Ex-Care Assistant here, if that counts? I suspect you're on about home caring for family?

Either...

But total respect to those in caring industry... They're certainly shafted by their company's yet many would be lost without them

Professional carers are often shafted by their employers, working long hours for very low pay.

Family carers are shafted by the government. Carers allowance is a tenner a week less than you get on the dole and you have to "work" full time looking after someone to qualify.

I used to look after my dad before he passed, but had to work too as you couldn't manage on carers allowance alone.

I work in healthcare for a living.its tough being a carer ,respect to anyone who does it.

Carers allowance is a fucking joke, as has been said- its less than dole for min 35 hours (less than £2 an hour ffs ) if the caree goes into hospital or respite for a week...we dont get it. And no free prescriptions or anything...

But at least we dont show up on the 'unemployed' statistics.

I dare even say that , like me, many carers are forced into the position too...is it any wonder i feel like jumping off a fucking bridge every morning..

It's definitely not a career choice for us!

I didn't have a choice in becoming a live in carer for my mum. My twin sister lives over an hour's drive away and our other sister doesn't seem to care - she lives about 5 miles away and only visits once a week for about an hour.

I contacted social services to try and arrange some respite care back in September so I could have a holiday. They promised to call me back within 4-6 weeks to see what they could do to help - I'm still waiting for them to call . My twin sister ended up taking a week off work unpaid to come and stay with mum so I could have a break.

Whilst we are caring we have no opportunity to build up any savings or contribute to a pension because we just don't get enough money to even cover our basic needs. When we reach retirement age we will be among the poorest pensioners because we have sacrificed our future to care for our loved ones.

The look of shock on folks faces when i tell them the reality of it after they say ' how's semi-retirement'

And yeh, if, in the unlikely event we do reach retirement age (many carers don't live as long as the caree)......we're fucked!

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

Hats off to those of you caring for family and those working in the care sector.

I lost most of my savings, lost a large part of my career and lost my mind trying to care for my mother and aunt just a few days a week. We ended up putting Mum in care and got full-time live in care for my aunt. It saved us but cost a fortune.

I care for my mother ... well into her 90s now. I had to move in with her over a year ago because she wasn't coping.

I do get support from professional carers but I fill in between. I also do paid work as the cost of care is rising. It also gives me a mental break.

And then you get people on here who wonder why you can't accommodate, spend days and nights away or meet at the drop of a hat! And then you get blocked ...

I work part time too, I would have some sort of breakdown if I didn't. I always joke with people that I go to work for a rest but it's true. As much as I love my mum to bits I do need some time away from her.

I put on my profile that I'm a live in carer, right at the beginning so it can't be missed. It may help you if you did something similar.

So true about going to work for a break! I did wonder about putting it on my profile but then felt I shouldn't need to justify myself. If people can't get it when I tell them then they probably aren't the sort of people I want to meet!

It's definitely awful either way!

I worked in care for 5 years before I started working in the NHS (not much better, but at least the pay's a bit fairer!)

ST. AUSTELL, CORNWALL

I was a community carer for over 3 years. Loved my job but could no longer cope with long hours, split shifts and basically working to keep my car on the road. Towards the end it was making me ill. No time for any kind of social life either. Things need to improve for care workers as less and less people are choosing to stay or join the profession.
