Mine hasn’t been altered for 4 years now and I want to go back to my old job but have to apply again, thing is I got in there off the back of another job and knowing the people, kind of word of mouth thing so was able to do an internal application.
Now I have to apply and go through the selection process like everyone else.
How do you write a banging personal summary?

I had them when I last worked there. They’re 11 years old! |

I’m a HR consultant. I would recommend using the person specification which you will find with the job description.
The person specification contains essential and desirable criteria and is used when short listing candidates for the role. I would include aspects of this in your statement.
Hope this helps, good luck x |

Tbh I’m in almost the same boat!
My CV is fairly up to date but it’s ages since I’ve had a ‘grown up’ job! For the last few years I’ve had a minimum wage job in retail to fit in with the kids and my mum!
I’m in the process of trying to do a job description for my current job which doesn’t make it obvious that an 8 year old could easily do it!
It’s a case of dissecting the tasks/job you do into individual skills and highlighting those skills!
I - for instance - am now highly skilled at putting things into paper bags whilst chatting to people!
You also need to highlight any qualities you have which make you particularly qualified for the job you want to apply for!
It can be a good idea to have a few, slightly different, CV’s - one for each industry sector that you’re interested in!
Hope this helps |

In the business I'm in without giving too much away you are not required to have a CV but a few page online application that you can put against other jobs. It goes more on qualifications and skill set |

I have. Last time I had an up to date CV Was, it turned out, 17 years ago. I updated and took it into the job centre to be told that cv aren't written "traditionally" anymore.
Most big companies apparently have software that will read a cv in 10 seconds and just picks up on buzz words. One employment app actually "read" my cv and summarised it back to me. Their system had read that I hadn't been employed since 2001. I was asked did I have any questions - yes, was the person reading the cv blind as my cv clearly details all my employment. (Response was "I can't have read it properly" - no shit love yet you still have a job!!!!).
Tailor your cv to any job you apply for

"Also the covering letter thing. Why do you need a covering letter?"
So you can make your application specific to the job- CVs / personal statements are often more generic. |

"Also the covering letter thing. Why do you need a covering letter?"
A covering letter basically just shows that you’re bothered enough about the job to put a bit of extra effort into it!
It also gives you the opportunity to highlight any skills/experience you have that they’ve asked for in the job description! |

"Also the covering letter thing. Why do you need a covering letter?"
I'm recruiting to lots of different posts at the moment. Those that write a covering letter get my attention, because they read and understood the instructions. Those that can't be bothered go in the 'not suitable' pile.
Your covering letter needs to cover how you fit the job (see an early post on the job description and person specification, which might also be called a role profile or other names).
You're good with words so use that skill to get the job you want, without sucking anyone off.

Take a screenshot of the boxes. Press save on what you have done. Look at the screenshot and plan what you want to write. Go back when you are in a better frame of mind.
Good luck.

In my previous employment, my previous employer told me that I would never work for the company again.
I'm still paying my bills and if I may say so, I'm paying them better than I have ever paid them before.

As someone who used to conduct many many interviews, make sure you actually match what you have written on your CV, as I then find it has been a complete waste of my time, when the person turns out to not understand what you have advertised or looking for!
And never come across arrogant, you'll never get a foot in the door, some have fooled me on paper, but face to face? I have interviewed quite a few arrogant bastards and I couldn't get them out the door quick enough! |

In this job it kind of helps if you’re assertiveness and confident. I’ll know one or two if I got through to interview it’s just getting through selection. |

In my line of work a role change would mean going through an assessment centre it’s a dam tough assessment to get through too
A 15/20 min presentation on a subject you only get the day before, or sometimes on the day
A panel interview based on competence
Only then do you get through to second stage |

Draw on your previous experience there to answer the questions and identify what has changed and how you can bring those skills from your more current work.

Not upto date here either!
@OP, when I look at CV’s I like the personal summaries that are concise and to the point.
For me it’s how someone interviews that counts.
Good luck. |

It's a very fine line though, So watch what you say and look out for key words as a lot of companies now use programmes to search for them (to vet them out) I didn't actually find them helpful, but it was something we tried. Just make sure you know the job description inside out! |

If you've got 10 years or more go back to at least 10 years. If it's under that then go back that far.

Look up 'Returnships'. These are like short apprenticeships to help women back into work after bringing up children. There are things out there that help you repurpose those skills for your applications.

That is a difficult one I will admit, I have worked at my company now for 16 years under various roles, also had 11 years at another company, I would just stick at 10 as lickerty has already stated, people get bored if a cv is more than 2 pages long. |

Very often for specific jobs, yes. They should tell you what the assessment criteria will be and you can emphasise your relevant skill sets. |

If the jobs are similar you can use the the same one but have a tailored cover letters. If the jobs are different then you might want to tailor the CV to emphasise different skillsets to match the role.

