Hello

I've been experiencing pain in the lower left side of my chest for the past couple of weeks.

Last month, I had a bad cough due to a cold which caused me to have pain in my upper left side of my chest. I went to the doctors about it and everything was ok with my breathing, pulse and temperature and it turned out that it was a strained chest muscle from coughing too hard.

After a few weeks, the pain moved from my upper left side of my chest to the left side under my arm until it was gone.

A week or so later, the pain is now in my lower left side and the strain does feel more painful than before as it hurts when I breathe, cough or move my arms or upper torso in certain angles.

I've tried getting a doctors appointment booked about it but I was told that they're fully booked until Friday next week.

Should I use some painkillers to ease the pain until next week and get an appointment booked?

I'd go straight to a local walk in centre. Had a few close calls health wise so I'd never chance that kind of pain.

Do you drink a lot of coffee?

How do you get to your age without being able to know if you can pop a paracetamol without crowdsourcing an answer?

Also dunno if your gp is like mine but they have an automated voice message when you call that says "if your experiencing chest pain dial 999" not the doctors

Seems like a daft question but are you taking anti inflammatory pain killers regularly?

I had a really bad cough a few years ago and was in absolute agony, I’d cracked a rib through coughing...I’d get to doctors or a&e asap.

Yeah I was just going to say as well it might be a broken rib.

I am on medication for early signs of emphysema. Due to coughing a lot when I'm ill it causes the rib cage to contract too much and ribs become fractured. I break them now and again from over streaching if they are fractured.

Is the pain localised or all over the chest, is it front or sides. Does the pain go anywhere else?

Are you having any problems breathing?

You need to go and checked out to rule out conditions like pleurisy, it doesn't sound cardiac in origin however I am not a doctor..

Go and get checked out please

Manchester (she/her)

Go to somewhere where you can be seen ASAP like a walk in centre. Don't muck about with this stuff.

I doubt that I've cracked a rib as the pain seems to be at the bottom of the ribcage. Sometimes it hurts when I breath but most of the time, it doesn't.

Ok. I had quite bad chest pains which I thought was a heart issue for a while.

Found out from talking to someone at work it was due to drinking too much coffee. I stopped drinking coffee and they went away.

Maybe you just fractured them then.

The problem is if you have pain on breathing it tends to make you breath shallower so not fully inflating your lungs as you normally would , that then cause knock on issues with chest infections. So dose up whatever is recommended on the ibruprofen.

Best wait to see your GP.

No point worrying about it too much. It might be easily cured with medication.

"Is the pain localised or all over the chest, is it front or sides. Does the pain go anywhere else?

It's at the lower left front of the chest just at the bottom of the ribcage. When I press on it, it feels like a bruise.

The pain doesn't give me breathing problems.

Yes, instead of messing about on here asking people you need to be checked over to rule out anything serious

You could go and talk to your local pharmacist, I’ve often found them really good in the past.

I think that's a fracture to be honest seeing as its when you breathe.

Good thing I've got some ibuprofen with me already.

Some branches of Boots have a walk in center. They can't prescribe anything but they may be able to advise.

I've been to a walk in centre at a boots near the hotel I'm staying at. After a nearly 2 hour wait, I was finally seen and explained the pain I've been having and I've been told that I've got an intercostal mucle strain.

Yeah. I'm sure it will. I'm glad that I went to a walk in centre earlier to have it looked at.

Still see your GP to be sure. Hopefully by that time the pain will have gone.

Liverpool

I strained my intercostal muscl3s by repeatedly leaning my ribs against my work bench. They went into spasm one night and I ended up curled up in a ball on the floor in my local pub in agony, finding breathing in painful and anyone touching my back painful. It was like a crushing pain all round my chest and through my diaphragm. Of course they called me an ambulance but about 20 minutes after they arrived the spasm stopped and I was just sore and exhausted but already on my way to hospital. I was tender around my ribs for about 2 months afterwards. It's honestly one of the most painful things I've experienced, I'd rather break a bone than do that again.

Go for a really hard strenuous run, you'll soon know if you are having a heart attack.

Alternatively you could go to a medical professional rather than asking a bunch of perverts for advice!

You know the answer is that you should be seeking advice from your GP, a pharmacist or 111.

What is with the attitude of you people. There is nothing wrong with asking for medical advice on a forum. Some of the threads on depression/mental illness have been fantastic. If you have nothing positive to contribute why not SHUT THE FUCK UP !!
