FAB CRAP RUNNERS CLUB 2019 - WEEK EIGHT

Jump to: Newest in thread

By *alking Disaster OP   Woman  over a year ago

South Oxfordshire

Hello everyone and welcome to WEEK EIGHT of the FAB Crap Runners Club (2019 edition).

.

.

.

MOTTO: We run #LikeAToddlerChasingAPug

.

.

.

EXPLANATION AND ETHOS:

EVERYONE is welcome in the Fab Crap Runners' Club (the crapper the better).

From 1st January 2018, a bunch of Fabbers began improving their fitness through running. None of them were natural athletes but they did it anyway.

.

.

.

FOR COMPLETE BEGINNERS:

"Couch to 5k" (C25K) is a nine-week running programme for absolute beginners, available on various free phone apps (Mrs T used Get Running). But you can join this thread to get fit by any means including walking and cycling - all are welcome. If you're expecting to be utterly crap at it (I mean reeeeeeeeeally bad), you're in the right place. Join the thread, tell us what your aim is and we'll cheer you on each week, just for trying.

.

.

.

FOR MORE EXPERIENCED RUNNERS:

Tell us what you’re up to with your running, your training and your races. Let’s us know your highs and lows. Please cheer on the newbies and give advice if they ask.

.

.

.

FCRC SOCIAL PARKRUN

I am doing a doodle poll to find out where everyone can get to with ease before organising the next social.

https://doodle.com/poll/77nghmke7uwunrwy

Again, it's completely anonymous and you can vote for as many options as you would like.

Hopefully the regions are self-explanatory (Sorry if you think your county should be in a different region!)

I'm in the process of organising locations for parkruns. I'm thinking one a month in the different regions.

.

.

.

AND FINALLY:

Who is working towards a specific goal? Tell us your progress.

Sounds great Harry

"Back to the gym after 1.5montbs off off. 2km in 15

Mins at 4 incline

Not to bad

Weight has kept down which is good"

Good to see you back. Remember to take it easy the first couple of times!

"Injury just before Christmas took a loooong time to get to a stage where I could run again.

Building up slowly and steadily now to avoid any reoccurring issues.

Slow and steady wins the race "

Good to see you back

And good to see you taking things slowly! Too many people jump straight back at the distance and speed they were doing before they got injured - then wonder why they are injured again!

Was it a back injury by any chance?

Been marathon training since beginning of december, got to 17.5 miles but now suffering with achilles problems, shin splint problems. Took 10 days off running, started Wednesday and all good, ran saturday and now have a groin problem and a hint of shin splint.

Its really annoying

That's good discipline to take the time off, well done mate.

For the shin splints thing, try a rolling pin (I posted on this on one of the other Fab Runners forum posts). It works wonders, honestly. Ask of you can't find the details or can't be arsed to search and I'll bore everyone again

Do i strap the rolling pin to the side of my shin like a splint?

Use it as a massage device for a few minutes morning and night on the front and back of your calfs. Plus roll a tennis ball under your bare foot fit a few minutes.

If you are picking up that many injuries go and see a physio and consider some new shoes and a gait analysis.

It sounds lame but believe you can do it and you will

Even elite athletes subscribe to pmi

Also, think of the sense of achievement when you do it.

Planning on a 3km run tonight.

It’s good to be finally In a place where I can start to get fit again

Aiming for between 19.30 and 21 min mark.

Aiming to do it on a flat treadmill so should be nice and easy

You've got the right idea. C25K is perfect for beginners and you've got somewhere nice to run. Only other thing is don't under estimate the importance of a decent air of trainers

Hello and welcome.

The main do I have is "put your trainers on and get out there" and main don't is "don't give up!"

Unless you start to hurt (not muscle ache) don't worry about getting the latest kit.

You can do - i won’t listen - on a seriouse note I am keeping to the 20 to 21 mins run time and not doing any pace that stupid for me like 6 mins or 5.30 a km.

I know I need to do enough running to improve my mental health as last few weeks been not great

Be patient with yourself; DON'T overdo it; maybe don't even bother timing yourself until you get properly in to it - then you can start measuring your performance

Also don't underestimate the power of rest. If you don't rest enough you'll injure yourself and be put off.

Another thing, don't make excuses not to go out. Make a plan and stick to it

Good luck!

I started with couch to 5 k last October and could not run 100 metres. Next week I will finish the programme (delayed through injury and illness) but did my first park run last Saturday and ran all 5k in 33 minutes.

