Who remembers going to these places when you were a kid whilst on holiday?
It was always fun playing on many arcade games and pinball machines when I was a kid. Since then, with game consoles on the rise, video games in arcades dwindled and were replaced with fruit machines.
What do you think? Are arcades better now or back when you were a kid? |

I only seem to come across arcades in seaside towns/resorts, not sure if that's just where I notice them.
Not many have video games now (or not many) more the slot machines (like TV Tipping Point type machines) and tactile games.
Never played a fruit machine in my life - just don't see the appeal - is there any actual skill involved? |

Not sure if there is any skill to playing a fruit machine but I know there is when it comes to coin pushers and games aimed at winning tickets for prizes. |

"Absolutely, I quite enjoy a coin pusher."
Yeah they are good fun.
As much as arcades today can still be fun, they were so much better back when I was a kid. Now, if you remove the crane machines, ticket games and coin pushers, the arcades today are just mini casinos for children.
I can't help but feel that some kids today that go to arcades will just end up gambling as they get older. What disgusts me is seeing parents getting their young kids to "help" them win on a fruit machine. To me, that's just encouraging gambling on kids and that does not set a good example, does it? |

"Does that happen?
As I said I've never used a fruit machine, but I thought they were usually in a separate area with "No Under 18s" signs."
They were and still are for all that give out bigger jackpots. The fruit machines outside the separate areas only have £5 jackpots. |

I wish they could bring back some classic arcade games as there are many of them you can't get on a console. Pinball machines should come back as well as they're almost extinct in arcades today.
Luckily, video game conventions like Play Expo have many classic arcade games and pinball machines available to play which is good. |

There are a few places local that might interest you. One is called n64, it's a bar in the northern quarter in Manchester with old games consoles etc setup. There is also a place in Bury that looks ace and has 3 floors of arcade stuff, they also have a sister venue in Leeds. It's called arcade club, don't know if I am allowed to post links/websites but you should be able to Google them. If you can't find them let us know.
There is also a retro computer museum being set up in the galleries in Wigan town centre. Not sure when it's opening but I will be checking it out when it does. |

I miss the old arcades they were so much fun. Old arcade machines came in so many different varieties.
I have a love for vector graphics. The old star wars game where you sat in the cockpit and had to destroy the death star was my favorite.
Dragons Lair was cool too. You can buy those games on DVD now and play them st home. |

London/Essex... ish... Romford to be exact |
Home consoles now are fantastically specced, maybe surpassing arcade equivalents in some cases such as gaming pcs. Arcades now only serve the niche markets... Dance dance revolution, 360 degree rotation cabins etc. Arcades are now old hat sadly. Good purely for nostalgia. |

I still prefer the old arcades. They had a magic to them. You'd walk in and get your mind blasted with all the flashing lights and sounds. |

When it was 20p per credit it waa fun. When it was a quid it got rather more serious. I remember easily shovelling 20 quid in a few hours at Trocadero in london. Could have bought a game almost. |

Ahh...the good ol' days of video game arcades. I was there when Street Fighter II launched and you'd have a crowd of 10+ ppl around the machine...loser to the back of the queue to make room for the next challenger Bona fide quarter muncher. Good times |

Made all its revenue solely from these machinese. Fantastic times especially bunking off a lesson to play. |

I reckon a £1 coin kept you entertained on Ridge Racer (eg) for 3-4 minutes.
I would dread to think what that equates to with the time I have invested in Battlefield (pc then ps4) if we are talking £1 for 5 minutes entertainment. |

Growing up in a seaside town the arcades were a big part of my teenage years. Like others have said the queue for Street Fighter 2, seeing sub zero rip an opponents head off their shoulders with their spine still dangling for the first time, launching the blonde woman out of the ferrari in outrun, turning the motorbikes into sheep on manx tt superbike and so much more!
Gaming was a shared experience back then rather than being holed up in your bedroom/living room these days. Not to mention the fortune it costs for games and online subscriptions. For the gaming that was done at home it was all pirate copied games on the Amiga. Couldn’t get away with any of that these days.
So glad I got to experience all of this as a child/teenager. Feels like kids these days are missing out on something.... |

Gaming is more social now than its ever been. I've got friends world wide from it and have met up with quite a few of them.
I can now chat with upto 8 mates at a time while playing and that's just ps4 |

If you have laptop, do a search for M.A.M.E
Multi Arcade Machine Emulator, small program, down load the roms(games) amd play to you hearts content.
Proper old school gaming for free, can usually download the roms as a job lot which is 100's of games.
Pheonix is still my fave, Galaga and donkey kong too. |

Wow, we only paid 30p a credit.
It wasn’t only the time spent on the games though. It was the cycling to the arcades with your mates, hanging out watching others play and maybe having a few games of pool or something. At least that was my experience. |

Totally agree and who knows it could of been 50p. I also come from a seaside town and while I appreciate my ps4 and my chair it's not the same as an arcade trying to make your money stretch to games, drinks and copping off with that girl from the year above just after you smash Operation Wolf or Time Corps or whatever it's called.
I used to have to calm down after getting into my car after being on Ridge Racerrrrr |
