The geek in me is a feral beast, it wants to revel in the glory of the fandoms and I feel no shame in letting it.

This thread is for those of you who have seen the latest episode to 'geek out', chat theories, or compare thoughts.

Be warned folks, this will reveal plot points, so if you don't want to know, hit that back button now. For everyone else; get your geek on!

**here be spoilers**

Good move Sir - although don't think there are many spoilers as such to be had from the first episode - was very much about setting out the stall for the rest of the series and think it did it perfectly.

I also have money on how long it is before one of the theme parks has "Game Of Thrones - The Dragon Ride" after Dani and John's jaunt!!

The most interesting quandaries for me out of the first episode are:

- Will Bronn follow the money or stay loyal to his friends?

- How will Dani react to John's revelation?

- Will Sansa (and the rest of the north) come to accept Dani, or will her refusal ultimately cause an irreparable rift?

- Where the fuck are these thousands of new people that have arrived in Winterfell living while there? There were a handful of tents outside the walls but nothing to suggest the size of the influx

Sansa still fucking up everything i see.

On the point of Dragon riding its been brought up a few times about arrows etc hitting dani why has no one in her massive army made a harnes/saddle and some dragon riding armour?

Or do you think thats being saved for a set peixe later one

Those are some very valid questions! Especially the theme park ride, I'd pay to ride a dragon!

I thought the Bronn exchange will be the most telling in the coming weeks, it could be his defining moment and possibly seal Cerseis fate...

That may well be a bit point later in the series, the undead army aren't known for their archers though, just spears.

I would like to think that honour will win the day where Bronn is concerned and he will make the right choice, but suspect it won't be without him initially appearing to make the wrong one.

Some episodes will be longer than others apparently - this one was actually over an hour (they're normally about 50 mins when you take the ads out)

Half of them will be normal length (1hr)the others will be 1 1/2 hrs. That works out to 10 hours which is the regular season duration.

"Loved the opening scene call back to the first episode."

Yeah, I thought that too. Aside from the climbing reference, hadn't Arya lined up to see Robert Baratheon, Cersei et al arrive in Winterfell way back then?

Am concerned by the dragons not eating enough ... they're going to need their strength. Hope this doesn't foretell one or both proving weaker than they should be when it counts. Though one little thing that's annoyed me before now and it happened again is how neither Dany or Jon (or others in her entourage for that matter) have ever questionned Jon's ability to get up close to the dragons. And *everybody* in Westeros knows the Targaryens are dragon riders - it's the stuff of legend - so really, would neither be pretty amazed that Jon was even allowed to mount Rhaegal let alone pilot him?

Liked the Hound and Ayra's reunion - a grudging respect there underneath the sweary sparring.

And 'I've always had blue eyes' from Tormund

But get the opening titles ... will need to watch those again.

Yes! Also the scenes depicted on the rings were different too, from what I can tell its the capture and revealing of the walker that's led to this seasons events.

Ha ha 'walkers' ... a bit of Walking Dead crossover there! Surely you mean the *White* Walkers (to be pedantic) and/or their wights? Though I wonder if that's all we'll see of Last Hearth because having killed Lord Umber you can probably safely assume all the Umber folk were slaughtered before him ... as I think was indicated when Tormund and Beric were creeping about in the devastation - though it was very dark at that point and I was straining to see much. Anyway, at that point, I suspect the Night King etc had already marched on ... hence them saying they'd have to try to get ahead of them on horses.

In fact I wouldn't mind betting the next we'll see of Tormund, Beric and Ed will be at Winterfell next week. After all, every single journey in Series 7 seems to have taken place at warp speed compared to all previous series where they took like, forever. Thus setting the scene for a Tormund-Brienne reunion which should be amusing.

It's all a question of his reaction to that news. I can't see him turning despot, he didn't want the king in the North mantle! I think it's more how Sansa will take the news that he's not her brother after all.

I can see Dani "reacting" to the news when it comes out, whether it causes conflict or further consummates their love remains to be seen - as has been said though, they surely can't be oblivious to the fact the dragons seem to like him which is a sure sign he's Targaryen

True, Tyrion says it enough in this episode; "you have to earn the north's trust".

George RR Martyn said a long long time ago; "if you think it's going to have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention"

What makes you suggest that?

The Night King was created by the Children of the Forest thousands of years ago, whereas the so called Mad King (Dany's father) was killed by Jaime Lannister within living memory.

