So are you saying that your blacksmith has offered, or been asked to do the olympic team horses for free? And which ones? Just British Team, just one event, which??

O o O oo

I would have thought the teams would be taking their own farrier.

The money they are charging for the tickets is unbelievable, way out of reach for lots of people who may be wanting to go...so you would think they would not be asking for so many volunteers and pay people.

They get to write 'Farrier to the Olympic Team' on their stationery and bump their prices.

"DO the competitors pay you? Just curious x"

.only the normal going rate for what we would do here.... so no on call fee 1 shoe on being £15 its because of the registration rules in this country a farrier coming here to work for an Olympic team has to be registered like us and also prove competence to get on the registrar too

Thanks for answering- appreciate it. Out of interest, do the EU farriers have automatic registration, or do their governing bodies have to be validated/approved by UK?

no all have to pass a trade test to get on the register here...Worshipfully company of farriers and farriers registration council over see the list and anyone wanting to trim a hoof for the application of a shoe has to be registered.except highlands and islands of Scotland but that loop hole is being closed this year.UK is the only country with such strict regulations hence the Olympics problem

Didn't know rest of Europe/world was so far behind. Or maybe politics involved. Highlands and Islands a difficult one- how do you make a living with clients so spaced apart. Vets have same problem there.

we have had a farriers registration system here since 1975 when farriers registration act came into being because the standard of farriery here was slipping so bad. now an apprentice has to do 4 yrs and tests along the way at college, the exams at the end 2 1/2 hour practical, 40 oral (behave lol) and 4 hour written and you have to pass all 3 to qualify and only get 2 chances to pass!!! oh and also submit a specimen board of 20 different shoes too

tbf europe is a long way behind the uk on a lot of professional regulations, so much so that when they think up ones to get thier own house in order, they also shank it over here and ruin what was already a decent industry (not neccesarily farriers, but other industries also that are being strangled by domestic AND european regulation, or rather over regulation)
