Sex drive MIA - meds to blame :(

After all the mental health threads I thought I'd ask on here... Please be kind

Has anyone been on a SSRI and found it completely killed their sex drive and ability to orgasm? If you have, was it just a temporary initial side effect or did it persist? If it was an ongoing thing, what did you do?

It's a hormonal issue and the medication is the only option other than suffer but really this isn't great either.

Thank you in advance for constructive replies.

Citalopram and seroxat killed my libido dead. Sertraline and fluoxetine made no difference to it. It can take a couple of months to settle into the medication, so until then you won't know which side effects are temporary or permanent.

Venlafaxine killed mine in the beginning and that was 7 years ago, it did come back but sadly I've started the Menopause and zero sex drive

I do know of people that have been on this form of treatment and in most cases the effects ranged from depression to emotionlessness.

I know you are concerned about this and want answers- but I strongly advise you to talk to your doctor about this and discuss the options or alternatives.

They are far better trained than anyone on here and as Ive said- drugs affect everyone differently.

Yup me. Came back with a vengeance when I came off them which is easier said than done.

I hated being on them I felt hollow. Wish I could offer a solution but it didn’t come back till they left my system.

How long have you been on them? Sometimes meds need time to build up and in turn the body takes time to adapt. Was on Sertraline in my final year of university. Sex drive was low before medication and also during. It just felt numb in every sense for a long while. Libido and sensation did return eventually but not to same levels.

I have a follow up appointment for a few weeks time. I was really just wondering if others had found it was temporary or not.

It's more than a little gutting that we have such a good sex life and it's being sacrificed for who knows how long

I'm the same V and I feel awful for my hubby as he's being so lovely with it.

Not all antidepressants will cause this so maybe try another. Good luck xx

Only a week. Definitely a large degree of numbness. Notjing out of a mid range for any emotion or sensation. I don't like it. I know what I'd usually be like right now and it's better than the alternative but constant numbness seems just as bad as a week of crushing depression.

I think persevere as your body may just require time to let things settle. All the best x

I've certainly heard it happens, but I've been on Citalopram for ages and it has never affected me that way.

It's quite a common side effect, I can't take any of the SSRIs unless I'm happy to put up with lots of libido

It came back when I came off them, but not convinced it's to the sane level

Always consult your doctor first... But I tried 5htp and found it was terrific as a natural remedy personally.

Chams or Socials

Citalopram didn’t quite kill mine off but certainly reduced it. I’ve just had a total hysterectomy so waiting to see what that will do

I've been on and off sertraline for years, it used to completely stop me from orgasaming, but it only lasts a few weeks until things go back to normal

I think this is best case scenario for me

Honesty, keep taking the medication, and in a few weeks you'll be cumming again and happier!!

Good luck! X

Flueoxitine does kill your libido for about a couple of weeks, while it kicks in when you start taking it. It soon regains after that time, though, along with getting rid of the insomnia which is the other key side effect.

The problem is side effects affect people in different ways

Some it may not happen

Some for a week or 2

Some it will always be there

Other people's experience shouldn't be its as a gauge

Generally... lis of libido happens

The impact will vary by person
