one of my boys has an annoying habbit of correcting my grammer and i ignore it mainly as i know the correct way it is just the way i choose to say something like "pass me drink" instead of "pass my drink" if you catch my drift but the one he just corrected me on i'm fairly sure i'm correct on
we was just talking about family holidays and i said "i was trying to remember how old you was when we went there" and he said it should be "how old you were"
now i'm not convinced i'm wrong so i'm calling on you grammer police out there to help me out
which of us is right and why?
thankyou in advance for your help i'm crossing me fingers i'm right looking forward to a gloat |

it is to do with the singular and the plural... i.e .... i was, they were.
In the ordinary past tense of the verb to be, was is the first and third person singular: I was late and were is the second person singular and the plural |

but "you" was singular
( sneakily sneaking in a "you was" ) |

"but why is was wrong?"
Were is correct. It's all to do with past tense.
Also, 'was' implies that he has passed away, speaking in an absolute tense, whereas 'were' is a lot less absolute. I hope that made sense.
Ch'ya gets me, innit ! |

Sorry, forgot to give another example of "I were"
so the correct version of "if I was to tell you..."
is "if I were to tell you" as in the ABC song Poison Arrow |

Forgive the intrusion....
..Grammer is actually Grammar
'we was talking' should be we were talking because you are talking in the plural sense...
...'how old you were' is incorrect as you are talking singular (assuming you are referring to just your son and not others too) so therefore 'how old you was' is correct....irrespective of past, present or otherwise tense.
Hope that helps. |

'Were' is the past tense of 'are'... therefore you would say "you were 7" rather than "you was 7".
'Was' is the past tense of 'is' so by saying "you was 7" is like saying in the present tense.. "you is 7".

Bouncy, another one you might want to know about whilst at the dining table ...
A child might ask "can I leave the table?"
Strictly speaking you should ask "May I leave..." because CAN means physically able to and MAY menas getting the permission to leave.

Sorry I posted a link to an external site which offered help then realised it probably wouldn't be allowed anyway! D'oh!
"You were" (the past subjunctive) is appropriate in stating conditions that are contrary to fact.
"You was" (the past indicative) is appropriate in stating conditions that are not contrary to "If I was" (the past indicative) is appropriate in stating conditions that are not contrary to fact.
HTH! |

"[Removed by poster at 26/01/12 16:05:52]"
Yep, I think the simple way to look at it is past or future so...
"If I WAS the person who stole that car" indicates the possibility of being that person or doing that action in the past.
"If I WERE to steal a car" indicates the possibility of being the person performing the action in the future. |

You were right, but you was is not correct.
It is the addition of the If making it a conditional statement. |

was is the past tense of am/is, were the past tense of are
if you ever get stuck with grammar just try putting the word in a different sentence, it normally feels right or wrong.

would not go to that extreme just my personal opinion that it looks and sounds really wrong.
but, in my opinion also, it has been really nice to have a (serious?) thread on here where there have been no arguments and falling out for once |

"I was"
"You were"
It's all to do with first, second and third person singular and plural indicative.
In the ordinary past tense of the verb 'to be', 'was' is the first and third person singular: I was late, and 'were' is the second person singular and the plural: You were right. It is not acceptable in standard English to use were for the first and third person singular: I were late, and was for the second person singular and the plural: You was right.
In the past subjunctive, however, the situation is more fluid. Historically the past subjunctive of be is were for all persons, singular and plural: I wish she were here; Suppose I were rich; If only they weren't so expensive. It is quite common, though, to use was instead of were for the first and third person singular: I wish she was here; Suppose I was rich. This is perfectly acceptable in colloquial English, but in formal writing it is better to stick to were. Remember that the fixed phrase as it were cannot be changed – never as it was.

This is correct.
I wouldn't like to correct the OP, but there were a lot of grammatical errors in the text there to (though many type as they speak, coloquial dialects are perfectly acceptable in spoken English, but not in the writen format).
How old you WERE when we were on holiday. I was late, you were late, we were late......How old I was, how old you were how old we were. |

When using the simple past use:
1) 'was' for the 1st and 3rd persons singular
"I/He/She/It was younger."
2) 'were' for the other persons:
"We/You/They were younger."
Hope this helps! x |

"we was just talking about family holidays and i said "i was trying to remember how old you was when we went there" and he said it should be "how old you were".."
I'm no English master, however if you want a critique ...
The paragraph quoted..
We was isn't correct, it should be we were talking ..
Second point you should listen to your boy 'were 'is correct.. ' oh and the spelling police would say grammar not grammer.. I'm going now to check my diction.. before someone checks my profile and other posts... gulp..
