There's no 'always': treat each person you contact as an individual and approach them based on who they are. A message that shows you've read their profile and thought before writing works wonders.

Most people do prefer to see who they're talking to though.

I never ask for face pics as I would never send one initially, after a scan of their profile and a couple of messages back n forth to see if there could be possible connection through conversation then a face pic would be good then. My ‘type’ in looks changes but not what I’m looking for mentally