Would highly recommend the programme, have enjoyed running so much I have a 10k run booked for early April.

Planned a steady 10+ miles run commute tonight. But nothing galvanises a runner more than their watch saying there's an hours battery left at 3 mlies in and the shortest route home is still 10km away. So it turned in to a much faster and harder run than planned!

Out of interest, anybody tried canicross?

If you don't know, it's basically put a harness on your dog, strap the harness to yourself and get dragged along at 100mph (okay not quite 100mph - my dog's only good for around 30 mph).

If you have a dog and you both enjoy running, it's really good. Well recommended

I'm away for 3 weeks now so I'll get back to it when I'm back

Yup:

Be patient

You've made the first step, stick with it

Don't train injured

Don't make excuses - if you're supposed to be training, stick to it

Get yourself some decent trainers but cheap clothes otherwise (Decathlon or Sports Direct for clothes, running shops for shoes - but be careful not to be ripped off )

Rely on us lot for support!

Good luck!!!

Sadly that's a very personal choice and depends on your gait plus weight plus intentions e.g. if you plan to run of road you'll do best with trail shoes, if you need a bit of cushioning that will take you down another route.

I use Asics but they're more towards the high end so you probably wouldn't want to fork out for them to start with

The best thing is, go to a running shop and get checked out. Then look at prices online and see if the shop price matches.

Hope that helps

Or support the local shop who've just uses their knowledge and experience and given you the gait analysis and buy from them.

I buy most of my shoes online but it's a bit much to ask for a gait analysis and then leave to shop online.

I now can run a sub 23 5K

Never give up! It’s just how much you want it.

It’s all in the mind. Xx good luck to everyone who is running/walking

It’s a damn site better than sitting on the sofa.

The main thing is you are out doing something

Knocked 12 seconds of my pb at prudhoe parkrun yesterday.

All good considering I am building to a 10k in April. And will only finish couch 2 5k this week

Solid enough parkrun yesterday despite tired legs and another 7 miles afterwards.

Planned a rest day today and managed to go over on my ankle when I got distracted by a puppy and failed to notice a foot sized hole. The puppy thought the strange man lying in the floor was a great game though! Just back from A&E a probable sprain and an out patients appointment at the fracture clinic should it not be improving by Thursday. So that's well amd truly scuppered Friday's marathon (and possibly quite a bit more besides!)

"Evening Walking.

How's that hill running going?

Just think of the leg strength you're building lol

I avoid it when I can.

Hill repeats for me this eve, they are so hard!

I have to do hill repeats in two weeks. I do them every four weeks.

Then in the summer, it's every week!

Steep hills or inclines?"

Steep for me

I'm away for 3 weeks now so I'll get back to it when I'm back "

Hi new crap runner here.

Been stop start to resuming running due to ongoing calf injuries. Physio has got to the heart of the issue, and following his advice, I'm ready to start pounding the streets.

Morning folks, it's been a while!

I thoroughly lost my running mojo the last few months and after a few attempts to find it I just didn't run for a bit. However on Monday I got back out, my fitness is nowhere near what it was but as a starting point it's better than I thought.

I managed 6.2 km and I'm going to head out again tonight for the same.

It's a little demoralising when I think that only 4 months ago I ran my first marathon but mental health comes first.

I hope that everyone is doing well, I'll catch up with the thread in a bit.

Chuffed with myself. Plodded along for 3K last night.

Massive milestone considering I was worrying about not walking again last summer.

Going to invest in some better trainers this weekend. Need something that swallows up the impact. Not going to run on roads for the time being due to worry over the shins.

You might already have done this but getting gait analysis done and getting the correct running shoes for your style can work wonders.

A lot of places offer this for free nowadays so you should easily find somewhere.

I got out with my local running club last week for 4.5 miles of hill runs.

Think i’m starting to get into running-finally...

If you don't know, it's basically put a harness on your dog, strap the harness to yourself and get dragged along at 100mph (okay not quite 100mph - my dog's only good for around 30 mph).

If you have a dog and you both enjoy running, it's really good. Well recommended

I know people who do it and love it."

I do most of my running with my dog, gives you motivation to keep going, and it is great fun

Maybe go and get that seen to by a physio, it sounds a little like plantar fasciitis. If it is, it's easily solved but if left it will only get worse. I had it and I struggled to bear weight on the heel the day after running, simple stretches and a couple of exercises every day for a couple of weeks and it was sorted.

