Despite a clear chest X-ray results and no real medical reasons , I have been to A&E twice in recent weeks convinced I was dying , because of really bad palpitations. It was so bad the other day they made me jump in the air . Even after months of blood tests , ecgs , and tests , nobody can find anything wrong . I'm at my wits end now . So I was wondering if anyone else has suffered with this ?? . Any advice would be appreciated x |

Yes I have. I went to the docs and they gave me an ECG straight away I was crapping myself! All wired up to some machine. Turns out it was anxiety and they gave me propranolol which apparently slows down the heartbeat. |

Yes I get them regularly, not that bad that I go to hospital but they’re still scary. It’s part of my anxiety and I’m on meds to help. Has your doctor considered that it could be that x |

I had similar a few years ago and it was also put down to anxiety which I laughed at as I don’t really stress or worry myself but the doc told me it’s my body that is stressed and it’s a way of telling me to stop being a cunt and rest and eat properly. It’s worked |

Yeah I think this was my problem. I don’t really relax. I’m always 100 miles an hour |

ECG is a snapshot of the electrical activity of the time of pressing the button. Have you had continuous 48hr holter monitoring? That's more likely to pick up any arrhythmias |

"Used to get them, cut down my caffeine consumption, now I don't get them any more.
Anxiety can also be a cause. "
I had to cut down on caffeine too which worked. |

"Have you had a thyroid function test?
Otherwise I suspect panic attacks or anxiety (I'm not medically trained so don't take my word for it). Has anyone suggested those as possible causes?"
This. And yes propranolol will help.
Probably need an echo too.
history of anxiety , depression! |

Yes you can request this. Any lightheadedness, breathlessness? |

My friend had a similar problem
Turns out a change of lifestyle can cause it too.
She’s been losing weight, drinking lots of diet Vimto, no Vimto = no palpitations
I doubt you have that particular issue, but it shows that it doesn’t have to be anything too serious, it’s just not always easy to find the cause and quite distressing until you do
Hope you find your cause soon OP |

Caffeine can do that to me, plus I have anxiety.
There's a great breathing technique I do, using nostrils, that sorts me out very quickly.
Keep calm, you'll be fine, but have a think about what may be causing anxiety or look at what you're eating.
Also, do you get excess stomach acid? |

"Thankyou all for your suggestions . I haven't looked into Anxiety , but then I dont feel stressed particularly so God knows . I'm stumped , but I will look into it "
Ok so not anxiety but when you get rapid heartbeats it can feel very odd indeed, heart in mouth, adrenaline rush etc.
I get heart races from time to time but once I cut out most caffeine from my diet and reduced sugar intake it improved.
I got advice from a friend to meditate once or twice a day for 20 minutes, the subject of meditation is not hugely important but sitting supported, warm and comfortable for twenty mins just focusing on my breathing and feeling calm was the BEST ADVICE EVER, see how it's all in caps?
If you do all that and it still happens then it's likely a mechanical and signal issue and I'd suggest pestering your doc again.

When my acid is high my anxiety gets worse.
I try to avoid foods that will increase my reflux and acid stomach.

I switched to decaf tea and now have caffeine sweats or rushes when I drink normal tea. I've recently switched to half spoon sugar but I'm not sure how it's affecting me yet.
If I have sugar before bed I can't sleep and my heart rate increases. |

I’ve been in a&e for the same thing, my blood pressure and pulse were very low though. They put it down to anxiety or thyroid, got to get to my gp for that test now. Been a very scary few day so I can definitely sympathise |

Is there anything that you do/notice before you get the palpitations? Anything particular you maybe eat or drink before it all starts?
Caffeine usually plays a big part usually and also as mentioned above, anxiety. But, you need to see if there is a common trend before it comes on.
It’s all good doing ECGs and so forth, but most of the times it’s done after everything has passed.
These palpitations, are they isolated or do you also get tingling sensations in your arms and legs?
...and no, not tingling in that sense.

Do you get out of bed really quickly?

I've been suffering palpitations for almost 20 years now and went through all the panic and anxiety that they bring.
Been to doctors, had ECGs, blood tests, 24 hour monitor and an ultrasound on my heart.
Despite being assured there's nothing to worry about it can be hard at times when you get that bump.
Through loads of research I have come to learn that apparently the majority of the population get many palpitations or skipped beats a day but they just don't notice them.
They are very common and rarely a cause for concern.
I've read that unless you have structural damage to your heart, then they are no more significant than hiccups.
When you think about what hiccups are, they're a minor abnormality in your breathing rhythm that causes no harm whatsoever. A palpitation is basically the same, a minor abnormality in your heart rhythm that causes no harm.
I still get a few a day but have found that taking magnesium supplements has help reduce the frequency big time.
I've come to accept that they will be part of my life and most of the time I'm good with them but occasionally I get that one that shakes me.
Hope this helps.
