USA considers $11 billion trade tariffs on eu goods

Ao the usa is considering imposing 11 billion in tariffs on mainly traditional EU goods (wine cheese aerospace parts etc) however they are cureently refraining from targeting the automotive sector.

Could this combined with the fact the eurozones manufacturing index has fallen to an 80 month low this year and the potential upcoming brexit force the eurozone into recession again?

Given the southern states situation if that happens they may be forced to pull out of the Euro to save themselves. It seems like this will be a very testing year fir the euro currency

To be fair they’re probably going to be allowed to impose them in response to our support for airbus, so it’s a hit we’ll have to take

If they tried other tariffs though we’d just respond and hit some marginal states like we did last time, I suspect trump won’t want that in the run up to an election so not much will happe

The other tariffs they out on are still in place our response did nothing to change that.

The eu is having a desperate meeting in the next few months to try and pursaude trump not to tarrifs and effectivly destroy the european automotive industry as theyre the biggest market for the german cars.

it wont work.... because trump is trying to start the same trade war he did with the chinese...

the issue is they the EU can slap tarriffs back... and pin point them at places trump would need to win re-election... so if you are fans of the following, i apologise in advance...

tarriffs on bourbon and whiskey (for example jack daniels and jim beam (kentucky and tennessee)...

harley davidson bikes (wisconsin, michigan and pennsylvania)

Peanut butter (georgia and south carolina)

and then we have american brands such as levi jeans.....

this is an interesting conversaion.... if way too "political wonk-ish" for the fluff in the forum.... in fact i wouldn't be surprised if several people complained (because it mind make brains think a bit)

But the eu already has a 10% tarrif on the usa cars the usa only imposes a 2.5% tarrif on the eu.

It would be very hard to spin tbe usa simply matching EU tarrifs say as trump being unfair and warranting punishment

the US always complain about the 10% car tariff.... but do you ever wonder why you don't see the suburban "truck" culture here.... its because the US slap a 25% tariff on european made ones... so they don't bother trying!

Sorry csn you re write that?

We dont have suburban truck culture in the uk because america puts a 25% tarrif on eu made trucks?

We so seem to have a massive suv culture here but trucks no, because you just wouldnt be able to drive them effectivly in most of the uk given the size of our roads

it basically to protect home markets.... so the 10% tarriff on cars is high enough to deter us manufacturers from importing cars from the US here.... and high enough that only the very high end european cars are imported to the US, all the low end European branded cars are make in plants in the US,Canada and Mexico taking advantage of NAFTA (BMW is Spartansburg, South Carolina,...Toyota in Alabama ect....)

the us slapped a 25% tarriff on SUV/Trucks to protect the likes of Ford and GM

the reason for the US threatening the tariff thing yet again if they are super annoyed that the EU won't allow in a lot of their agriculture produce in (food standards and animal welfare rules) thats the biggest reason why trump wants brexit... he sees it as a way to weaken the EU, and carve out another market when they may be able to get their stuff in...