Game of Thrones: Here's Why We Think The Mad King is The Night King

whatsapp

(Disclaimer: Spoilers for Game of Thrones Season 8 ahead)

As soon as the Game of Thrones season 8 premiere was on air, a number of GoT theories started percolating in context to what all occurred in the first episode, titled Winterfell. And judging by the depth of analysis that many true GoT fans have put into this show so far, I have come up with my own theory that involves the Mad King. I believe that the Night King, the leader of White Walkers, is none other than the Mad King, the father of Daneryes Targaryen aka the queen of dragons. Here’s how:

Fact 1 – History

There is no history to the Night King. Where is he from? Why is he marching towards the South? What are his demands? In short, we don’t know where he has come from, and coincidentally we don’t know what happened to the Mad King after he died. All we know is that Jamie Lannister killed the Mad King and became the infamous Kingslayer, but what exactly happened to the Mad King’s body? Did they burn him? If they didn’t then there are all the possibilities in the world that the Mad King ends up being the ‘Night King’. Now the similarities between their names also ring a bell… hmm

I actually have a feeling that the battles with the White Walkers and Night King will be done and dusted before the end of the series and there will be two or three episodes to finish the series that focus on the whole question of Cersei vs the rest

I think they should gather all the Walkers into one place by holding a Rock Concert with all the dead artists who have passed away over the last few years. They could call it " Dead Aid", Barry Chuckle could be compare and then when they are all clapping along to Freddie belting out Radio Ga Ga. The living could attack them with Wildfire

....Rick Grimes is in said helicopter (which is after all the mode of transport he was using when last seen) and the closing scene is him jumping out and saying to John "I hear you have a walker problem you need help with"....fade to credits

"I think they should gather all the Walkers into one place by holding a Rock Concert with all the dead artists who have passed away over the last few years. They could call it " Dead Aid", Barry Chuckle could be compare and then when they are all clapping along to Freddie belting out Radio Ga Ga. The living could attack them with Wildfire "
Forgot to add while they are all burning, Prince walks on stage and belts out "Tonight were gonna Party like it's 1999"

It was amazing, Jaime's face as he saw Bran and the penny dropped, can't wait to see how that plays out.

The Night King has a history and predates the mad King by thousands of years. The mad King was killed in Kings Landing by a human, thousands of miles from the White walkers so there is no chance he was resurrected by them.

I think Dany won't be happy about Jon being Aegon Targaryan and their relationship will deteriorate. I think she's already pregnant though. Is it possible that Sam will kill her? He was devastated

I don't trust Bron to be honourable. I like him but he will go for the cash.

Bron is quite possibly my favourite character, he's definitely in the top three (with Tyrion & Dany), but I'm not convinced he'll stay loyal to Jamie or Tyrion. I'd like to think he would, but this is GoT, we don't get happy endings!!

Oh I know and if he took them both out with the crossbow it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest, disappoint me yes, but surprise no. BUT he's also got far greater history with both Jamie and Tyrion than Cersei and I think ultimately that will win out, although can see a scene where he has one or the other lined up in the sights of that crossbow and agonises over whether to pull the trigger, but ultimately doesn't.

They talk about the crypts being safe far too much in this episode and seeing the pre season trailer of arya running with blood on her in the crypts is making me think it's all going to kick off down there first.

A wonderfully heartwarming placeholder episode although not much happened lots did - loved the various gatherings of them spending time together "the night before" - the interplay between Tormund and Brienne makes me smile, laugh and hope it's not unrequited at the same time.

Thought they played the "reveal" to Dany perfectly and leaves us wondering how she'll react or even if we'll get to see how she does (as in will *both* Jon and Dany be with us at the end of next week's episode?).

The only thing I felt slightly uncomfortable with was the Arya/Gendry coming together - felt a little awkward to me, but that may be because we still tend to think of her as a girl and not a woman, or maybe that was her final right of passage into womanhood.

Maybe, it's rarely that simple though, is it?

I found Sansa and Dani's 'chat' very important. When Dani confessed her love for John you could see Sansa soften towards her. Perhaps there's hope there

Absolutely, we've literally watched her grow up. I'm glad they didn't do the gratuitous nude shot though.

I was trying to work out how long the passage of time across the series has been in westeros time and how old Arya actually is. By rights she should be in her late teens I think.

Have just found an excellent Game Of Thrones Wiki timeline that has Arya born in 287AC (After Conquest) and shows Series 8 as starting in 305AC which would place her at 18 (she apparently states in Series 1 that she is 11) - however it also states that for the TV series 2-3 years were added to most of the child characters (most notably the Stark children).

I guess it also depends how long a Westeros year is compared to one of ours.

I’m not one to take stuff like this seriously. However the Stark family really like to fuck up.

Ned and his honour.

Caitlin fucked everything.

Rob fucked everything up for a quick lay.

Jon goes beyond the Wall to get proof that White Walkers exist. Cersei fucks him over anyway so it was a futile journey anyway which lost a dragon giving them the means to bring the wall down. He’s now shut all the women and children in a crypt full of bodies that may have a habit of getting up from the dead.

And don’t get me started on ninja Arya.

Sansa should sit on the throne. She’s seems a bit more sensible.

Also I was thinking what does make GOT so damn popular?

Is it that every episode is like a small movie?

Or the production and the direction is second to none?

Or

The writing is superb?

Tbh it's all of the above and more.

I cannot think of a TV series where every character has been played so well, the acting has been brilliant from episode 1.

Lots of actor's who have been bit part player's over the years have risen to give career defining performances.

I think the casting director picked every character perfectly.

I haven't read the books but I can't see any flaws in the TV show characters.

I just hope that the final few episodes gives us the ending that we want.

No silly Hollywood style slow motion deaths and sentiment.

"So who's going to die and who's going to live??"

