I'm not talking about the odd bit of pretending they're single or they own a yacht or even their name's Duval and not Trotter but I'm talking about the John Darwins of cyber world; those that come up with the most elaborate of stories so complex that a certain amount of admiration** has to be cast their way.
A few years ago on a sister site to this, or at least I think it was/is,there was a regular poster who conned everyone into making people believe he'd got a terminal illness. He went all the way with it, right through to posting his last heart rendering messages. Some members were (understandably) upset that this awful disease had taken such a popular poster.
Some time later suspicions began to grow regarding a certain other poster and sure enough, he was eventually outed as being the dead guy. Well, there are no emojis in existence which would depict just what disgusting depths that person has sunk to. It doesn't need saying, it was a decrepit thing to do. It goes to show though, until you've felt their pulse, take nothing for granted.
In the hope that some of you may have some stories of a more light-hearted nature, what other elaborate ruses have you been witness to?
** I have a little bit of admiration for certain aspects of the Darwin story, none for the dead guy on the internet one. |

There and to the left a bit |
20 years or so ago at the dawning of the Internet age I used to inhabit a site where one of the regular and popular attendees was Ally - now Ally was funny, had lovely pics and always came across as genuine and heartfelt - we used to chat quite a lot and she lived not far away, and worked in London the same as me, to the point that I invited her to my birthday drinks one year - she never showed up, but said she'd got as far as the club, had spotted me across the room laughing and joking with my mates and got an attack of the nerves, so left, which was understandable in that context.
Fast forward another few months and an opportunity arose for us to meet and after a little arm twisting she agreed to do so about a week later - after a couple of days I received an email "confession" that Ally was actually John!!
Should have seen it coming I guess but like I said this was in the early days of the net when catfishing and ghosting had not been invented!! |

Wait so the guy who commits fraud and even made close friends and family think he was dead you have some admiration for... but a major issue with the guy who lied to strangers on the internet is a complete write off |
