2 bed flat in my area (no parking, possibly a communal garden) and 2nd bedroom is closet size--maybe 5" x 9"-- goes for around £400K. Needless to say, I don't own.
What are the prices like in your area? I need to move! |

"£320k-ish will get you a relatively nice 3 bed terraced with a garden round here - but it's about £5k a year to commute into London - lucky I mostly work from home then "
I think I must be further north than you. Had mine valued recently £295 and it’s a 3 bed semi. |

maybe I should add that £400 is the lowest end!
Unless you like to live next to a "water treatment center" in which case prices lower drastically.
I do like the pubs (though they close at 11 PM--12 on weekends if you're lucky).
I am just up for somewhere with a vibrant atmosphere and a bit of life.
Water (lake, sea, river) a bonus. |

You're not - am just closer to Cambridge which has an effect. You can get cheaper than that round here but £320ish seems to be the average-ish |

Really cheap in my area. You can still get a terrace house for around 50k
3 double bedrooms. 2 bathroom, kitchen and 2 reception rooms. Attic room. Utility room. For around 130k

"My lovely Edwardian town house (5 beds), 5 minutes from the beach and the train station, views of the harbour, 12 pubs within 10 minutes walk, was £215k

How long ago was that?
We have new builds near us, 4 beds, 2 bathrooms, decent kitchen, teeny gardens ~ £500! |

2 bed flat for maybe £100k. 2 bed house from £125k. 3 bed house from around £150k. I see proces down south and wonder how anyone can afford to buy at all. £400k here would get you a very nice 4 bed detached with anything up to £100k change |

"The average house price Southampton is over 350k
It's just not achievable!
"
It’s so not. It’s really sad. My daughter rents as she and her other half just can’t afford to get on the ladder. I was nearer London and had to move a lot further north for what I wanted. Luckily I bought a flat in North London when I was 22. Sold that 20 years ago and bought a lovely house for the same price I sold that for here. It’s just so hard nowadays, I couldn’t do it now. |

I'm trying to buy a house for myself as a first time buyer in Birmingham. Have had a ton on veiwings since last May and have only found a few places I liked.
One house I was close to buying I had to pull out of due to damp issues. Kind if regret having to pull out on the deal but couldn't take the risk of an underlying damp issue. That was an end terrace with 2 bedrooms, large upstairs bathroom, reception room and lounge with an extended kitchen and sizeable garden. Was going to buy for 145,000.
Had a veiwing today and got another one tomorrow which I might cancel as it's a but far out from where I want to be. At the moment I'm looking around Erdington area. It has pockets of nice quiete areas with not to expensive properties.
London is always a going to be expensive unfortunately.

If you can stretch your budget a little there are some lovely properties on Perry beeches in great Barr for 150k as I almost bought one |

OP housing prices are much more affordable up north. For example here in Nottingham you can expect to pay around 3-350k for a detached 3+ beds in a desirable area. In the more inner city areas you can pick up a 2 bed terraced house for about 100k and some flats for as little as 50k.
The biggest drawback is salaries though. Wages are generally much less so even these prices are out of reach for many who live here. |

I did look around there but it's too near my parents lol but yes do nice places.
Money isn't really an issue. I'm just being mega picky on what I buy. Was trying to get into Moseley as I lived there for 10 years but to be honest there's not a lot going round that area and I've kinda gone off it as it's going down hill. |

I need to move up North
I came back to my home town because of family illness.
Now I don't really have a lot of reason to be here.
I rent a tiny place for a large sum of money
The average price of a terrace is 300K
Depressing.
I feel sorry for the young ones - most of the people I grew up with were sensible and moved away. |

We are around £125k for a one bed flat depending on the area.
You can go as cheap as £80k but the areas are different.
For a house you are looking at anywhere between £250k & £450k I'd say on average, depending on area but can obviously go much higher for the newer builds |

Won’t get change out of 400k for anything over 3 beds in the village I live. Although an ex council house may cost a little less despite it probably being built a lot better.
I got a two bed with land and built on it. Doubled in price overnight.
Over the border into Northamptonshire the price dip quite dramatically. Was able to purchase a very reasonable buy to let and looking at another in April.
It’s crazy how much difference ten miles and differing schools can make. |

For that price round Shropshire/Welsh borders, you can get a rather decent 4 bed detached with possibly 1/3rd of an acre of land....even more round the borders/more remote areas- theres a reason i changed career instead of moving south to accomodate my previous job |

In my corner of Hertfordshire the flat downstairs was recently sold for £210k. That's 1 bedroom, small communal garden and private parking. Nearer the town centre every old office block or factory is being converted to flats to target London commuters which combined with a not that brilliant rail link to London and the fact we are a few miles from the station drives the price down on the immediate locality |

It was actually my house that I quoted at worth around 130k it needs no modernisation. It has a new kitchen. Landscaped gardens. New windows throughout. That's the prices in my village |

House prices far down south are terrifying!
Our 3 bed end terrace was 115k. Looking at 4 bed detached houses with garage for about 250k but hugely dependant on postcode for us. I could buy a 3 bed for 85k or one for 300k all within the same city and we're in a very small city!

When my parents sold their house, 7yrs ago to move to a bungalow, they got £99,950 for it.
Out of curiosity, I checked out similar houses in my area £475k
North South divide!
My own property, moved here 3yrs ago & had never been modernised - it's a very slow work in progress.
Other houses on my road, but all refitted & spruced up are currently valued at around £350k |

House prices here are ridiculous. 300k minimum will buy you something tiny. Young people have little chance of purchasing property in a village setting or near family. I live in a small village and my 4/5 bed detached would sting you £495k and my garden isn't that big.
My uncle died in Blackpool recently and my Aunt sold their 15 bed hotel on the sea front for under 200k. It doesn't make sense! |

Foreign 'investment' has fucked the housing market in many cities
Local authorities allow developers to get away with it, in fact it is actively encouraged
Many new properties lay empty for months, just accumulating value
Others are flipped 2 or 3 times before they are even built
This pushes prices up
That is before we consider locals capitalising on the need for rental properties, which again only serves to drive the market upwards
For many, affordable housing is a thing of the past |

I’d say that’s true of the south-east, but property prices are fucked elsewhere because houses seen as an investment rather than shelter. That’s not going to change any time soon because everyone has too much to lose. |

Same here - I quite like the idea of doing houses up and getting them back on the market - the number of them that are lying unoccupied and unloved with families all over the place crying out for a decent place to call home is ridiculous! |

My first home was exactly like I describe. My OH stripped it to brick. Re-plastered through, fitted new kitchen and bathroom suite. It looked like a new show home inside, you'd never have known from outside. We trebled our investment and lived there for 5 years. |

Manchester too
The City Council is actively seeking and promoting Chinese & Middle East investment in construction & development
It has now got to the stage they are even over-ruling their own criteria on % of available affordable housing
The City Centre and its immediate surroundings are most affected, but other areas are also being gentrified beyond the reach of the average local house buyer
£300 to £350k for a 2 bed terraced is not unusual in some areas
I'm sure other city councils have much the same agenda |