One other thing...
A lot of employers will do a quick internet search to see what comes up under your name. If there is anything tricky be prepared to answer questions about this.
Also, those who embellish their CVs might get caught out this way.
I recently had someone apply for a role but they didn't realise I would be seeing the applications. They had worked for me in another company and their CV and application presented them as doing a role they never had. |

Yes. I have to dismiss if the DBS comes back with anything that may be a risk and offer letters say that the job is on condition of a clear DBS.

I've just re-written mine for the first time in around 4 years as I'm about to be made redundant after 20 years in the same place.
Scared about the whole process of looking for something outside in the real world for first time since uni.
I've played around with various formats and content so far, but not truly settled on something I like.
On point re social media I've been very aware of what I'm posting and have on more than one occasion stopped posting after thinking how it could be interpreted by someone that doesn't know my style or humour |

I keep my Cv up to date fairly regularly. As much as anything prevents major points of interest being forgotten if you have to get one done quickly if a headhunter puts forward an interesting role.
Ladies, would you really want the job if you had to suck someone random off for it? |

It doesn’t say anything about criminal records but does say candidates must pass security screening checks.
Does that mean if it returns anything at all it won’t be considered? I had a caution for common assault from 2004 when I last worked there but something has happened since and now I officially have a criminal record but there’s significant background to it and not my fault, I know everyone says that but this genuinely was such a stupid thing and because I admitted to it I now have it on my record. It’s a section 4a public order offence so nothing major major.
If it’s gonna fail on that it’s pointless me stressing and wasting my time with the application then? |

It’s a section 4a public order offence so nothing major major.
If it’s gonna fail on that it’s pointless me stressing and wasting my time with the application then?"
I'd fail you for that as I work with vunerable adults. Is it an enhanced DBS check? |

"That’s another awkward one. Enhanced DBS checks. Better to declare and explain everything isn’t it.
Yes. I have to dismiss if the DBS comes back with anything that may be a risk and offer letters say that the job is on condition of a clear DBS.
It doesn’t say anything about criminal records but does say candidates must pass security screening checks.

Possibly depends on the depth of the security checks they take, if they do indeed actually do one.
It’s worth doing your CV if not for this job but the next. |

I work with a vulnerable adult now because the lady I look after has a progressive illness but I’ve acquired this since my employment commenced, she’s fully aware of it and all the surrounding circumstances.
But yeah it would be an enhanced one because there’s a youth side as well as an adult side to this new job. What about a detailed explanation to accompany it so it’s in context? |

I do know after 10 years minor offences shouldn't show but depends on the work you've applied for.
I had an enhanced DBS check last year and arrest offence that was 12 years ago at a rally didn't come up but I was honest at the interview and got the job. |

There is legislation on employing ex-offenders and if the offense has been discharged then it shouldn't be an issue. However, it is better to state it when you get to that section of the form.
If the DBS comes back with a concern that looks like it might be a safeguarding or fraud risk then that is different. Are you likely to assault the people in your care if you get the job?

Good god no, the charge wasn’t even assault, no contact was made. Apparently you could walk round a supermarket and by the end of it someone could get you done for a public order offence. It’s any words that can be perceived as a threat. Even telling someone to shut up can be classed as threatening behaviour. It’s pathetic. |

I have and do employ people with records. I believe in rehabilitation. There are some roles I could not employ someone with a record for, though. There will be a section at the end of the application form for you to declare your record and write possibly write your explanation.
If it was more than 10 years ago it won't come up on the DBS but it is still better to be honest on the form. You can also show you have worked with and for a vulnerable adult without a problem, talk about what you have learnt and how that will help you in your work with offenders. For the Youth Offender side it would depend what the record is for.

When I worked in care, an old friend of mine had an old drink drive conviction on her crb (at the time), she declared at at time of interview and on application and was judged on her merits now, not something that happened twenty plus years ago.

I apply for most of my jobs through different apps (Adzuna. Indeed and the like). There is not often an opportunity within this to include a covering letter - and out of choice id always send one. Highlighting why I could be a good choice for the company using phrases contained within their vacancy ad. I'll get a bloody job if it kills me! |

"I have.
Tailor your cv to any job you apply for
" . The part about the buzz words is true it’s best to read the job description and type of person they are looking for as sometimes the clue to the buzz words are in their.Have more than one CV for different types of jobs. You do not have to put your date of birth on a CV now a days.A CV needs to only be 2 pages long.If you google National Career Service there is advice and a freephone number you can call for CV help or make a appointment at a local office. Also in North London most of the jobcentres have National Career Service staff on site and if they are not too busy may see people currently working who want to update their CV. |

Put a profile section at the top of your CV where you do that succinctly for those sites. I generally discount applications I receive through those sites as they don't have enough information. (I usually haven't posted the role to them and they have been mined from where I have posted the role.) |

"Tbh I’m in almost the same boat!
Hope this helps
Im trying to re purpose skills in my current mumsy basic job to fit in with something much more high brow. It will take some creative writing I know that much "
