An April's morning 2019, in West Yorkshire. Never did I imagine this would happen ...

I line up in a queue to be served in an orderly fashion. A couple of builder type of guys a friendly looking lady and a kid not older than 8yrs old(all white). 2 Girls serving behind counter(1 asian,1 white) and me the brown Brit.

The kid starts shouting 'Go back to Pakistan'(not all brown people originate from there, ya know lol) and the 2 guys and the friendly looking woman just laugh. He repeatedly keeps shouting this and the adults keep laughing

What do you do ?

In my trivial way I just said 'it's a good job I don't understand English' ...

And then upon being served I said to the Asian girl that I would have refused to serve people like that.

Was I right to leave it at just that or should I take this further?

Awful

The women serving probably ignore it rather than getting confrontational because the little shit would probably put their windows through.

Sad state of affairs.

I call the 2 servers girls because they were no more than 18yrs old. What affected me the most was the 'friendly' looking woman, not so much the guys with the kid. The woman could have been his mum and she just laughed instead of calming the kid down. The more they laughed the more the kid started saying it.

This incident has affected me in a way I never thought possible. What are all these friendly faces really thinking about me or people with my origins.

I am thick skinned and grew up around all different skin colours and in my younger days always treated skin colour jokes etc as banter. Never was I told to go back to where my parents could originate from.

This from a kid ...

Unbelievable

Absolutely appalling .

I would have asked him to justify it . Loud and clear I’d have said “ excuse me but why ? “ and embarrassed him and the twats that laughed thinking it was funny .

Sad state of affairs, I'm not sure what I would have done, I'd like to think I would have said something but honestly don't know.

I was speaking to someone recently who told me about a school that had arranged a visit to a mosque for year 1 kids. Out of 27 in the class only 5 were given permission to visit from parents/ carers. How can we break down barriers and prejudices if we dont allow our minds to be opened.

You can always think of better ways to react with hindsight

The problem isn't yours to address though (although clearly it does impacts upon you), its with the twats shouting the insults to realise what they're doing wrong and sadly a reaction from you is never going to penetrate their neanderthal....

The tables could have turned and I could have been seen as the bad one for speaking out to a kid.

If the kid has venom coming from his mouth could you imagine what the adults would be capable of ...

This is the unsettling thought.

It felt like to try and justify anything would have got me in a more dangerous situation.

So I just had to keep quiet and make a comment as I did and hope they would understand that I felt uncomfortable.

I used to get comments like that all the time from other kids growing up in a white middle class town in the late 70's 80's.

Once a middle aged woman pushed in front of me in a queue and told me to get out of the way you little fucking paki.

I was about 10.

My mum was white British and my dad black Caribbean

As an adult I can see that this woman was a racist idiot.

But I remember going home and crying about it.

i'm not surprised to be honest, racism is pretty rife. The only difference being people are expressing their views more openly and not afraid to do so.

i'm british asian and this happens many a time. Things like brexit certainly haven't helped, but for a second we must also remember that this notion also stems from the behaviour of certain communities

I'm really sorry to hear that OP.

It wasn't acceptable in the 60's and 70's never mind now.

As to what to do? I have no experience per se of behaviour like that (well apart from threats of violence but thats another story). I am horrified that the crowd turned a blind eye and found it funny somehow. However, reprimanding the "little darlings" may have caused an escalation.

I live in hope that one day we as a species can evolve enough to look back in horror at events like this and can treat everyone as equals. I fear we won't though.

A violent approach never entered my mind. That's against the principles I have been brought up with.

A stern word or 2 might have been the better approach but then how would the people around him react, they seemed to be encouraging him.

When you are a minority in such a situation the tables can easily be turned on me. As mentioned by others in this thread the political climate and media portrayal of events around the world would not have been in my favour. That is the sad part.

I agree wholeheartedly. Part of my family is mixed race, and I simply can’t keep my mouth shut around people with archaic and ridiculous opinions concerning people of a different race. They pass on their small minded and vile views to their offspring, who deem it their given right to harass and victimise people. Shameful

I am a white woman and if I'd been in the queue I'd have found that very upsetting. I would have wanted to show some kind of solidarity I dont know quite how.

I have found myself in this kind of situation before and it doesn't always end well.

It's particularly upsetting that this is from the mouth of a child. children don't see colour or differences unless taught them from others behaviour.

I fear that you would have become the bad man in this scenario if you had spoken out to child or parent. It's sad a sad state of affairs.

