Transvestite - insult or just a word?

So I've just been told by a transitioning person that the term transvestite is not used by any person in the 'community'and to do so is offensive.

Do people agree with this or am I right in thinking that many people who are TV or TS use it still?

Calling a transgender woman a transvestite is an insult, calling a transvestite a transvestite isn't.

TV, guy who likes dressing as a woman for whatever reason (or vice versa): transgender, woman born with male physical characteristics or man born with female characteristics.

Just to clarify, I'm only referring to the word transvestite, cheers.

Eddie Izzard is not transitioning.

Eddie Izzard is a man who identifies as male who wears women's clothes.

A trans individual doesn't "dress up" to see if they like it.

I wouldn't find it insulting. Point is OP. It's a delicate issue and vest to tread lightly. I know Trannies who call themselves just that. Transvestite sounds a bit colder I think, so it's not true. People in the "Community" Label themselves that way. Best not to label sold one else though. Just incase they don't like it.

I think its only insulting being if after being told someone finds it insulting you continue to use it inappropriately.

None of us can possibly know all the correct terms used in various communities or sections of society and a little understanding both ways wouldn't go amiss.

Now and again it’s plain to see why certain people do certain things in life . This is possibly the most sensible answer I’ve seen in all my year since on fab forums

I'm a transvestite.

I usually use TGirl as shorthand but transvestite is fine as it's what I am.

I dress for pleasure, it's my kink.

I'm very different to Trans people, best not to conflate us.

Thanks for all the replies.

It's good to be able to confirm that the individual who told me that Zero people use the word transvestite was wrong. I should point out that the word wasn't said to anyone, it wasn't used to cause offensive and as far as I am concerned it's up to the individual to decide if they want to refer to themselves as a transvestite or not.

Thanks peeps

Does TGirl apply to all TV, TS etc.... hard to know how not to offend.

Y'know, I've no idea!

Personally I'd say yes, as it's a broad term.

You need to attend all the meetings where this sort of thing is discussed.

Personally, I wouldn't like it, but then I'm actually a post op trans woman. The terms around the trans community are highly subjective. I guess it's always best to ask

I personally, find the term clinical and archaic. This term has in the past been used to define an individual who derives sexual pleasure from wearing the clothing of the opposite gender. For those of us who feel we were assigned the wrong gender at birth and derive no sexual pleasure from presenting as the gender they identy with , this could be insulting. However, the meaning of any such label is personal to the individual. we must also accept that it's almost impossible for someone who has not met you to know your preference, so we mustn't take labels too seriously. I like the term Tgirl as I think that's a polite term that covers a wide spectrum. my preferred label is "Jemma" as I'm just me and don't feel defined by a label xx

May I ask why you’ve not asked fab to list you as female now?

New Ferry, wirral in stockings and sussies

I think most people are to precious about labels, if its meant as an insult its an insult if its not then its not, its all about the context not the word.

If I were called a transvestite I would correct them but not be particularly offended, unless there was a clear intention to offend.

The word ‘tranny’ really grips me for some reason though. Mind you the dictionary definition of tranny agrees that it’s offensive so perhaps that explains it.

To be honest I've thought of doing that, I guess it mqy be easier, but it could just leave me open to a bunch of abuse later, or people will just know. Hope that makes sense!

I think putting TV and TS together is confusing. Post OP to me is a man / woman.

Just be clear on your profile.

Oh dear!

The terminology of gender dysphoria is a snake-pit.

No word is offensive when used in the appropriate context.

Some people describe themselves as transvestites and are happy for others to use the description. The inference is a male who enjoys the lifestyle of cross-dressing.

It's not appropriate, however, for someone who, at heart, sees themselves as female and is striving, by whatever means, to match their physical self with their emotional and mental sense of identity.

Transgender is a catch-all term. You're on safe ground using it.

Language changes. At one time 'colored' was an acceptable term. Even if you don't use a term maliciously keep in mind that trans people might have got to the end of their tether with hearing it from people who are malicious so it's best to try and be correct in the first place when you can be.

And it bugs me that fab have a TV/TS category, as if the two things were the same.
