This topic has split opinions at work, so just wondered what others thought....
We have just moved into new building at a work and the toilets are unisex. There aren't any urinals there, just rows of cubicles that house a toilet, wash sink and dryer. A lot of staff are refusing to use them, and are walking over to the older building to use the male/female toilets there, which in my opinion is a bit of a waste of time.
What are your thoughts on it?x |

I think that society needs to stop forcing their crap on the rest of us. I personally only want to share a bathroom with a female who has an actual vagina...
I would use the old toilets too.. |

If there's a door and nobody sat on my lap whilst I'm pissing, I'm unsure of why they have an issue other than being wet lettuces. I'm germaphobic not humanphobic so I'd be remaining and docking staff the time they are out of the building. |

It's interesting that you've assumed that the reason behind them being unisex is down to trans rights etc....in the case at work, I believe the rationale behind it is to save on space/costs versus separate rooms. |

It wouldn't bother me now, but back before I had my hysterectomy I wouldn't have wanted to have a man present while I was trying to clean myself up after flooding blood through 3 sanitary towels my knickers and my trousers.
You have to come out of the cubicle to wash. |

That's how I feel about it. The company is providing you us facilities, if we choose to walk to the old building, then the company should not have to pay for that non productive time spent. |

It is no different than being at home.
Perhaps if they had made the toilets self contained (one toilet, one sink etc) it would save embarassment of having a noisy shit with the office hotty next to you. |

So what? We have uni-sex toilets at home, not just shared with family but friends and visitors. Okay there are a whole load of cubicles in a room but as each facility is self-contained it's Pratt much the same thing. And when you lovely people go to festivals and shows all the ports lips are all lines up next to each other - no one give a shit (pun intended) about that. |

No curries during the week would be my advise
At the end of the day why bloody fix what has worked well for so long
Last thing I need is a female member of staff requesting I bollock every male member of my team for miss firing or leaving the seat up
Oh the glory hole idea was a corker |

I would be happy with that. I can clean up in private.
The sanitary bins would have to be emptied frequently though, as they can smell bad if left too long. |

Our office toilets are solid single unisex rooms with a pot and a sink in.
You are guaranteed privacy.
While in the most part in a professional capacity I'd see them ok but I'd not like to use the partitioned little cubicles. |

I don't see any issue at all with unisex or gender neutral toilets.
Everywhere you go the disabled facilities are gender neutral, separate toilets for male disabled people and female disabled people are almost unheard of. Nobody bats an eyelid at this but everyone has an issue with it being the same for non disabled folks! |

If they are completely enclosed, regularly cleaned throughout the day, have good air fresheners & seat sanitiser then I don’t think I would have an issue.
Our work toilets are cleaned about 4 times a day (but are in the middle of the building with no windows) so are probably far cleaner than most - I like it that way

Seems the logical thing is to revert to having some cubicles as male, some female. This will remove the whole seat up or down issue, and add some additional soundproofing/ insulation in the wall dividing the male/female cubicles.
Everyone would prefer not to need a crap at work, but needs must.
Unless it's a work avoidance trick.

I don’t like unisex toilets or changing rooms. Why do we actually need to do these silly things? I want my privacy, particularly at certain times of the month and I don’t want to come out of the loo and be faced with a bloke.

Wouldn't bother me if it was a self-contained cubicle that had the basin as well as the toilet. As these things become acceptable, then the separate mens/ladies will get phased out over time simply due to cost. |

My biggest issue would be accidentally hearing my work crush having a noisy shit. Bang goes the attraction!
But seriously. Most staff at the moment use the disabled toilet at work (as it's too much effort to get key cards to get through to the proper toilet) which is a cubicle with a sink and so on and no one seems to have an issue. As the other toilets are for the use of guests too, if those were changed to unisex ones then there might be an issue. |

I can go unisex if that’s the only option, no worries.

Most of the modern offices I have worked in, particularly larger organisations, have just that, OP. It's no big deal. Everyone has their own cubicle when in use.
Why are people freaking out about walking up to a door at the same time as someone else of a different gender? You're not going in together.

