I got my boy from a shelter when he was six months old and he'll be twelve in June. He's like my right hand man and I love the furry little fucker more than life itself. He's not wired up right so he still thinks he's a puppy though. We've had so many good times together, don't understand it when people say oh it's just a dog....he's family. |

My last two have both been rescues
Both with deep seated issues
Both with beautiful souls
I wouldn't be without my current boy
I just wish he would trust
He's a bit like me - he likes about 5 people. The rest can feck off |

Dogs are very good at finding good people and sniffing, pardon the pun,out the bad ones.

My bosses took on a rescue dog a while ago. He was very unpredictable. He bit them and when he went for a child they knew they had to return him.
They were the fith people to try to rehome him. |

All of my dogs, past and present, have been rescued. Plus I have volunteered with dog rescues...i'm always amazed at how loving, trusting and loyal they are, even after being mistreated by vile humans. |

I have a rescue from the Salisbury Dogs Trust. I took her on after my previous rescue from there died. She was 4 and will be 13 in October. She has many issues and it's been hard work but I absolutely adore her and can't imagine life without her. Her back legs are failing though and she needs to slow down, but she's bloody headstrong. |

When I got married the first time in 1999, we went to a rescue centre in the hope of finding a cat (which is odd as I hate cats) and we went to look round the dogs anyway and there was the most beautiful little girl I’ve ever seen, she was the only one all sitting prim and proper, not barking but looking hopeful, my little princess chloe.
She came home with us that day and we had her for 14 wonderful years, it broke my heart the day we had to say goodbye.
We also rescued an old man called jack too, he was a springer spaniel and didn’t have long left but we gave him the best last year of his life. One night he tried getting on my lap and I was very tired and I pushed him away, the next day he was looking tired and wasn’t himself, we took him to the vets and he never came home, it ate me up in side for a very long time that I pushed him away that night. We had him cremated and took his ashes a year later to a spot we went on holiday to with him and scattered him there, oh how I miss having a dog.
I’ve gone a bit teary thinking about them both.

Had my boy Jerry from the Cardiff dogs home...he is my pride and joy, didn't want another dog after losing my previous one but my daughter nagged and nagged until I gave in. He subsequently helped me through some difficult mental issues and wouldn't be without him now!! |

I've had 6 dogs over my life, 4 have been rescues, 1 was from a friend who was moving abroad.
Only my current dog, was actually hand picked from a breeder.
It's also the smallest dog I've ever had had, she's weighs about 7lbs, the biggest weighed 14st
I'm still trying to figure out how a Chihuahua is more hard work than a Bull Mastiff? |

2 rescue dogs. If you give them love and affection then no different from having from a puppy. No diffetence between rescue and non rescue. Loyal and the best of friends |

Iv one, hes an older dog & was abandoned tied to the pound however I don’t judge his owners as he’s so well behaved, has commands, great with everyone. I can only think there was a great reason for his abandonment as he was clearly loved, illness/death could only be the reason I can think of. |

Surely it should have been put down at that point?

No dogs at the moment as we both work. Hubby desperately wanted a dog or two but it’s just not fair them being in alone all day every day. So we have two rescue cats. They sit, come when called get up and down on command, play fetch and one even walks happily in a lead( much to the dis-satisfaction of the local corner shop owner”NO DOGS IN SHOP!!!!!! ...it’s not a dog mate”) |

Mum took on a yorkie about 7 years ago who had been beaten by its previous owner. She's still a little skittish around strangers and loud noises(the yorkie not me ma), but otherwise she's fantastic. |

People who beat dogs make me so much more angry than people who beat people for some reason.
Dogs just seem to instinctually trust humans so it seems a violation |

I agree with you both.
If I saw a person being beaten I would intervene for sure. If I saw you beating a dog you can expect my size 9's upside your head |

I'm sorry pal but there's something ingrained in me that makes me want to defend those in trouble, an animal in particular who can't cry out in comon tongue, your beating that dog and I'm beating you |

Molly our Pug was only 14 month when we bought her, we had to get her out of there, she had already had a litter of pups. We think she was bought to be bred. We bought her got her spayed and now she's a happy well looked after pooch in a comfy home with 2 other pooches for friendship |