Obviously I'm not a doctor and I can't tell much from what you've written, but if it's a recurrent problem, it's better to get it looked at

It’s amazing how quickly the fitness goes but it will come back. Slow and steady wins the race

I usually end up lacking motivation if I don’t have a race booked

Really stupid question, which I think I already know the answer to, but I thought I'd ask.

I bought my (rediciuosly) expensive trainers a year ago now.

I just can't seen to do the long runs at the moment and I'm wondering if part of it is due to the cushioning going in the trainers or whether it is just down to lack of motivation? Or both??

In the back of my mind I am worried I will get my knee ache back again, so I am getting new trainers tomorrow

So could be 500 miles? The recommendation is to replace every 300-500 miles so it could be that the support has gone in them. That’s not a hard and fast rule though as I know people who have over 1,500 miles in a pair of shoes and still going strong.

Take it easy in the new shoes to break them in and see if they make a difference

So I attempted a track marathon on friday with a chipped bone in my foot. Further hindered myself with a dodgy stomach but thankfully was never more than 200 metres from a toilet. Foot held up surprisingly well but did the sensible thing and stopped at 3 hours as it was beginning to twinge and I need to think about Manchester marathon next month. Managed 16 1/2 mikes with 3 toilet stops and a mid race cup of tea! Running round in circles is surprisingly fun and nowhere near as dull as I feared, will definitely do one again.

Had a day from running parkrun yesterday but my girlfriend paced one of her club to their first sub 40 which was pretty cool

Running around 5k in 40mins battling a stitch that can almost be described as a hot poker in my side that burns all the way into my shoulder nothing seems to shift it, on the plus side I've knocked a fair bit of time off since Jan and lost just over half a stone!

Shot me I’m an old horse.

6 weeks away from a marathon, and last 2 weeks have been tough, and lost motivation too. I think we all go through those stages.

I just dropped down to doing some fun stuff and not worrying about times and hitting the plan. Feeling better again about the running."

Took your advice. Dropped the pace, found a new route, stopped wearing my watch and just got back to enjoying the run

It has been pointed out to me that my usual marathon training plan of "do a few halves and wing it on the day" may he less than optimal. So today I ran 20 miles. And I'm fucked. Completely fucked

5k on 26 minutes 01 seconds. My right leg started hurting just after setting off so took a sedate pace until it eased back to normal and was feeling good over the last k.

First time in shorts

Urgh getting really frustrated last night running 900m in every 1k, my friend turns up and is struggling to make progress, so I slow down for her, resulting in walking 500 in every 1k! My time was on track for a pb too! I feel bad dropping her but it's driving me nuts!!!

Week 2 of the training plan starts today. Week 1 was a little disjointed but I'm happy with it.

8 miles tonight after work should be fun

How did it go?

I’m out for a 10k tomorrow after a morning meeting. Anyone in Gloucester who’s about and wants a running buddy?

I do my usual 4.5k but I walked halfway, debating whether to go on to the 10k (run/walk) or try continuous till it doesn't hurt

Did my usual one near Manchester, got my quickest time for 3.5 years. This Marathon training is starting to show results.

Good luck to everyone parkrunning in the morning.

I’m off up to the lakes tonight to take part in Coniston 14 tomorrow, so parkrun is out for me this week.

I finally got back out in daylight before dinner for a 5k. Slowed right down in the middle part to look at the tree planted in memory of the landlord of the local pub and the beautiful sun setting behind it.

Sitting here with a ciggie in hand thinking I should really start somewhere. (Putting the flag out would help). A brisk walk for me might be a good start I look at the running machines in the gym but tend to say clear. Maybe I'll give them a go.

It’s all about routine.

Have no excuses. Exercise even if it’s 15mins a day and even if it’s just walking. It’s better than sitting on the sofa.

The only bad workout is the one you didn’t do!

Go get em!!

It's very hard to find time for yourself when life around you is so busy, I often run straight after work before I go home as I know once I'm home other things become a priority

The best advice I can give is to try couch to 5k, either from free app or a local running club. I did most of my c25k on the treadmill as I was too self conscience about running in public but once you can run a few miles that confidence builds up

Just saw this thread. I've been running for a bit over a year, though sometimes a bit off and on. Was on track for a 10k at the beginning of May and wrecked my calf last weekend. Gutted

Can't justify the cost of physio, so any tips welcome!
