Judgey!

But why?

As I eternally seem to be asking like a three year old; why?!

Why do we judge? What is it that makes us think that we can sit in judgement of others actions and values?

We may have the most basic of knowledge about a situation, like a cheating partner and we jump to judgement of them, what is it about ourselves that means that we can sit so heavily in judgement?

"I don’t judge "

Everyone judges everyone at all times.

Some judgments are subtle and not expressed.

It's like everyone is selfish, just to varying degrees.

I totally judge people, and I'm sure people judge me, but I try to keep my judgy opinions to myself, you don't need to reveal every thought that pops into your head.

Evaluating whether people or situations are trustworthy or safe. Probably a survival mechanism in much more hand to mouth societies, evolutionary trait. Would be my guess.

Oh definitely. Or if I must, I vent it where it won't do any harm. (to people who don't know and can't possibly know the person or situation sort of thing)

That's an interesting concept but if that's the case, why is it so prevalent?

Exercising judgement and being judgemental are two different things. You can do one without the other. However I am judgemental at times but I endeavour to minimise that by considering other perspectives. I don’t succeed as often as I would like.

Our eleven year old came home from school the other day and asked what Jesus meant when he said about casting the first stone . So I told him there was a baying crowd about to stone a woman who was guilty of adultery , and Jesus stopped them by asking how many of them were perfect and only if they were free of all guilt could they throw a stone at her . And no one could so the moral was clear .

We all do stuff we shouldn’t at some point and it makes us feel better about ourselves if we have a dig at others for their misgivings . I truly believe that’s why we judge others . Otherwise why bother because we are as a species all about what’s in it for me , other than the true altruists out there .

Because it allowed us to survive. If people are "bad" we're less likely to be able to rely on them (simplistically), because they might be bad elsewhere. Not that an adulterer will also steal your food, necessarily, but s/he might. Same as obesity. We're drawn to salt sugar and fat and to stuff our faces because in prehistoric times, those fat stores allowed you to get by.

It also helps us decide how we want to act. Stupid example, but I talk fashion and makeup with one of my friends. "omg what is she wearing" isn't just, she looks stupid, it's also "and that's not something I'd wear myself".

I'm not sure if that's necessarily the case with judgement though. To me it seems more a case of imposing our moral views on others

When you call someone Sexy, or Hot, you are judging them.

When you say you like their style, their photos, you are judging them.

To find one thing cool, you need to find something else crap.

People just get asshurt when they get a negative judgement, but you never hear them say "the cheek of that fucker calling me sexy, who do they think they are judging me?"

I personally judge the shit out of everything, and am proud to do so.

Isn't it mostly people projecting their own insecurities - something we are all guilty of doing at one time or another, intentionally or not.

How will you know if someone is happy, sad or in love unless they sing about it?!

Yes, but I think it's the same sort of thing. It's wrong to cheat. It's wrong to steal. If someone lacks the moral character not to cheat, maybe they'll steal? I need my food, there isn't enough to go around, I won't rely on the cheater.

I'm not talking in depth arguments about the nitty gritty of modern morality, just broad strokes basic survival stuff. If you need to rely on Person A, who you know has done socially unacceptable things, or Person B, who you don't know that about, and your very survival depends on it, I bet most people would go for Person B. We're a social species. Our survival does depend on mutual cooperation and following certain rules.

This probably yes. To judge someone else is to take the pressure of yourself for your own wrongdoings.

I don't think that I agree with you about survival as our need for survival instincts have dimmed over hundreds of years, yet judgement is more prevalent now than ever, social media is fuelled by it.

I think your point about rules is an interesting one though. Society is based upon rules, laws and moral values, does judgement help to enforce those?

And I guess people do it because it takes effort and some empathy to understand a situation. Easier just to say 'What a total bastard' and then they don't need to actually look into why.

I suppose I'm working from the premise that these traits don't undo themselves over even hundreds of years.

And yes. Is this person worth looking into? Are their actions punishable or excusable? All of these things come with biases (is this person's behaviour suspicious or am I being racist/ classist/ etc?) but judgement is involved in the determination.
