In my day to day working life I come into contact with people from all different backgrounds, ages, ethnic origins and sex. Some times I'll come into contact with some one who has let their personal hygiene slip to the point you can't even be in the room with them but except for that they seem pritty normal.
How can people not notice the they smell that bad or that they are that unclean! It's sad really. |

i am a bit ocd about personal hygiene and smells
i shower at least twice a day and even more in summer and even more if meets are arranged
wear clothes once and then they're in the wash - change undies and socks twice a day
always use body sprays, mouthwashes, always have gum on me
am forever telling one mate in particular that he needs a shower
i'd be mortified if someone said that to me, but he just shrugs it off
no need for it - it's just pure laziness and a don't care attitude in his case |

I suffer with hyperhydrosis and before I had my ops was paranoid about smelling and was always asking people I work with do I smell. Now I have had ops I dont sweat as much but have also found that it depends on what deodorant I use as to how fresh I feel. Going back to Dove as even I cant stand the smell of myself when I use Sure |

Ok let me make this clear, I am not having a go at people who have depression or saying how I was is how everyone is. I would say that I would have a better understanding of this than even other people who suffer with depression because of my carrear choice.
Secondly the people who I gave alluded to do not have depression, I would have know if they did.
So those of you getting your pants in s twist can calm down and take a deep breath, it's just a discussion |

But it's not a discussion is it?....the moment someone gives their opinion and it differs ever so slightly from yours....you tell them what they should be thinking.
Thats not a discussion....that's starting a thread and getting arsey with others for having their own _iews on your thread subject. |

Omg there is nothing worse than someone smelling of B.O or fusty or piss or A.N.Other. There are times in work where I have to hold my breathe when trying to serve customers (these are regular customers), it is a case of they cant be assed, as the whole family are the same or they have been wearing the same clothes for weeks on end. I personally want to hand them a free bar of soap and tell them to go get a bath!
As soon as they leave ive the airfreshner out and then go wash my hands.
Another smell that turns me is TCP or dettol. Its to powerful but in my experience it only seem to be the elder generation that over use this.
ok getting of soap box now |

Some people are not aware they smell and the way you handled it was the best way |

I think working in my sector for about 10 years my sense of smells has gone. I have worked with alcoholics, drug users I must admit abcesses are the worst smell. I have worked with rough sleepers. I treat them with respect I do not turm my nose up or spray air freshener. I just get on with it. |

Thats your job, and I can appreciate what you do, same as working in a caring home (tried it wasnt for me, dont have the stomach for it)or nursing ect. I'm a queasy person at the best of times. I'm not knocking the unfortunate as I never know whats in the future. I do not have a strong sence of smell so it does take something powerful for me to notice. |

yes if done politely it would be best to be honest (especially if its a young person who may not have been taught about personal hygiene)! I had a meet once and the guy turned up stinking, shame he was handsome and sexy other than that i told him why i didn't fancy playing with him, he didn't seem bothered at all never heard from him agian! oh well |

Trouble is it's a really superficial discussion isn't it?
Now if you want to have a discussion about the hygiene industry and that fuckwit of a woman who wants to sell us expensive arsewipes (42 wipes for the price of 4 bogrolls) because she wants all the country to have clean bottoms (hello? like we haven't now?) then we might be having an interesting dicussion...
Fastidiousness has become an extremely profitable fad... |

i used to feel cleanliness was largly a copied habit, i was bought up with a mother that washed daily and found myself doing the same which turned into showering daily when we got our first shower but then as our sons got older and more in control of their own hygiene regime i noticed how one was like me showering at least daily yet the other had to be told to get his butt in the shower right up to the age of 19 but when i gave up telling him (unless i noticed he was smelling then i would give in and say) he eventually started showering every other day and washing in between, the one difference between them is this son does suffer with depression, not diagnosed just as his mother i can see the signs. |

Turn left at the Singing Ringing Tree |
I remember, years ago, when a co-worker stunk of B.O and the supervisor decided to do something. The young girl was called into the office and on the desk was a can of deodorant. The supervisor pointed to it and asked 'what's that?'. Young girl replied 'I didn't steal it!'
Sometimes it's better to just get to the problem directly than try dropping hints. |

well I've got a problem like this at work. a guy in my office always smells but its like he smells of musty dirty clothes or something. he doesn't look like he showers as when his hair is longer you can see its always greasy and he smokes so maybe its a combination of musty dirty clothes and b.o plus not showing but when im near him i have to breath through my mouth as its not as bad then. now because of the environment we work in our boss has had many private conversations with him and he does improve for a short time but then goes back to how he was. plus we've tried being subtle and bought him new clothes for bday and secret Santa under the impression he likes these types of clothes (hoodies and shirts that is) but I've never not even once seen him wear any of these clothes. its mad because he has to wear designer trainers and keeps them really clean and his car is so clean its insane but for himself its like he doesn't care. i don't understand it. i know some people have issues but when you work closely you need to be considerate of those around you all the time |

And employees and managers need to be considerate on how they approach the problem too because if there is a reason, be it a medical issue or a psychological one, and it upsets the employee, then you could find yourself facing disciplinary procedures |

Same here we had one of the waitreses at work who didnt know she smelt of BO but something had to be done as we were getting complaints.
The manager went and got her some deoderant and explained to her quietly.
It was sad as she really didnt know. xx |

I switched deodorant last year to one i hadn't tried before (yeah i bought it because it smelled nice and was new lol)
and it made me stink to high heaven..just didn't react well to it at all, used it for 2 weeks went to the docs because i couldn't work out why i suddenly stank and they said because my body didn't like the new deodorant. so perhaps just the wrong deodorant? switched back to my usual brands and was fine again |
