Interesting question

You can talk to the air around you can’t you ? Not necessarily god and things become better ??

I don’t know if there’s a god - scientifically there isn’t , however , I believe there’s something but as to what that is , I’ve no idea. The universe is huge - maybe the universe answers our prayers

"no, have you OP?"

Nothing major and more likely to be coincidence. I’ve had more unanswered ones.

I was interested to see if anyone genuinely thought they did.

I've found myself in a few awkward situations and only then have I ever thought or said "please help me get out of this one God". I said it as a reflex because during my childhood I went to Sunday school and was taught that God existed and would answer our prayers.

I got out of those situations due to blind luck or my own ingenuity, not due to some mystical creator in the sky. I don't believe in God, I believe in science. I will agree with Flora though in that I do believe there is something else out there because we can't be the center of the universe, what that is though who knows?!

Not religious at all.

If a so called God answers some personal wants and ignores the vast amount of injustices in the world, he's nothing to be thankful for.

My grandad was not religious, he was in WW2 in the navy on the landing craft. He told me, they all prayed when they thought they were possibly about to die.

If it brings someone comfort, I think it’s a good thing.

Having seen someone given the last rites, I saw the peace it brought them. It was very moving.

I was actually going to make a forum post about this

I’ve prayed often. I prayed when things at home got shitty. Prayed when awful things happened to me.

I’m unsure if my prayers were answered. The shitty things when I was younger stopped happening, things at home got better. But it took years.

Whenever I got pregnant I prayed, a lot. So far, it’s working.

I pray for other people.

But I feel like a hypocrite

Just where I need to be.

I felt a bit of a hypocrite as I did pray to whoever could hear me. I'm a non believer in God. Someone very close to me was seriously ill and I used every means to me to try and help. Medically people were trying to save them, I thought a bit of spiritual help wouldn't hurt. Whether it helped I don't know but they survived and had no lasting complications which the medical team were amazed at.

I don't pray to God. I do try to focus my thoughts on making something happen which leads me to do something about it I a practical way. I try not to leave it up to someone else to sort things out for me though.

Prayer clearly doesn't work, I suspect millions of people in dreadful situations in war zones pray daily. If they're not being listened to I doubt individuals are.

My son was very poorly when he was little and had to undergo a long brain operation when he was 4. I remember praying that day that he would survive and be better, it did happen but took a lot of years for us to see the benefits. So yes my prayers were answered but not sure it was praying or medical intervention that gave me my son back x

I'll go it was the dedication skill and learning of medicine that saved x

I stopped praying when I started to understand atheism around age 11 12

Generally I dislike the concept , it's mainly self serving although possibly innate

I would declare this logic that IF a God existed AND praying had a bona fifa effect THEN tuberculosis nor malaria nor cancer nor vast numbers of violent needles tragic deaths(the list is vast isn't it) would still be plaguing humanity

It is fairly certain no sentient creator exists and even more certain, just wanting something to happen will no causation be !

Personally I think praying is possibly innate in the respect I think saying mantra is innate and possibly, probably beneficial. Praying I'd suggest is a version of mantra and regardless of if the words are heaven sent or earthly pragmatism the effect I'd say evidently is calming , soothing reassuring and focusing the mind

I come to near death often and I have mantras to give psychological fortitude at no point does me being personality saved by a creator manifest

I'd go further

IF a sentient creator existed ,truthfully and absolutely I would trade my prayer of self salvation for the eradication of any one of the vile plagues that torture our world let's start with malaria

Prayers maybe totally ineffective however their calming or positive benefits should not be underestimated

That said when one hears a God being thanked when a vast team of exceptional humans , firemen, ambulance, doctors, chemists, engineers, again the list is vast , I then feel the perspective is distorted and or lost and the religion or belief is not a positive influence

I wonder if the fire at Notre dame can be deemed as more evidence that a God does not exist and prayers are futile

Not in and of itself no, I don't think so. Shit happens, it's always happened that's why god is necessary, to explain that our lack of faith in him/her/it is the cause of said shit.

When I was a criminal defence lawyer and worked fucking hard to get somebody off, they would often thank Jesus or God.

Charming.

and no i dont think prayers get answered. If there was a god why would he answer an individuals prayers when theres a whole world suffering attrocaties. Why would he chose our prayers to answer over the others

"and no i dont think prayers get answered. If there was a god why would he answer an individuals prayers when theres a whole world suffering attrocaties. Why would he chose our prayers to answer over the others"

The usual answers to that are

God only sends hardship to those strong enough to deal with it

All prayers are answered just not in the way you want them to be

God has a plan for you

God moves in mysterious ways

You don't have enough faith

You must trust in God that he knows what's best for you

Its your fault your prayer wasn't answered because god gave us free will

Which are all unconvincing rationalisations.

The most obvious answer that fits all the evidence is that a god who answers prayers doesn't exist.

i think people that believe they are chosen above others have a touch of narsistic tendencies. I have a friend who prayers regularly to his gods and he explained to me why he did it and it was really interesting. He prayed for inner strength and to make him a better person and it helped him with everyday life

My personal beliefs are that any form of meditation (which for me is what prayers are) is communication with your inner self. Therefore if I pray for something I'd better darn well get up off my sorry backside and try to make it happen.

I kind of agree with that, but obviously for most people prayer involves communication with an external being with a power to act independently of us.
