What I mean by this, I mean kids putting money on fruit machines in the hope to win money.
Harmless fun or the start of an addiction they might get when they're adults? |

If youre prone to the addiction youre prone to it
Dont think you’ll hear anyone sat in gamblers anonymous saying ‘If only I could turn back the clock and walk past that claw machine when I was 5 years old, little did I know the claw would really be grabbing me, forever!’ |

To be fair that claw machine is frustrating as fuck and enough to put someone off claw machines for life. |

We had a chalet in Leysdown when I was a kid, that had an amusement arcade at the end of our road. Every day we went there, or to the arcades by the sea front and had a go on the penny machines.
None of us developed a gambling problem. I hate losing.

Oh god aren't they just. The grab is just so feeble, tighten the nuts up somebody for the love of god Although the pier at Weston has one tht guarantees a prize every time. Much more relaxing to play |

"Its a worrying trend if it happens we should be reducing gambling rather than increasing it in the UK."
I agree. I've seen parents have their little toddlers "help" them. I couldn't help but think that is not a good thing to do as it could have their young ones interested in playing them when they're older. |

Penny machines including coin pushers are no problem as they're always good fun. |

I think parents should teach kids that it's wrong to gamble and give them alternative to have a go on in arcades like coin pushers, ticket games and other arcade games. |

Do I detect some personal experience OP?
And doesn't this have more to do with addictive personalities rather than learned behaviours, even though there may be links between the two?

"You have to be 18 by law to play fruit machines
True but it seems that doesn't apply to machines with only £5 jackpots.
Sorry I was going by pubs, betting shops etc where it is 18 "
Ah yes. It even applies in over 18 only sections in arcades. |

There could be a link between the two. If a kid sees their parent on a fruit machine, they'll want to have a go.
The reason for this thread was that a while back, I did a thread on if arcades are better today or back when we were kids. |

I see tempers raised in the local bookies with them roulette machines, they destroy people’s life’s if they cannot control it.
The government are reducing the maximum bet to £2 soo believe.
I think all gambling should have a small maximum bet to avoid any complications it causes to those and others |

Crane machines all over the UK are practically rigged. It's no longer about skill anymore. I reckon the claws are set to get a strong grip after a certain amount of money has been put in and then reset to a weak grip after a prize is won. |

"Never a more miserable sight than high streets with charity shops takeaways and bookmakers as far as the eye can see.
Regulate the shit out of that industry. "
It's already regulated very heavily however However bookmakers will find ways around it to stay within the law. usually be offering incentives to keep the punter betting.
Same goes for fixed odds machines. Once a punter with value starts playing many bookies try and keep them there. |

The real money is in online gaming. if you can offer a free to play game you make your money from micro transactions. Once it's free potentially it's in every childs home and on every platform.
The makers of Fortnight have done this perfectly because they know they can keep the kids playing and they can make more money off them selling digital items. They would never admit it but there soul purpose is to make money if children because they are more susceptible advertising. |

OP watching a parent gambling doesn't make children into gamblers too, in many cases it makes them very anti-gambling.
My father has always gambled on fruit machines for a long as I can remember. As children we would go to the seaside and he would spend long periods in the arcades. Our local working men's club used to have a children's disco and when we went he would spend the whole evening playing the fruit machines.
It hasn't made me a gambler it has had the opposite effect. I loathe the amusement arcades at the seaside and won't go in them. I hate the noise in those places and find them very claustrophobic.
I very rarely gamble. I have a small bet (50p each way) on the grand national and I take my mum to the local bingo hall about 4-5 times a year.

Ah I see. Thanks for your side on this. I understand now that watching a parent gamble doesn't make kids want to do the same.
In fact, I remember one time when there used to be a couple of fruit machines at where I work. There was a guy who was on one of the machines and his daughter who looked around 3 to 5 years tried to get him off it. As they walked, he looked a bit pissed off and actually smacked her up the back of the head. |

Starts earlier than that, parents buying lottery tickets, seeing the gambling adds on TV. |

Good point. I don't do the lottery as I don't see the point of it. I'm sure kids can't buy lottery tickets as it's over 18s only. |

I loved being allowed to scratch the scratch cards my parents received occasionally as part of a birthday gift.
No gambling addiction to report here. |

No they can't but they see their parents doing it, that's endorsing it, and many will play fruit machines while in school uniforms. It becomes addictive, some steal from parents or others to feed this compulsion and so the cycle commences at an early age and before you know it it's a weekly or daily even for some.
Have discouraged my kids from anything 'innocent' like that and touch wood they don't nor have any interest in doing so to my knowledge. |

I used to do it at our local working mens club.
I consider myself lucky to be fairly wise to the world anyway, but that definitely helped teach me the value of loss.
Sometimes i'd win, most of the time i'd lose, 5 minutes of fun for it to be over so quickly with nothing to show for it.
Bit like sex really |

If I ever have kids, I would teach them never to go on fruit machines if we were to go in any arcades. I would only let them have a go at machines that win tickets, crane machines and other video games available. |

The tickets are even worse - spend god knows how much so they can pick a shit plastic dinosaur that you’d get in the pound shop...
I used to play on the fruit machines in the club at my dad’s work when I was a kid - he kept the winnings |
