Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

There was a programme on BBC1 on Monday night looking at teenage brides - under 18s.

Girls forced to marry because they have become pregnant, in one case regardless of how, because of their parents' Christian beliefs.

What it made me think about is our (UK) laws allowing 16 year olds to marry. They can't vote. For all safeguarding purposes they are still children. They are the legal age for sex.

Should we raise the age for marriage?

I was having this discussion with a colleague the other day.

I think it is absurd that the legal age of marrying is 16 and yes you have to have parental consent but that surely is the issue regarding forced marriage.

The only issue is if the legal age of marrying is raised to 18 the legal age of consent would have to rise to 18. I don't have a problem with this however that is why I don't think it will ever happen.

Only one of those featured (small numbers, as is the way with telly) married someone her own age. The other cases were seen as ways of not being prosecuted for statutory r**e and paedophilia. The young women may well have waited but were not given a choice.

I believe we should raise the age for sex.

I thought that programme was about forcing girls to marry the men who got them pregnant through statutory ra*e? Therefore allowing those men to escape criminal charges

It used to be far more common in years gone by. My mum was 17 when she got married and i know a lot of her generation did. When i lived in Leicester i lived in an asian community and a lot got married young. But no. You can have sex at 16 but i might be wrong but dont you need parental consent at 16-18

Yes you do but again that's the issue because it's usually the parents forcing or coercing the marriage. That's why it should be 18 but then the legal age of consent will also have to rise to 18.

It's such a tricky area. Consent and agency can be contested for under 18s for some things (e.g. deciding to follow a religion that could be considered harmful to you; entering a contract; getting a tattoo).

That was the premise of the programme but our laws would permit the same if the parent consented to their 16 year old marrying.

I found it interesting that the language of forced marriage was not used and wondered how much that was to do it with it being white Christians in America.

I’m not sure you’d get two 17 year olds to wait another year to have sex. Perhaps between 16 & 18, they can’t have sex with someone over, say, 20 with the older person facing the possibility of prosecution.

Creating the same crime of statutory r**e as exists in the US then?

Thing is girls mature quicker than boys a 16 year old girl can blossom while a 16 year old boy is still acting the idiot. I moved in with a guy when i was 17 and he was 32. Back then the ages where never considered i certainly dont remember anyone mentioning the age gap to me

No you dont. In Scotland people can marry at sixteen WITHOUT parental consent. This was why many couple eloped from England to Gretna.

One of my aunts was the same. Now, though, we might well question his motivation.

Sorry, I did know that so apologies for lumping Scottish law in with the rest of UK law.

Yes I think the age should be raised to 18. To protect those coerced/ forced into it.

People will have sex regardless what age the law sets. Most people have sex before they are 16 as it is now. The law even turns a blind eye to similiar ages dating, i.e an 18yr old boy dating a 14 to 15yr old girl.

Lower expectations to marry and huge costs for a 'dream' wedding.

We don't see the point in it really. We've been together 6yrs without it. Its just a peice of paper at the end of the day.

A piece of paper that can help protect property and children. Civil Partnerships will be available soon.

True. But i think more people rent these days due to the economy being messed up and people not being able to afford to buy. And less people are having kids these days. And then it seems nobody seems to stay together for long like they used to do they. My man's grandparents were together 81yrs before they passed. Everyone seems to split these days and that i'm sure puts quite a few off of marriage and buying a house and having kids together.

It's how the government wants it. If the government promotes marriage and staying together then people marry and stay together. Russia proved that.
