This came up today in the course I am taking. We were told the dictionary definition is:
* Having great skill or experience
* Engaged in activity as a livelihood
* Receiving pay for performance
I have no idea which dictionary the definition comes from and no doubt other dictionaries are available
btw when I finish my course Professional will be part of the title  |

A profession is a job which normally requires a degree or extended study.
something like accountancy, doctor or lawyer. There is normally a Chartered Institute or some such society regulating the qualifications, so the person can put letters after their name, to show that they are a qualified member.
But what does it mean on a profile?

A professional is a person who is paid to undertake a specialised set of tasks and to complete them for a fee. The traditional professions were doctors, lawyers, clergymen, and commissioned military officers. Its thought provoking but professional is a terminology to describe someone who has a profession and it indicates employment. If your not you can't be part of a profession. You could be an ex professional I suppose. |

if we do see the word profesional on a profile we body swerve as this is a swingers site and profesional to us means they think they are better than us and yes we both have paid jobs and in this climate we are lucky but we are just normal people xx |

to me its a vocation you can only do after taking on extra training.
i insist im a professional driver, HGV as opposed a taxi driver (runs for cover) lol |

Of course it is.
Its thought provoking but professional is a terminology to describe someone who has a profession and it indicates employment. If your not you can't be part of a profession. You could be an ex professional I suppose. "
I guess it depends on whether you _iew unemployed as a negativce description or just someone without a job. A good friend of mine got made redundant last year and got a good payoff, with no ties she has elected to take a break from working but is still a qualified accountant. Similarly, does a woman stop being a professional and become a fulltime mom if she stops working for a time after having kids?

In its true form it means anyone who is engaged in a profession...you dont need qualifications to call yourself or be considered a professional..
e.g Professional footballer, professional decorator etc..
Some people seem to push it to the max though..and im sure some on here describe themselves as 'proffesionals'
 simply because they are either delusional or feel the need to put themselves 'above' others.. |

So, we know what a professional is (in a fashion), who is going to own up to being a lowly underestimated technician on their profile then then?

I'm sorry but I disagree with that. I'm a professional but I dont go through life thinking i'm better than anyone.
And personally speaking anyone who does have that mentality is an idiot in my eyes.
I have the term 'professional' in my profile just because its a preference some people look for when they're browsing.

Agree, in the world of swinging why is "professional" relevant. Unless it's a polite, if not cowardly way of stating we don't want mingers lol, or people of sub human intelligence.
Our profile has become a parody to profiles we have seen on swinger sites over the years. |

Electricians are skilled workers and so are bricklayers. Labourers are unskilled workers. |

I do find the inverted snobbery from those with inferiority complexes on this thread amusing.
If I see a profile stating "very good looking" ...I leave them to it; if I see "I spend eight hours a day, seven days a week in the gym" ...I leave them to it. If I see professional I'll stop and read...I giggle if I see "proffessional, pwofesional" etc...but I leave them to it.
The "very good looking uber gym bunnies" on this site wouldn't be for me and their profiles are written to attract kindred spirits.
Therefore, if you feel you don't meet the "professional" requirement see it as a "not for you" and move on. |

Without a good labourer a brickie wouldn't and couldn't perform to his professional best. |

We have now bought a Ford capri (crappy), wigs and some empty cardboard boxes to drive through.
We are C15 and enjoy jumping over our bonnets and I have dyed my chest hair black with curly extensions.
Mrs Scoots now has a rug from belly button to knee caps which she practices the art of topiary on.
We are now profeshone......prophes......no i mean prowfesio.......we are now very important |