I think the joy of GoT is that we have no clue and there would be no surprises about *anyone* being killed off, including *any* of the main characters - they won't shy away from killing off Jon or Dany for example for the sake of a Hollywood ending.

I think there are a few likelies though:

Theon saving Sansa somehow with an honourable and selfless act

One, or more, of Jamie/Tormund/Brienne or even Pod as part of that little grouping

Sur Jorra saving Dany

Or any of a load of other probables that won't happen

"Also I was thinking what does make GOT so damn popular?

"

All of the above and a whole lot more - I confess that when it started it held no interest for me as I thought it was going to be dungeons and dragons and fantasy, which is just not my thing - but having been enticed in and subsequently hooked, I can see it's so much more than that - it has something for everyone - intrigue, action, adventure, mystery, fantasy, romance - and I think that is why it has such a broad appeal.

My theory for the end - by the seasons end Danerys will abandon the fight with the white walkers and let them kill Jon Snow. She’ll head south to take the throne from Cersei. She’ll succeed. But then she’ll die during childbirth and Jon’s heir will become the ruler. With Arya as his guardian.

I bet every major character dies except Gilly and Arya

What if Arya is pregnant, along with Dani and Sersei? The game continues with a Stark/Barrathian, a Targeryan and a Lannister...

I mean, ya expect arya to be different after everything, but that was a sharp as fuck U turn.

On a different note, I'm really enjoying the podcast Still Watching Game of Thrones by Vanity Fair.

They are taking 15 key episodes and interview someone involved in the episode - could be actor, director, writer, weapons master etc.

Fascinating.

I feel that as they have progressed beyond Martin’s plot lines some of the unpredictability which was a huge part of the shows appeal has reduced.

I have read that a big motive of his was wanting to break away from the rigid expectations that as a scriptwriter on many shows he had been bound by - editors basically requiring themes and plot developments which fitted what they regarded as meeting public preferences and tastes.

Gradually over the last couple of series this to me has waned , with far more predictability now, bringing what was once a free thinking and original show far more in line with what is fashionable , even compulsory(!) in modern drama and soap opera.

Thus in ,I think, every strand of the various plots, we see the inevitable strong, intelligent and powerful female outwitting or in some way demonstrating superiority over some weaker or less perceptive male.

Is there an exception? I can’t think of one. John Snow seems to be a sort of metrosexual version of the dead Stark men who were originally the symbols of the noble warrior. All the magnificent , devilish and evil men have been eliminated - Euron Greyjoy a feeble echo about to be destroyed no doubt by Myra or possibly Cersei . Jamie has been transformed into a feeble wimp , dividing his time between deferring to Danerys or Brianne. Tyrion is now mostly a tedious bore , Varys has become embarrassingly pointless ...and so on.

So while we can still hope for some of those startlingly unexpected developments which made the series gripping before the lavish expenditure added the great spectacular scenes, I fear that the originality has declined along with Martin’s control.

Episode 2 is taking a bit of stick for being boring, too much talking. If all people want is action I think they've missed the point, GOT is as much about the characters as anything else.

Did people expect it to just be a death fest from episode one? Why would you even want that? This felt like a final farewell to some of the characters we've all grown to love, some of whom we know will be killed off, and I absolutely loved it.

Are you sticking with just 5?

I think that (as is so often the case), for the most likely impending icy touch of Martin's pen, you should look to those happiest, first.

Ser Brienne,

Theon,

Gendry,

Ser Davos,

Tormund.

There are a few outside bets in there too but I've ordered them in level of my considered likelihood.

However it shakes out, next week is going to see a remarkable thinning of the herd.

You need these reflective build up episodes I agree, and it was probably in the writers minds to give us a round up of the lesser as well as major characters so that the impact of their loss next week will be greater. My problem is more that I care a lot less about most of them than I did several series ago! Fascinating characters like Tyrion, the Hound, Jamie , Varys, Arya, Sansa and others have somehow dwindled into familiar types we see in drama after drama.

Swap Ed Tollet for Tormund and we have a match

Although I'm now not so sure about Gendry, his bloodline has something to add to the remaining plot I think (although that may also require Ser Davos to survive).

I actually said earlier when discussing it the only surprise for me will be if Theon makes it out alive

Am I the only one who was a bit creeped out when Arya got naked? I mean we have seen her grow up from a small child and now in the last series they have made her do a sex scene? I just didn't see the need for it

There's another thread where that is discussed in more detail and I was a little uncomfortable with it at first sight, but on reflection she is now an adult - the circumstances were such that it probably would be something she would do on possibly her last night alive - it wasn't particularly gratuitous and could just be seem as her final rite of passage into womanhood.

Yes because we have watched her grow up it was a bit like thinking about your own kids having sex but in the context of the episode I think it made sense.

And let's face it we've not blinked when she has killed countless times as a child so should we really be shocked that she has sex as an adult?

Theon - went back to Winterfell to atone and die

Grey worm - made a plan for the future, bad mistake

Sansa - has finally become likeable

Ed Tollett - so much emphasis on him saying his vows

Both remaining Mormonts They resolve their family conflict as they are turned into Whitewalkers.
