hiding from cock pics.

How important is it to do everything that your main dealer diagnostic services says? I'm finding it really hard to understand exactly what they mean, I don't do many miles and it's telling me some things are due in 6000 miles or in April, I probably won't do 6000 miles till next April.

It does say advice on the brake fluid, and I do know I won't risk that one, but the other things like the fuel filter, do I go with the 6000 miles, do I go with April, or are they just making extra work.

Before there was diagnostics I only changed something when it was due a service or when it went wrong.

What do other people do? The car is out of warranty, well maintained, and is due an MOT in a month which I feel confident it will pass.

Generally ... stick to their maintenance schedule ... they have years of experience as to why they have those periods ... however .. some things tend to only deteriorate through use ... air filter for example ...

Is it cheaper to pay £30 for a filter, or £100s for recovery and repair?

Op more info would be needed for best advice like car miles now also.

I've never trusted garages and have always done my own maintenance, but I do keep a check on all fluids, wear and tear etc.

I bought my current daily driver in May and since then have renewed all filters, changed the oil and the coolant and in a couple of months I will be renewing the brake fluid.

As for my toy (which I have now owned for 16 years), well, the Engine and Gearbox are currently out of the car for rebuild (Auto box had started playing up - I had it rebuilt by a 'professional' (Ha) garage in 2010 and they did a shit job on it - though the engine is still sound, at 22 years old and 155,000 miles, a rebuild won't hurt). While I'm at it, I'm upgrading the rear brakes (from Drums to discs) and servicing the rear axle. I upgraded the front brakes and replaced all the bushes on the front axle a couple of years ago. Also fitting a brand new Radiator, A/C Condensor and Brake Master cylinder along with a re-manufactured higher spec steering rack and I'll be replacing most of the brake lines.

I personally only change oil & filter every 8000 to 10,000 miles due to having a turbo, fuel filters are good for at least 30,000 miles, air filters the same but as air can be dirtier in some places more than others it's the environment the air filter is subjected to that should be taken into account too.

Oil doesn't go moldy, it only gets contaminated through being used in a dirty environment "engine" so if the engine is not been used too much the level of use & contamination only reflects the amount of engine time the oil is subjected to.

The only time I ever adhere to manufacturers service intervals is if there's a current warranty on the vehicle as they can use it against a claim if you have not followed the service schedule.

Basically every 6000 miles or certain date intervals are a con really.

Jesus h...just cause he has a cock dsnt mean he,s a mechanic....never had a guy do my car apart from m.o.t.... learn about you own car and do it yourself...i do all the time...

I’ve been in the motor trade for over 30 years and seen a lot of changes in vehicles and service items.

In my opinion vehicles are over serviced

Most are now serviced with long life oil and plugs

Filters are the only down fall, but having said that

15-20 thousand miles or 2 years is ok

Keep an eye out for any management lights and as a rule don’t ignore them.

Find out how to check your tyres for wear and pressure and do your under bonnet levels, oil, water and washer bottle

I had a Megane that required a major service at 75,000.

I didn't bother and at 76, 312 miles the timing belt gave up.
