Should Viagra be researched for...

Period pain? Since periods are being discussed today...
I heard a throwaway on the radio that when Viagra was being developed as a heart medication two discoveries were made:
1) It relieved all period pain
and
2) It worked for erectile dysfunction.
The developers had to make a decision which of the two they would test further and chose ED. Now that they have made their money back on ED should they go back to the research and test for period pain?

It increases blood flow. It doesn't affect libido but there have been mixed results on women, as I understand it.

The choice belonged to the CEO of a pharma multinational. Like many such companies the CEO was a male. He may have had a vested interest in this choice. |

Many drugs end up being used for something that they weren't originally intended for and the reason is almost always what is most profitable. Warfarin was developed as a rat poison, but is now used exclusively as a blood thinning agent. aspirin was developed as a pain-killer, but is now mostly used in small regular doses to prevent clotting. As it stands, sildenafil is the highest profit-making legal drug ever produced. |

Men on the decision panel, from what I can see. A greater chance of profit as men would pay for this as a 'just in case' as well as for need.

The licence is only ED and ‘where it may assist with patients with heart problems where it can be justified’ ... it would have to go back to clinical trial as treatment for any other therapeutic areas. Pfizer won’t do that, there isn’t enough money in it for them |

If it's true about it relieving period pain then *yes* they should put their profits into that research. I won't hold my breath though.
