For me, with someone I don't know well, any pushing of boundaries is completely inappropriate. With someone I know a little better, they might be able to play at the edge and be OK but not any further. It takes someone quite special to be able to exceed my boundaries without it being a violation: someone who knows me really well, what my boundaries are and why I have them, who I trust not to take the piss and stop at or before the moment where I say this isn't OK.

In almost all cases I'd say, pushing boundaries isn't acceptable.

Isn't the point of pushing boundaries to extend the line. The skill is to keep within permissions and not to leap accrross the boundary......

Only you shoud be pushing your own boundaries, nobody else. They can join in when you decide to do the pushing but they don't get to take the decision out of your hands.
