main question is, why is there no contingency plan to prevent something like this in the first place?

If I was in charge of St Paul's cathedral, I would seriously start thing about preventing something like this from happening.

York Minster, the art gallery in Scotland have been ravaged by fire.

Surely this ought to be preventable?

You would think so, but in the case of the Glasgow School of Art the rebuilding and restoration from the 2014 fire was almost complete when the building was ravaged again by second fire in 2018

I was referring to Kaitlin's comment. Westminster palace was a political target and ready to be destroyed in the gunpowder plot, whereas the French revolutionaries left their palace intact and just went for the establishment instead.

I watched the coverage on BBC and found their attitude so condescending.

They were asked eye-witnesses on the street if the fire service was tardy in its response.

FFS!

There were hundreds of fire- fighters trying to save not only the structure but also the buildings nearby.

One of them was seriously injured.

This morning, their reporter said it was "luck" that saved the North Tower.

I had to switch off. It was the fire-fighters who saved the North Tower.

Imagine if the rolling coverage of Grenfell was peppered with slurs about the fire-fighters. There would be uproar.

Donald Tusk already suggested the whole of Europe contributing to the rebuild costs. Macron said he's launching a world wide restoration fund, both seem to garner sympathy and say look how strong a united EU is. I didnt see the EU paying for Windsor Castle's rebuild after a fire, but then again Brexit wasn't threatening to break up their, personal, lucrative monopoly.

This is Quote from a friend, not my personal views but just to add to the debate...

It’s just a building.

a building that represents an evil, oppressive, child tampering, murderous regime to be exact. No one died as it burned...but plenty of innocents have died for what it stood for.

The Israelis and the Saudis are murdering Palestinian and Yemeni children every single day...and your stolen tax pennies fund it...but the news doesn’t want you to be bothered about that.

400 million has already been donated for the rebuild, imagine if that kind of money was used to help the homeless and elderly!

Could it create pity for France?

Could it be used for national sympathy/unity?

Is it a coincidence or a timely occurrence?

How did you even begin to come up with that? Honestly what you are suggesting is rubbish. It's laughable. What does Brexit have to do with it? What does EU issues even mean? And why do the french need to create pity?

Its probably to do with this:

The far right have mobilised on social media already. Katie Hopkins is using it as a metaphor for the "Islamification" of France although just steering clear of the "It was a Muslim wot done it" crowd.

A spokesperson for the building company has stated no workers where on site that day.

There is obviously the posibilitly of an electrical fire (dodgy battery charger for example), or some things can self ignite like cloths soaked in linseed oil used to finish wood. Glass bottles left on a sunny window cill can act like a magnifying glass.

There are lots of possibilities including unattended candles used for worship and even that someone may have started it deliberately.

According to the article I linked before 800+ churches a year are vandalized in France with the rate increasing by 25% in the first few months of this year. Arson has been confirmed among these attacks.

This thread is eye opening. Conspiracy theorists claiming they aren’t seeing a conspiracy, but conflating the fire in Paris with one in Jerusalem and then trying to establish a link to Abrahamist religion.

By all means go off and do some research, maybe a Degree, an MA and a PhD, spend time in and with each of these religions. Develop a deep understanding of them. Then if you have some facts to put forward a hypothesis that you are willing to have challenged by your peers, please feel free to go ahead.

Unfortunately, I see nothing of this here. Just some fantasist belief system reinforced by other fantasists. Michael Gove is an idiot, but sadly his commentary that people ‘have had enough of experts’ is quite telling.

Do you also have the authority to tell people that they can't pass comment on current affairs?

Do you realise the absurdity of telling people they must go and study a PhD to allow them to comment on a news headline, whilst at the same time making your own unqualified wild accusations without cause, reason or consideration of the facts and evidence.

Do you have a masters in false logic and a PhD in bending the truth, to qualify the opinion you just posted as fact without adding any support or reasoning that can be "peer reviewed"?

"The main question is, why is there no contingency plan to prevent something like this in the first place?

If I was in charge of St Paul's cathedral, I would seriously start thing about preventing something like this from happening.

York Minster, the art gallery in Scotland have been ravaged by fire.

Surely this ought to be preventable?

You would think so, but in the case of the Glasgow School of Art the rebuilding and restoration from the 2014 fire was almost complete when the building was ravaged again by second fire in 2018"

Now that one is a heart wrencher, Rennie would be raging. And hardly covered in the news unlike some wank box in France.

I wouldn't be too sure about that.

With tax relief on charitable donations it looks like it will be publicly funded. Albeit through the back door.

Or where you just hoping to discredit people with insults and hope nobody saw the hypocrisy in your post?

Woooooooaaaaahh, that was well put (claps hands)

Thank you"

I’ll put it more simply, observe what you see, question what you don’t know, opine when you have some evidence. Comment if you think it fits with some weird conspiracy fantasy you have - come on...

"This thread is eye opening.

I observed that there has been previous arson attacks on churches in France, I questioned if it was possible for this to be the cause of the notre-dame fire and I stated and displayed my reason and posted links for peer review. What's your point, and where is your evidence?

You will find that no one here has asserted that there is an ulterior motive to this fire, merely questioned what happened. You will also find that the only people failing to give any evidence are the ones dismissing others as conspiracy theorists.

"Notre Dame fire if people believe jesus turned water into wine then the building will be restored without public funding.

Going by the number of french billionaires and businesses falling over themselves to donate, looks like it will be restored without public funding

Hallelujah

I wouldn't be too sure about that.

With tax relief on charitable donations it looks like it will be publicly funded. Albeit through the back door.

As for the conspiracy. All the signs point to it being a tragic accident.

However that won't stop Macron from milking it for all its worth. "

What signs ?. Have they discovered the cause already !

You're reading way too much into my post on a bonkers thread. It was posted around 1.30am when I couldn't sleep.

Does anyone else but me find it a little bizarre that millions of religious folk are praying to give thanks that Notre Dame didn't completely burn down? If they believe their god has that power, who the hell do they think was responsible for the fire consuming all that it did?

So, we could wait until the investigators conclude their analysis, produce a report and propose lessons learned. At the moment we have one fact, Notre Dame was largely destroyed by fire, beyond that we have purely conjecture based on fantasy. Maybe the report will support the fantasy, but I’m not holding my breath, by which time people will have moved onto the next piece of sensationalism to satisfy their need for immediate ‘answers’

Just a pity Grenfell Tower did not have any priceless artefacts in its rooms, only people.

In a town Fab forgot

My favourite comments on the fire so far;

Comment - after all the aftermath and destruction of the Notre Dame fire the cross and alter remained untouched. Please explain how you don't believe in God after that.

Reply - because gold melts at 1064 degrees and wood burns at 600 degrees. Science.

Initial indications are something to do with the roof maintainence i think is the last thing the fire brigade said

Tracking down the exact cause might take a while but you have to rember these places weren't exactly built to any kind of fire code. It doesnt take much to get wood coated in flammable vanishes and laqucre going.

"Jeez is this really a "thing" have not long finished a "discussion" on FB with someone who was full of pro-Brexit conspiracy theory around Notre Dame "

Well I heard that it was to do with brexit as the French switched brands of Quasimodo's favourite whisky to an inferior European brand , So Quasimodo got the HUMP and went on the rampage causing the fire whilst shouting the Bells the Bells