Worked in the building trade for 40 years or so and the racism you encounter from apprentices to older blokes is horrendous.

Probably best to rise above it as you did, taking the morally superior higher ground.

I would have given you/ her a supportive smile and some sort of look that said "what the absolute fuck" in an attempt at making you feel better. While knowing it wouldn't at all. "

I'd have probably gone all 'White knight' Turned to the child and said in quite a loud voice "That's a very nasty thing to say". Waited for a parental reaction.

"An April's morning 2019, in West Yorkshire.

How would you take it further?

Was the kid shouting at you or the asian girl?

If I was there I probably wouldn't say anything as idiots like that would just kick off. They don't deserve a reaction.

Very difficult to say for sure, without being there at the time, but I like to think I’d have said the same as the above.

"Worked in the building trade for 40 years or so and the racism you encounter from apprentices to older blokes is horrendous.

Probably best to rise above it as you did, taking the morally superior higher ground."

So true! They buy the sun/daily mail or any of the garbage papers and sit in their vans giving out about 'foreigners' I spent 6 months on a site and it was so sad to hear the uneducated, backwards comments on almost a daily basis I just had to keep my mouth shut because I needed the money. I'd never give these sort of people any of my time or energy. Just a waste.

"Just out of curiosity OP, what shop was you in?

I don't see this question to be relevant. It was in England, a country I am proud to live in.

Would it change your view on the situation if you knew ?

It's a nationwide chain with more than one outlet in most major cities. I will never be using that one ever again.

Ah, I see - not Waitrose then.

As I thought..."

Again irrelevant.

In my lifetime some of the most hospitable people have been from lesser privileged backgrounds, both here and abroad.

If that's the point your trying to make ..

Would you want to go somewhere again where you felt completely humiliated because of the colour of your skin. What other reason did the kid have to shout ...

Getting closer in terms of Alphabetical order... Don't want to encourage a boycott of the chain. I like what they have to offer on the odd occasion

That's not the shop's fault though is it. I wouldn't stop going somewhere because of some rude kid and crap parent.

Unless I felt it was the type of local area that had that view, then no I wouldn't go back.

Found this pretty difficult to digest and process really! How Such an awful attitude could be taught and encouraged by “adults” to a child makes me feel really really sad!

I’m not sure what I’d have done had I been there if I’m honest, as I’m not particularly confrontational. I could imagine me just letting out a sarcastic “wow” accompanied by a look of “did those words really just come from your little darlings mind??” Actually gutted OP!

Thank you for the kind words. I understand that this was an isolated incident and the majority of this Great nation wants to keep that spirit by being inclusive and respectful of all communities. We welcome human life that has been torn by war or regimes that are oppressive, and allow them a fresh start. We need to keep this spirit alive in our kids.

This for me is Great Britain

"Was the parent with the child? I’d have knocked mine into the middle of next week!

Makes me so angry this shit does. "

You wouldn't because your child wouldn't do it in the first place.

If that was his mother with him then she condones that type of behaviour.

Others around them also.. Just uneducated fools.

"Absolutely appalling .

I would have asked him to justify it . Loud and clear I’d have said “ excuse me but why ? “ and embarrassed him and the twats that laughed thinking it was funny .

Despicable behaviour .

You will never ever embarrass or win a public shouting match with an 8 year old.

Never going to happen you'll just look like a cock

I disagree, but don't shout, just speak calm wise words....

To a shouting 8 yesr old?

Good luck with that dude

I own a nine year old, talking works..... "

You shouldn't compare your child with that whatever that was.

You are teaching your child nice things for years and that one had a completely opposite teaching system about life and values.

It won't change him or convince him that something like that is wrong.

By the looks of it others around thim would have just backed him up..

True. No way in a million years would either of mine say or do anything like that. In fact they wouldn’t even think it never mind say it. Very sad.

The Land that time forgot (Norfolk)

I don't really like children all that much so would have probably just said something more nasty back to him and hoped to upset him more than he upset you. Not big or clever but fuck it, make the little cunt feel shit too.

I think that you said/did the right thing in the circumstances.

I'm nearly fifty, mixed race, english/carribean and brought up in english/white culture. What you experienced and saw is nothing new in all my years but I would say I have only suffered a small percentage of racism and it is as mentioned from others, racism being taught. Doesn't matter what background a person is from, the area, to whether someone is racist or not.

I think I did the right thing too. My life seems a bit more normal today, it's taken a few days for a new layer of skin to appear ..

Common sense will prevail