We had a rescue dog for eleven fabulous years.
He was a boisterous crazy Labrador when we first got him and when he died he was an old plodding beast with dodgy hips and knees but with the same spark of mischief in his eyes that we fell in love with the moment we saw him. I still carry his name tag on my key ring and miss him every day.
He was my best mate! |

I volunteer for a breed specific rescue and have fostered and homed over 59 dogs
To see a dog wag it’s tail and feel it’s nose on your hand when it finally gets over the abuse it’s had is an incredible feeling |

That's unusual as the dogs home normally try to test the dogs likes and dislikes so for it to be re homed 5 times isn't good.
It's future doesn't look promising if it went for a child
Must have had a bad upbringing |

I’ve had 6 rescue dogs and can’t miss the opportunity to promote Greyhounds.
They make fantastic pets. All they want is a comfy settee, some fuss, dinner and the opportunity to run round and round you in large circles from time to time
Gentle, graceful giants who once they get used to home comforts will soon become the love of your life. I miss all of mine more than I can describe. |

We’re contemplating adopting a rescue dog from Greece. We lost our gorgeous Lhasa a few months ago and now there’s a big gap in our lives. We weren’t going to get another dog, but we just miss the joy a dog brings.
We really don’t want to buy another pedigree, and love the idea of giving a dog that’s had a bad start in life , a loving home. |

I have one and she's so loving it's crazy. Not from any charity or dogs home because they all said unless I live at home 24 hrs a day and have a huge fortress garden I can't have one. I even wanted to home one with issues but they said it would be too hard.
I already have an amazingly calm dog who suffers from epilepsy from a pup. I've never given up on her.
It's so sad they keep the dogs in kennels whilst wanting perfection. |

Had pedigree and rescue. Would always choose rescue as been the case for last 20 years. They are the best and seem to last longer.
Never judges me but always happy to see me. |

We had a Golden Labrador for over 12 years. He was the best mate of our two kids. We all adored him.
One of the worst days of my life was when the vet told us his kidney condition had got to a point where there was not much hope for him.
I took him home for the (teenagers by then) to say goodbye to him. Then carried him into the vet for one last stroke of his wonderful loving face before I watched the life drain away from his eyes. I was heartbroken to lose him but the joy he gave our family and the love he gave and was given are memories locked in my heart for eternity.
I miss him every day and have his dog tag on my key ring to remind me of him.
All those people buying dogs for thousands of pounds should take a walk through a dog rescue centre before they commit and hopefully they will see and fall in love with one to take home for life.

"We paid a lot of money for our dog but somehow those who scavved theirs for free off some charity have become the new dog snobs.
How? Oh and rescue dogs don't come for free"
Me and an ex g/f had one from an RSPCA centre in Radcliffe on Trent back in the 80's, he was well mental and had been obviously mistreated by his previous owners, but he turned out to be a lovely dog. He was about 6 when we had him, and lived for another 8 years |

Weve had two over the years, both were great characters but both had issues. They were unreliable behaviourwise and one turned seriously bitey.
When you take on a rescue dog you're taking on an unknown quantity. |

Yeah, as you say, any dog can be trained to be either nice or nasty, it depends on their owners and how they treat them.
I have raised 3 generations of Border Collies since they were pups, the trick is to get the parent dog to each their offspring, pretty much as us humans do. Myy Border Collie used to sit and wait at the Traffic Lights next to his Mother until the road was clear (I used to live in a village and they were always off lead), education is key, but it's easier at an earlier age |

Following on from this post of ours,
We did finally adopt a 5 month old pup, which had been found fending for itself in Crete.
He’s now 11 months old and such a funny character, he’s totally loyal and loving. He’s also so handsome people ask all the time what breed he is, he’s a complete mutt of course. |

Both my dogs have been rescued. My Great Dane is somehow still with us, shes 12, and is my clumsy, clingy shadow. Shes a character and the house is going to feel very empty when shes gone.
My jack russell who we lost 2 years ago was my best friend who never left my side. He was my support when my depression was at its worst and he helped me as much as I help him. I miss him immensely.

I’ve had two. My current one is 8 and I’ve had him from a pup. Spent weeks scouring the country for rescue puppies and being beaten to it by women in posh wellies. Eventually got him after a really lengthy and demanding application process. He’s smelly and farty and dribbles when we have pizza, but my goodness I love him. |