This is a really funny post to see.
I’ve been out tonight and thought I went to a unisex toilet, queried with my friend that it would be a bit weird if I came out the cubicle and a bloke had come in and was still stood cock in hand. She explained I’d actually just gone in the men’s, that’s not unisex, they have a cubicle as well as urinals

I don't like the thought of individual sinks in the cubicles. By my own calculations based on the motorway service stations of the Midlands, only 3.2 men out of 5 wash their hands after going to the toilet and 1.7 of them are token efforts as they pass the sinks. On top of that, less than 2 out 5 of actually use soap.
If they've got their own sink in their cubicle, they'll just turn the tap on and pretend.

Why are they pissing in the sink if there is a toilet there?
A sink the cubicle is to save space so that more cubicles can be included AND to ensure no one complains about wo/men being in 'their' space.

"I don't like the thought of individual sinks in the cubicles.
"

I misread 'pass the sinks' as 'piss the sinks'. It's late.

I see.
Pissing in the sinks in public urinals was an '80s football awayday thing. I think guys are better behaved now. |

Anyone in this thread that thinks unisex toilets has any sexual connotations whatsoever are ridiculous. You people are the problem, not your imagined perverts. People go in there to do their business, no one wants to listen to you piss and shit, get over yourselves |

Well obviously, ladies don't poo at work!! "
Ha speak for yourself! I take great delight in getting paid whilst i poo during work time! (though me being an actual lady is very much debatable) |

Silly debate. I won't' have any problem. A toilet is a toilet, if you find it embarrassing to piss or poop in a public toilet it'll be embarrassing whether same gender or unisex. I have no issues peeing but prefer to poop in my own toilet at home so won't at work unless a dire emergency - doesn't matter if it's a ladies only establishment or at friend's home with a unisex toilet. I think it's a vanity issue, women don't want to be "seen" coming out of a toilet after taking a piss/poop and don't want to be "seen" adjusting their make up by men. God knows why. |

I think more happens in 'toilets' than just a number 1 or 2.
I regularly use ours to get changed in and don't always use a cubicle for the fact that 1. They can be busy and 2. There's not much room in then to comfortably change.
Now. I'm not the shyest of bairns but I'm pretty sure in a unisex toilet there will be issues if a female colleague walked in and I'm half undressed.... |

"This topic has split opinions at work, so just wondered what others thought....
What are your thoughts on it?x"

"I don't see any issue at all with unisex or gender neutral toilets.
Everywhere you go the disabled facilities are gender neutral, separate toilets for male disabled people and female disabled people are almost unheard of. Nobody bats an eyelid at this but everyone has an issue with it being the same for non disabled folks!"
Definitely this!
Us disabled folks obviously (metaphorically speaking) dont give a shit about gender neutral toilets. We are just happy to have facilities that are suitable for us to use. |

I think it depends on how the toilet is situated. If it's just a door from the corridor or wherever that opens to the toilet, unisex not a problem. If it's a room with separate cubicles in it, but a row of sinks together - more of a problem. A place I worked at had similar to the second option. A guy was in the cubicle and two female staff were discussing a male colleague in a non-professional way at the sinks but didn't know the guy was in one of the cubicles. He reported them and there was a very long disciplinary with the women arguing they had a right to privacy etc. They were both eventually sacked. |

That situation isn't about gendered toilets. They could easily have been discussing another female colleague.

We have gender neutral toilets at my uni and everybody uses them - it's really no big deal. Staff, students, visitors, it's just standard. You get less little chats in the loos, such as talking about people you fancy etc. |

"I wouldn't care, I work outdoors and sometimes can't get to a toilet when I need one as lots of public ones are now closed permanently or closed for winter season (??) so have to take a wild wee! Not ideal but needs must. And yes, I choose where I go carefully. "
well i think you should try a sheewee ideal for your situation xx |

Ok, so a bit of an update. Turns out most people (men and women) walk to the other building to use the normal toilets there....I don't bother, I have no issues with the unisex ones.
I did walk out of the toilet today after having a wee to find a woman standing waiting to use it after me (even though the ones either side were free). As she walked past me she looked at me, smiled and said 'that sounded good'. I was in such shock I just smiled and walked out....have never seen her in the office before, but really hope I see her tomorrow hahaha.x |
