Hi
I (Marty) am training for a triathlon, everything going great except the running.
Keep having problems with my left knee, have tried strength training to build up the muscles around my knee but every time i get back to running more than a mile it starts to play up again.
Meant to be running 6 miles at the moment can't manage 1 or 2 miles without my knee playing up.
Had my gait checked using proper running trainers. Brooks ghost as i have a neutral gait and land on my toes.
The swimming and biking are easy so it's not fitness related.
I have seen runners posting on the forums so thought i'd seek their advice as it's starting to piss me off.
I am seeing my doctor today hopefully he can shed some light on things.
Any help or advice would be more than welcome |

If it hurts, it's your body's way of warning you. Heed it. |

However truth be told it could be the impact of the running on your joints, I cant road run anymore because of it but have you tried to run on softer ground? |

I know you've had your hair check and you have the right shoes but sometimes just sipping out the built-in insoles and replacing them with specised running ones can make a massive difference.
Ideally you should lay-off it but, I know that's the last thing you want to do. Deep massage before and after a run can help as can heating (heat gel) it up prior to running and cooling (ice water/bag of frozen peas...) it post run. |

Thanks for the advice
Not heard about insoles, went to a proper running shop who had me a on a treadmill to video my gait then went through 6 or 7 pairs of trainers to find out which ones felt and looked best.
Will have to look into the insoles.
Not running outside yet it's all on a treadmill so less impact god only knows what it will be like on a road
Meant to be running at least 3 of the 6 miles on tarmac and 3 or so on sand.
Will try the heat gel and ice after as well
Hopefully nothing to serious will see what the doc says in a little while.
Maybe just some physio needed, was hoping to try a super sprint in June (very short just 600m swim, 12 miles on the bike and 1.5 miles run)
Not sure my knees up to even that short distance |

I find treadmills are greater impact (maybe thats just me) also, if your outside, when the pain starts you can always find some some ground (verge, track, playing field) to run on to lessen the impact for a short while to give your knee a rest. |

"I'm not really a runner, and this may be obvious, but have you seen a physio? "
This
Or at the very least work on stretching and flexibility. A couple of years ago I had real problems with my left knee, which was linked to my ITB and hip flexors. It was easily fixed and it's not troubled me sInce.
Also even though you say it's not fitness don't assume that the cycling and swimming fitness transfers across. You are using the muscles in a very different way. While you probably don't need to do c25k a run walk training plan over the first few weeks will help.

Thanks for all your advice
Seeing a physio on Monday after seeing my doctor.
Hopefully like some of you have said soon get it sorted.
My training plan did start with walk run just every time i try to run any kind of distance 1-2 miles (which i know isn't a lot) it plays up.
Nice to get so many positive replies always good to know these things can be fixed and hear from people with real experience.
Thanks |

Had similar issues with knees and hip when I was younger. Eventually they found Stress fractures, banned my from any running for 6 months. So my advice is rest the running, dial up the bike and swimming. And see what your Dr/physio come back with. You keep running through pain regularly, could end up struggling to walk very very quickly. |

I started running last year and had similar problems but none when cycling or swimming . Have you tried knee compression sleeves, I got mine from Amazon for £15. They quickly sorted out my runners knee and I was able to stop using them after a couple of months with no further issues.

As per others, knees are complex and no two experiences the same so heeding what worked for others could be an expensive waste of time. The physio is the best start point.
If you maintain good fitness swim and bike you’ll easily do the run for a super sprint once your diagnosis is sorted and running allowed. In the meantime stop running. Try fast walking if you feel you need to do something but it’s the impact of running that is causing the trouble.
Good luck with the physio.
Knee caused me to stop training for half Ironman. I completed the same event a year later after surgery and I’m currently running further and faster than I ever have. |

Thanks for all your advise
Been to the physio today not great news
Either ACL, Cartilage or my knee cap which moves side to side way way to much.
The simple treatmeant is cardio, strength training and balance.
Well already fine on two out of three so hoping balance will help make a difference.
Need an MRI to evaluate what exactly is wrong so it looks like no running for me this year.
Might need surgery if balance training doesn't work or the MRI shows up more serious problems.
Hopefully find someone willing to do the run section for me or find an aqua bike event.
At least i can still swim and bike

I would try looking at changing to heel striking. Landing on the toes can push back up through the shin and put quite a bit of impact pressure on the knee. If you try something like the mizuno wave running shoe, land on the heel and roll through the foot, the wave technology is great for transferring the impact.

That's how I run, great technique for roads - smashed the hall out of the heels on my fun shows though - used to change my shoes every 3 months when I was competing.
Sorry to hear about your diagnosis OP. Hope the MRI doesn't reveal any thing bad - come back next year stronger and faster. |

Possibly not what you need to hear but not everyone is a runner.
I know LOADS of people that can't run due to knee/back/ankle problems.
Could you stick to the lower impact stuff? I mean the tour de France guys are unbelievable!
Either way, good luck buddy |

Seems the damage was done when i was younger used to speed skate way to much and played demolition derby (think roller ball) on a concrete floor.
At the time didn't think anything of it has come back to haunt me.
Don't think it's a question of giving up running just need to sort out the problem.
Besides i'm a obstinate git if i want to do something i find a way
Hence i guess it's why i like triathlon lot easier just to give up but the rewards of pushing yourself through when you feel at your worst are great. |
